HDMI Releases Alternate Mode for USB Type-C™ Connector Enables
HDMI Releases Alternate Mode for USB Type-C™ Connector Enables Delivery of Native HDMI® Signal to 4K/UltraHD Displays with No Adapters or Dongles September 1, 2016 - HDMI Licensing, LLC today announced that it is releasing the HDMI Alternate Mode (“Alt Mode”) developed by the HDMI Founders for the USB Type-C™ Specification. This will allow HDMI-enabled source devices to utilize a USB Type-C connector to directly connect to HDMI-enabled displays, and deliver native HDMI signals over a simple cable without the need for cumbersome protocol and connector adapters or dongles. This enables two of the most popular solutions for connectivity to come together—the small form factor, reversible, and multi-purpose USB Type-C connector being adopted by smartphones, tablets and PC products, and HDMI, which is the leading display interface with an installed base of billions of displays. Almost 290 million HDMI-enabled display devices are expected to ship in 2016, including projectors, monitors and 100 percent of flat panel TVs. HDMI Alt Mode will support the full range of HDMI 1.4b features such as: resolutions up to 4K, Audio Return Channel (ARC), 3D, HDMI Ethernet Channel, and Consumer Electronic Control (CEC). The HDMI cable will utilize the USB Type-C connector on the source side and any HDMI connector on the display side. Unlike the other Alt Mode display technologies which require various adapters or dongles to connect to HDMI displays, HDMI Alt Mode enables an easy connection via a simple USB Type-C to HDMI cable. “The USB Type-C connector is gaining traction in the mobile and PC markets,” said Rob Tobias, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC. -

The Distribution and Marketing of the Sony Playstation
Bringing the Sony Playstation to Japan: A Case of Business Fitting the Technology Zhong-Min Hu SUID: 04836359 STS 145 Case History March 16, 2003 A Decisive Day in Console History: December 3, 1994 will be remembered as a decisive day in the history of console gaming. It was on this day that Ken Kutaragi’s technological brainchild, the Sony Playstation, shown below in Figure 1, stormed Japan, selling 100,000 of its initial 300,000 units in a single day. Hundreds of Japanese lined outside game stores everywhere in Japan, gobbling up the precious machines with no attention given to their price. (Asakura 52) By 1998, the Playstation had sold more than 40 million units worldwide. (Lowood) It effectively dethroned the Nintendo kingdom, at one point prompting Nintendo’s proud patriarch, Hiroshi Yamauchi to admit, “Sony is dominating the market, and Nintendo has fallen behind in the race. When I go to Akihabara, I get the Figure 1: More than one third of the initial 300,000 Playstation units were sold in the first day alone. impression that the Nintendo 64 is going to be obliterated.” (Asakura 139) The story behind the rise of the Playstation phoenix from the ashes of a humiliating rejection at the hands of Nintendo is indeed complex. To be sure, the technology brought to life by Kutaragi was historically unprecedented in that the Playstation outperformed every console that had previously existed. And it is true that all successes begin with good technology, but the Playstation had the added advantage of a business model that was well suited to the technology. -
Zoned Storage for HDD and SSD Technologies
Zoned Storage Now Encompasses Both HDD & SSD Technologies WHITE PAPER 3 Western Digital | WHITE PAPER WHITE PAPER Zoned Storage Now Encompasses Both HDD & SSD Technologies Both HDDs and SSDs have their own on-device controllers that are used to provide low-level manipulation of the drives. The division of compute tasks performed by the host-side CPUs and the drive-side controllers has evolved over time, with the boundaries moving back and forth between them. Computational architectures have evolved, especially in data centers where — as systems started to scale — local optimizations performed by the devices began to impact global optimizations. The concept of Zoned Storage is a relatively recent development that refers to a class of storage devices — both HDDs and SSDs — that enable the host system and the storage devices to cooperate so as to achieve higher storage capacities. As its name suggests, Zoned Storage involves organizing or partitioning the drives into zones. In the case of HDDs, Zoned Storage is implemented using a technology known as shingled magnetic recording (SMR). In the case of SSDs, Zoned Storage is implemented using a technology known as Zoned Namespaces (ZNS). Data Taken As-Is Serialize Data Zoned Storage Zoned Storage 2 HDDs An HDD contains one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters coated with a magnetic material. Electromagnetic read/write heads are positioned above and below each platter. Data is stored on the platter as a series of thin concentric rings called tracks. In turn, the tracks are sub-divided into sectors. The HDD also contains a hard disk controller (HDC), which may be thought of as a small processor that is used to provide low-level control of the drive. -
