It is amply visible, too, in this Andy Warhol searching suite of recent “Winter Paintings”—abstractions of Geoffrey Farmer about eleven by eleven feet halved into two tall panels of Feng Mengbo color. Their diaphanous sheen, which appears to veil vistas or sheath rock faces, marks a shift away from Steir’s Mark Bradford signature patinas (bleaching cascades, stardusty splatter) Los Angeles and toward late Rothko’s wintry horizons. Vertical vitality James Benning makes the crucial difference here, along with the depths of The Date Farmers Steir’s elemental, mineral palette—evoking by turns rust and raw silk, ash glaze and lava flow, and nary a drop in San Francisco mercury.     ____________________________________________________________________________ Peabody Museum Names Yto Barrada as the 2013 Robert Gardner Fellow in Photography (May 31, 2013, Cambridge) The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is pleased to announce the selection of the 2013 Robert Gardner Fellow in Photography. Following an international search, the Gardner Fellowship committee awarded the Fellowship to French-Moroccan photographer Yto Barrada. Born in Paris, and raised in Morocco and France, Barrada lives and works in Tangier, Morocco. Her work has appeared internationally in exhibitions including Art Dubai, the Tate Gallery Table d'écolier de la serre, Ferme pédagogique,Tanger, (London), the Fowler Museum (Los 2011. C-Print, 150 x 150 cm. ©2011 Yto Barrada Angeles), MoMA (New York and San Francisco), Jeu de Paume (Paris) and the 2007 and 2011 Venice Biennale. According to Phillip Prodger, Peabody Essex Museum’s Curator of Photography. “Barrada has a gift for finding personal intimate moments that capture the real-life effects of global trade and exchange.” Barrada’s artistic practice includes Page 1 of 6 photographs, film, sculpture, and print publications, all of which she will create during her fellowship year to complete the project, “A Hole is to Dig.” For “A Hole is to Dig,” Barrada will engage with the complex terrain of paleontology in her native Morocco.     SIX Dear Readers, It is with great pleasure that I present the tenth annual edi- tion of SIX Magazine. This publication is the largest under- taking of the College Leadership Council for the College of Fine Arts as it features research and creative work from students in all six departments of the college: Art, Art Ed- ucation, Art History, Dance, Interior Architecture & Design, and Theatre. This publication was worked on during the COVID-19 pan- demic. Now, more than ever, I believe we need a publica- tion such as this to show the importance of art. Much of the work you will see in this year’s edition have a common theme: what it means to belong in today’s world. Though this was not the intent when we chose these pieces of work, it is ironic how these works were chosen considering the changing times we are now facing. The magazine features work by students in all stages of their journeys at the university whether they are a freshman or a PhD candidate in an effort to showcase and celebrate a wide variety of projects. By combining work from each department into one magazine, we seek to showcase the interdisciplinary nature of the arts and easily allow students within the college to share their projects with each other and the community. I sincerely hope this publication will give you insight into the incredible work students are doing in the College of Fine Arts at Florida State University. I additionally hope that this publication can show you the beauty and stability of art despite the changing times we are facing.

    Press release YTO BARRADA The Sample Book September 8 – November 1, 2016 Press conference: Wednesday, September 7, 2016, 10 a.m. Opening: Wednesday, September 7, 2016, 7 p.m. Yto Barrada’s exhibition The Sample Book presents a new body of work that builds on the artist’s recent major cycle Faux Guide and her study of fossils in Morocco. In her 2015 film essay Faux Départ (False Start), Barrada takes viewers on a journey through the parallel economy of paleontological excavation sites and “dinosaur tourism” between the Atlas mountains and the Sahara desert, once an inland sea. The “preparators” who unearth, work up—and sometimes coun- terfeit—fossil evidence demonstrate remarkable skill and knowledge as they prepare ancient pieces for sale or author beautiful hand-molded fake-fossil souvenirs. Ever since her first major series, A Life Full of Holes: The Strait Project (1998–2004), Barrada has been interested in informal and parallel economies as survival strategies. Her work went on to explore, among other subjects, such forms of “resistance” as smuggling, contraband, the subversion of public space, satire and humor, and magic. Following the trope of holes and blanks, Barrada focuses not so much on her subjects themselves as on the traces they leave. Her exhibitions often include ‘ready-made’ found objects or daily things overlooked by others, which become iconic in the complex stories she spins. The Sample Book, like Faux Guide before it, is a constellation of numerous works that function indepen- dently of each other while also being integral parts of a larger ensemble. The pieces are so heteroge- neous that the connections between them are not readily apparent, but they are tied together by a system of subtle correspondences on the level of content.
