The plans for Scotswood include not only 1,800 new homes but also new community spaces and facilities, and improvements to the infrastructure – such as the public spaces. Work has now started to get the site ready for new homes to be built. The ‘Make Your Mark: Creative Community Programme’ for Scotswood and Benwell will also be launched this summer. The programme will involve the community and will celebrate the past, enjoy the present and look to the future through local activities and projects. Bill Shepherd, Executive Member for Regeneration and Housing for Newcastle City Council, said: “The appointment of BKY is a key stage in setting up the joint venture to help deliver a new sustainable neighbourhood in the west part of the city.” Welcome home to first New maps reveal Bensham Opposite page, and Saltwell's hidden gems main image: Residents at the A new set of walking maps have been launched to work to improve housing quality and choice, are also movers at Riverside Dene Sycamores launch show the hidden gems of Bensham and Saltwell. highlighted during the walks. It shows how Gateshead Council and its partners through the Gateshead Strategic Partnership are continually looking at finding new and better ways of engaging and working with the Borough’s communities. It demonstrates the benefits of tailoring an engagement process according to the specific needs of a community – in this case the cultural requirements of Gateshead’s Orthodox Jewish community. And it shows the benefits of communities and service providers sharing information together to help services become more tailored and focussed on local priorities. Neighbourhood Management Lots of people, organisations and agencies are responsible for making sure Gateshead residents get good quality services. Different communities have different priorities and by not going down the 'one size fits all' approach to services, and listening more to what local people want, the Council and its partners aim to provide services that will mirror local needs. This flexible and inclusive approach is being taken across Gateshead with the borough being split into five areas – called Neighbourhood Management Areas. (South, West, Inner West, Central and East).

  • Green Party Objection to Core Strategy
One Core Strategy Formal Objection from the Green Parties of Newcastle & Gateshead 1. Summary Statement 2. Supporting Evidence Statement Submitted on behalf of the two organisations by: Dave Byrne, Chairperson, Gateshead Green Party ([email protected]) Sandy Irvine, Chairperson, Newcastle Green Party ([email protected]) Contact address: 45, Woodbine Road, Gosforth, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE3 1DE 1 Summary The Green Party branches of Newcastle and Gateshead submit the following joint objection to the One Core Strategy put forward for consultation by Newcastle and Gateshead councils. We believe that the Strategy is not sound since it is based on a series of false assumptions and also sets unsustainable goals. It is not effective since it fails to address the real issues of today and tomorrow. It also breaks in significant ways with a number of critical intergovernmental and national government guidelines. Indeed it is not in accord with certain policies agreed by local councils in the area. Therefore we have no alternative but to call for a fundamental rethink of the whole Strategy.i We recognise that it makes sense to formulate joint approaches between Newcastle and Gateshead. Moreover, there is a good argument for much greater co-ordination with other councils on Tyneside and the wider Tyne and Wear functional city region. The current situation is, however, one in which several local councils are now, in reality, fighting each other for new council tax payers and new businesses. Overall, however, there are too many flawed assumptions behind the Strategy, too many non-sequiturs and a quite unsound grasp of the forces that will shape tomorrow’s world.
