Not only was it full of political upheavals, but it also brought about a horrific escalation of hostilities in Syria, and an unprecedented crackdown on democratic freedoms in Turkey, Egypt, Russia and elsewhere in the world. All our Laureates, but especially our ‘class of 2016’, are deeply affected by these developments. Eleven Cumhuriyet journalists and staff remain behind bars in Turkey. Our Egyptian Laureate Mozn Hassan could not attend the award ceremony due to a travel ban. Foundation Annual Report | The Right Livelihood Award The White Helmets have lost over 150 volunteers, mainly to double strikes that target civilians and rescue workers alike. And Svetlana Gannushkina’s organisation was labelled a ‘foreign agent’ by the Russian authorities. The erosion of democracy was a recurring theme throughout the year for many of our Laureates. For the Foundation, it was the year when we experienced first-hand what shrinking space for civil society means in practice when the 30-year tradition of presenting the Right Livelihood Award in the Swedish Parliament was broken, single-handedly, by its Speaker. But every crisis is also an opportunity. If not for the Speaker’s decision, we may have never known the full extent of political and public support and appreciation that the Right Livelihood Award enjoys 27 Right Livelihood College in Sweden and beyond. And the media interest in the 30 Teaching Right Livelihood work of our Laureates was higher than ever in 2016. 2016 We remain convinced that civil society is at the heart of democracy. And, together with our Laureates, the Right Livelihood Award will continue to speak truth to power and bring solutions to the table. We would like to thank all of you — our Laureates, our partners, our supporters — for your confidence and trust. We are indeed stronger together. Hailing from Syria, Egypt, Russia and Turkey, they have witnessed some of the most turbulent events in modern times. The 2016 Right Livelihood Award ceremony took place on 25 November at the Vasa Museum, a long-term partner of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation and Scandinavia’s most- visited museum. The evening award ceremony for some 300 invited guests was staged next to the grand 17th century ship Vasa. The Right Livelihood Award Laureates share the privilege reserved for Heads of State, Nobel Laureates and other dignitaries to step aboard this historic vessel. Nnimmo Bassey is a Nigerian architect, environmental activist, author and poet. Bassey started his work on human rights issues in the 1980s as a member of the Board of Directors of Nigeria’s Civil Liberties Organisation. In 1993, he co-founded Environmental Rights Action (ERA), also known as Friends of the Earth Nigeria, an advocacy NGO that deals with environmental human rights issues in the country. Bassey was ERA’s Executive Director for two decades and is still the chair of its Management Board. Bassey’s primary campaigning focuses on oil and the enormous damage inflicted on Nigerian communities and neighbouring countries where oil is extracted (such as Angola, Cameroon, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Sudan). He works on supporting a broad movement across sub-Saharan African countries where new finds of oil are being made.     FACTSHEET Egypt – SEKEM Initiative (1977) IN BRIEF The SEKEM Initiative uses biodynamic agricultural methods to revitalize desert land and develop agricultural business in Egypt. The SEKEM mission entails a holistic approach focusing on agricultural production on farms, sustainable ecological ma- nagement, and enabling knowledge transfer, education and conscious consumption. Approximately 684 hectares of desert land have been reclaimed, of which 100% is operated by biodynamic agriculture methods; 477 farmers have been trained on bio- dynamic agriculture methods and registered under the Egyptian Biodynamic Associa- tion (EBDA). Today SEKEM is a leading social business worldwide overarching a group of companies and NGOs. The practice is transferable and since 2007, SEKEM has been working to create three new farms, with all infrastructure for sustainable development as in Belbeis.     A Call to Protect Food Systems from Genetic Extinction Technology: The Global Food and Agriculture Movement Says NO to Release of Gene Drives Gene drives are new tools that force genetically engineered traits through entire populations of insects, plants, animals and other organisms. This invasive technology represents a deliberate attempt to create a new form of genetic pollution. Gene Drives may drive species to extinction and undermine sustainable and equitable food and agriculture. Gene drives threaten natural systems. If released experimentally into the environment they may spread engineered genes uncontrollably through wild and domesticated species. This could alter ecological systems and food webs, harm biodiversity and eradicate beneficial organisms such as pollinators. Gene drives could disrupt lands, waters, food and fiber economies and harm Indigenous and peasant agroecological practices and cultures. Gene drives are being developed for use in agriculture. If applied, they may make farms even more genetically uniform and foreclose farmers’ rights, as enshrined, among others, in the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and other People Working in Rural Areas. Use of gene drives may further entrench a system of genetically-engineered industrial agriculture, extend agro-toxin use and concentrate corporate control over global food systems, undermining the food sovereignty of farmers, food workers and consumers. Gene drives hinder the realization of human rights including rights to healthy, ecologically-produced and culturally appropriate food and nutrition. We, the undersigned, call for a global moratorium on any release of engineered gene drives. This moratorium is necessary to affirm the precautionary principle, which is enshrined in international law, and to protect life on Earth as well as our food supply.

MANIfesto AGAInst GEOENGIneerING OCtoBER 2018 Hands Off Mother Earth! e, civil society organizations, popular movements, Indigenous W Peoples, peasant organizations, academics, intellectuals, writers, workers, artists and other concerned citizens from around the world, oppose geoengineering as a dangerous, unnecessary and unjust proposal to tackle climate change. Geoengineering refers to large-scale technological interventions in the Earth’s oceans, soils and atmosphere with the aim of weakening some of the symptoms of climate change. Geoengineering perpetuates the false belief that today’s unjust, ecologically- and socially-devastating industrial model of production and consumption cannot be changed and that we therefore need techno-fixes to tame its effects. However, the shifts and transformations we really need to face the climate crisis are fundamentally economic, political, social and cultural. Geoengineering says consumption cannot be changed and that we therefore need techno-fixes to tame its effects, but real solutions are economic, political and cultural. Mother Earth is our common home and its integrity must not be violated by geoengineering experimentation and deployment. We are committed to protecting Mother Earth and defending our rights, territories and peoples against anyone attempting to take control of the global thermostat or the vital natural cycles of planetary functions and ecosystems. 2 3 Healthy ecosystems and cultural and biological diversity are crucial to the well-being of all people, societies and economies. Geoengineering, whether on land, in the oceans or in the atmosphere, puts ecosystems, biodiversity and human communities at risk of potentially devastating impacts and side effects. We reject any further entrenchment of fossil fuel economies.

Monika Hauser is the founder of medica mondiale, which works to prevent and punish sexual violence against women and girls in wartime and to assist the survivors. Hauser and her colleagues have helped over 70,000 traumatised women and girls in war and post-war crisis zones in Bosnia and Hercegovina, Kosovo, DR Congo, Liberia and Afghanistan, often despite great risks to their own security. Career Monika Hauser was born in 1959 in Switzerland, and holds an Italian passport due to her family roots in South Tyrol. She completed her doctorate in medicine in Innsbruck and Bologna in 1984, obtained her German medical licence in 1988 and completed her gynaecological specialisation in 1998. She came to work with victims of sexual violence after being exposed as a young doctor in South Tyrol and Germany to women who had experienced rape and other forms of sexual violence. Bosnia - Building up Medica Zenica At the end of 1992, Hauser was shocked by the media reports about the tragedy of the Bosnian women, and the instrumentalisation of the survivors in the media, which often reduced the women to mere "rape victims". She assembled a highly motivated team of 20 Bosnian experts, collected the funding needed, brought the complete material for the clinics to Central Bosnia through the frontlines and built up Medica Zenica, a women's therapy centre, in the middle of war-torn Bosnia.

    THE RIGHT LIVELIHOOD AWARD Press Release Stockholm, 22 September 2016 Embargo until 10:00 Stockholm time (08:00 UTC/GMT) on 22 September 2016 Egypt’s Mozn Hassan and Nazra for Feminist Studies Announced as a 2016 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Mozn Hassan, a leading Egyptian feminist, human rights defender and the founder of Nazra for Feminist Studies, has been announced as a Laureate of the 2016 Right Livelihood Award. Hassan and Nazra receive the award ‘for asserting the equality and rights of women in circumstances where they are subject to ongoing violence, abuse and discrimination’. The announcement was made today in Stockholm by Ole von Uexkull, Executive Director, and Marianne Andersson, Board Member of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation. The decision was made by an international Jury that had considered 125 nominations from 50 countries. “Hassan’s work has placed her in the crosshairs of various groups during an incredibly turbulent period in Egypt, culminating in the present crackdown on civil society and NGOs”, Ole von Uexkull stated. “Her work in, amongst many other things, successfully lobbying the Egyptian government to enshrine increased rights for women in the 2014 Constitution encapsulates the values of the Right Livelihood Award, and we hope that this will highlight that the fight for equal rights for women in Egypt – and across the world – is far from over”. Hassan and Nazra worked tirelessly during and after the Egyptian revolution of 2011, ensuring that survivors of sexual assaults during public protests received medical, psychological and legal support. As well as successfully advocating for women’s rights in the current Constitution, Hassan’s work contributed to modification in Egypt’s Penal Code: expanding the definition of sexual crimes to include sexual harassment.
