COMBS Lexington, Kentucky A paper read before The Filson Club, June 6, 1960 Twelve years after the founding of Harrod's Station, the first per- manent English settlement in Kentucky, on the night of December 27, 1786, a small group of distinguished gentlemen met at the Dan- ville, Kentucky home of Samuel McDowell. He and Harry Innes, John Brown, Thomas Todd, Robert Craddock, Chris. Greenup, and John Belli "Resolved, that the persons now present do form them- selves into a society to be hereafter distinguished and known by the style and title of 'The Political Club,' to be governed by such laws and regulations as shall be hereafter agreed on" and to be "insti- tuted for the purpose of acquiring political knowledge."1 Such was the modest beginning of an unusually intriguing and ex- traordinary society! A political club composed of 25 to 30 men, meeting once a week to debate specified subjects. What is so unusual or fascinating about that? Schools, colleges, life in the great wide world, are full of myriad just such groups--investment clubs, debating clubs, clubs with a politi- cal connotation--we, today, are constantly hearing about them, going to them, reading about them. What sets this particular club apart, makes it worth investigating, and gives it an aura all its own? First of all, there is the work this club did. The importance of The Political Club of Danville lay in the training of its members for the role they played in the creation of the state of Kentucky. -

Antoni Górny Appalling! Terrifying! Wonderful! Blaxploitation and the Cinematic Image of the South Abstract: The so-called blaxploitation genre – a brand of 1970s film-making designed to engage young Black urban viewers – has become synonymous with channeling the political energy of Black Power into larger-than-life Black characters beating “the [White] Man” in real-life urban settings. In spite of their urban focus, however, blaxploitation films repeatedly referenced an idea of the South whose origins lie in antebellum abolitionist propaganda. Developed across the history of American film, this idea became entangled in the post-war era with the Civil Rights struggle by way of the “race problem” film, which identified the South as “racist country,” the privileged site of “racial” injustice as social pathology.1 Recently revived in the widely acclaimed works of Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) and Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), the two modes of depicting the South put forth in blaxploitation and the “race problem” film continue to hold sway to this day. Yet, while the latter remains indelibly linked, even in this revised perspective, to the abolitionist vision of emancipation as the result of a struggle between idealized, plaintive Blacks and pathological, racist Whites, blaxploitation’s troping of the South as the fulfillment of grotesque White “racial” fantasies offers a more powerful and transformative means of addressing America’s “race problem.” Keywords: blaxploitation, American film, race and racism, slavery, abolitionism The year 2013 was a momentous one for “racial” imagery in Hollywood films. An examination of the records of the county for some in- formation, awakened curiosity in regard to its early settle- ment, and gradually led to a more extensive search. The fruits of this labor, it was thought, might be worthy of notice, and productive of pleasure, on a wider scale. There is a strong desire in most men to know who were their forefathers, whence they came, where they lived, and how they were occupied during their earthly sojourn. This desire is natural, apart from the requirements of business, or the promptings of vanity. The same inquisitiveness is felt in regard to places. Who first entered the farms that checker the surrounding landscape, cut down the forests that once covered it, and built the habitations scattered over its bosom? With the young, who are absorbed in the engagements of the present and the hopes of the future, this feeling may not act with much energy ; but as they advance in life, their thoughts turn back with growing persistency to the past, and they begin to start questions which perhaps there is no means of answering. -

In typically acerbic fashion, he retrospectively judged his experiences in Los Angeles to be “unreal and inconclusive, almost as though they hadn't happened at all.” Coward described his festive jaunt through Hollywood’s social merry-go-round as like careering “through the side-shows of some gigantic pleasure park at breakneck speed” accompanied by “blue-ridged cardboard mountains, painted skies [and] elaborate grottoes peopled with several familiar figures.”1 3 Coward’s first visit persuaded him that California was not the place to settle and he for one only ever made fleeting visits to the movie colony, but the description he offered, and the delicious dismissal of Hollywood’s “fabricated” community, became common currency if one examines other British accounts of life on the west coast at this time. -

Cr rDOCATIOS LfBBlil N FEBRUARY 1940, the railroad yards at St. Louis were filled with the special trains and extra Pullmans handling the convention travel of the American Associa- tion of School Administrators. Special trains and extra Pullmans for civilians were early war casualties. In February 1941, two hundred and eighty-two firms and organi- zations participated in the convention exhibit of the American Association of School Administrators in the Atlantic City Audi- torium. Today, the armed forces are occupying that entire audito- rium, one of the largest in the world. In February 1942, the official count showed that 12,174 persons registered at the San Francisco convention. The housing bureau assigned 4837 hotel sleeping rooms. *Now every night in San Francisco, long lines of people stand in hotel lobbies anxiously seeking a place to sleep. -
The Human Use of Human Beings
THE HUMAN USE OF HUl\IAN BEINGS This is one of the fundamental documents of our time, a period characterized by the concepts of 'information' and 'communica tions'. Norbert Wiener, a child prodigy and a great mathematician, coined the term 'cybernetics' to characterize a very general science of 'control and communication in the animal and machine'. It brought together concepts from engineering, the study of the nervous system and statistical mechanics (e.g. entropy). From these he developed concepts that have become pervasive through science (especially biology and computing) and common parlance: 'in formation', 'message', 'feedback' and 'control'. He wrote, 'the thought of every age is reflected in its technique ... If the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries are the age of clocks, and the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries constitute the age of steam engines, the present time is the age of communication and control.' In this volume Norbert Wiener spells out his theories for the general reader and reflects on the social issues raised by the dramatically increasing role of science and technology in the new age - the age in which we are now deeply and problematically embroiled. His cautionary remarks are as relevant now as they were when the book first appeared in the 1950s. Norbert Wiener (1894-1964), Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1919 onwards, wrote numerous books on mathematics and engineering. Having de veloped methods useful to the military during World War Two, he later refused to do such work during the Cold War, while proposing non-military models of cybernetics. -
