The team are regularly involved in incidents that do not result in a full team call out.

Over the last few weeks, our Team Leaders have been called to assist with two missing persons searches. Thankfully on both occasions the individuals were located before the full team were called to assist.

We also recently supported a neighbouring team in assisting with a further ongoing search for a missing person. This assistance, over two separate days, involved CVSRT providing Bolton Mountain Rescue Team (BMRT) dedicated Search dog teams (each team includes a search dog, handler and navigator), to work along side BMRT members to search specific areas identified.

All of the above instances highlight the dedication of all Mountain Rescue and Wales Teams across the country as we support our emergency MRSDE Search dog Meg services and each other when called upon. with CVSRT Pete Farnell

8 Trainee Search Dog CVSRT have a new trainee, and perhaps the cutest one yet! Please welcome “Spot” who joins his handler, Simon Adams, on the team as he begins the long journey to become an operational search dog. Spot is a six month old Collie, joining a team full of experienced trainee and operational search dogs who will help to look after and guide him through his training.

The support of the team will be invaluable as all Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England (MRSDE) dogs undergo an intense training and assessment programme for up to 3 years before they are accredited for operational work. This training and assessment continues throughout their operational life to ensure their skills remain at the highest level.

The dogs love the work they do and a highlight of our team training is acting as a dogsbody - hiding in the hills to be found by a smiling and energetic dog. Just watch out for those puppy teeth, they’re like needles!

The resulting footage is a wonderful insight into how the dogs and handlers work whilst searching for a missing person.

CVSRT and our MRSDE Search dog handlers would like to thank all the students involved who took the time to capture the search dogs in action and present the results in an engaging film. You can see more of their work on Facebook and Instagram by searching: @animalsoncall

10 Consider A Monthly Gift By Matthew Greaves, Treasurer, Assistant Leader & MPSRO Drone Lead There’s no denying that charities are having tough times and CVSRT is no exception with a significant decrease in donations and all fundraising events cancelled for the foreseeable future. During a “normal” year, it costs the team approx c.£45,000pa to remain operational. During Covid-19, running costs have increased due to the need to purchase additional PPE for our volunteers to remain safe whilst attending incidents. Like all Mountain Rescue teams, we receive no direct Government funding. All our expenses are met by generous donations from the community and local businesses. We totally appreciate that times are hard during the pandemic, but if you can support the team, please be assured that every penny goes directly to keeping a roof over our heads and our vehicles rolling to the next callout. Thank you.

To maximise your donation: We use these online giving platforms which enable us to claim Gift Aid (which usually adds 20% to your donation amount at no extra cost to you).

#BearingUp CVSRT member Paul Taylor, rode his unicycle along the canal towpath system, across the country from Runcorn to Goole, all in order to raise much needed funds to provide equipment for CVSRT’s specialist Swift Water Rescue Technicians.

Paul passed through and CVSRT’s HQ on 14th September and shared some words on his challenge.

“CVSRT needs to equip the Swift Water and Flood Rescue Team with essential Flood Rescue items. Earlier in 2020, Calder Valley experienced more fl oods again, and have experienced several severe fl ood events in recent years.”

“Bearing Up! plans to ride, on one wheel on the canal towpath system across the country from Runcorn to Goole, passing over Summit in order to raise much needed funds for fl ood vulnerable communities along this route.”

“I am making the journey over multiple days from July 2020… and WHEEL eventually get there...!”

Incidents 1976 • On 2nd February, a male (49) failed to return to work. Several days elapsed before notifying the police. A ‘missing person enquiry’ produced nothing. He was last seen on 20th January when he mentioned walking the Pennine Way from Edale to Cowling. On 21st February CVSRT undertook a path search from Sandbed (A646) to the M62 and also recruited Rossendale to work south from Cowling whilst Holme Valley worked north from Wessenden Head. Calder Base, transmitting via a radio aerial atop a 32ft mast, provided excellent coverage south to the HV area and north to Wadsworth Moor for Rossendale. Nothing found. On Sunday 22nd two walkers crossing the rough trackless moor of Black Hameldon came across a sleeping bag containing a body later identified as the missing walker.

• August – A successful search for a patient from Stansfield View Mental Hospital after he had spent the night in a nearby derelict building.

• September – A successful search for two males benighted on Soyland Moor after a shooting expedition. Calder Base transmitting via a radio aerial atop a 32ft mast The long hot summer A drought of incidents followed that in February to be matched by a prolonged drought during Britain’s driest summer in over 200 years. Dennis Howell, Minister for Sport [based on being a Football Association referee from 1956 until 1966] also became Minister for Drought. Amid an endless water shortage and a proliferation of standpipes came his Day of Glory – 28th August – when Mytholmroyd Gala was deluged as we attempted to raise funds with our Wheel of Fortune.

In July he had opened the new West Yorkshire Information Centre in Hebden Bridge [now Valli Opticians] complemented by our exhibition about Mountain Rescue at which was available our 20,000-print leaflet ‘How to stop yourself dying on the moors’. At that event was the Director of Recreation and Arts for West Yorkshire Council. He had addressed our March meeting of its pioneering policy decision to offer some financial support to Mountain and Cave Rescue organisations in WY. This support – ‘to take care of equipment maintenance and obsolescence’ – would be in recognition of the services to the community beyond actual rescue. In keeping with that philosophy was our contribution to the opening of the Information Centre. After a grant of £100 was negotiated he enquired ‘Is there anything else that we can do for you?’ With interest he noted our response ‘Can we have the semi-derelict building at the rear for our HQ?’ He would deliberate and report back. To be continued…!
