Italian Angeloni’s Serves Up A Warm Welcome By Felicia Lowenstein Niven

Alan Angeloni slides his chair over so he can comfortably lean back against the stone wall in Angeloni’s main dining room, the same wall that his father and brother painstakingly built with their own hands 32 years ago. At age 57, Alan is the patriarch of his family’s business here in Atlantic City, a role that was thrust upon him years ago and one that he

Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates also was a regular. And when he came, all of his fans followed. We’d be packed.” But Alan tried not to fuss too much over the celebrity guests. “People ask me why I don’t have pictures of the celebrities on the wall, but I think they liked coming here because they could relax and be themselves,” he said. “They were out to have a good meal, not to pose for pictures or sign autographs. Maybe that’s why so many of them came back.” For non-celebrities too, Angeloni’s II is a relaxing place to be. The family atmosphere extends to the front bar, where Alan said women have told him that they feel comfortable coming by themselves. “They know that no one is going to bother them; we make sure of it.” The bar is decorated with Yankee memorabilia, a tough sell in this town. “I’m a big Yankees fan,” admitted Alan, “but of course most of my friends and customers are Phillies fans. So we have a fun rivalry over it.” And while Angeloni’s II stocks a full bar, the restaurant has become known for its wine selection. Remember when Alan was just learning the ropes as a bartender back in Hamilton Township? Now he’s being lauded by Wine Spectator, which has given Angeloni’s II six awards. “We’ve come a long way since our first wine list which probably had 28 wines,” he said. “Now we have over 400 on the list, and probably 150 that aren’t on it. We stock between 9,000 and 10,000 bottles at any given time; at one point, we had as many as 12,000. We try to keep it affordable, so they are at all price points, anywhere from $25 to $750.” There is no sommelier at Angeloni’s II, but also no need for one. Alan is ready to help you select the perfect bottle and so is bar manager Tom Guida, who is one of several employees with Angeloni’s II since the mid-1980s. “I’ve been very blessed with my employees,” said Alan. “More than a few have been with me since the 1990s.
