(Gregory Peck as Tom Rath, Th e Man in the Gray Flannel Suit , 1956) Th e cinema in its literal sense has been both a landmark of the suburban-built environment and staple source of popular culture in the post-war era: with the Regals, Gaumonts, UCGs and ABCs off ering relatively cheap escapism from everyday mundanity and routine. Th e cinema has served the function of a venue for suburban courtship for couples and entertainment for fully formed family units with the power to move audiences to the edge of their seats in suspense or to tears – be that laughter or of sadness. While the VHS and advent of domestic video recorders was seen to threaten the very existence of the cinema, many suburban areas have seen the old high street picture palaces replaced/displaced/ succeeded by out-of-town complexes where suburbia has sometimes been the subject on the screen as well as the setting of the multiplex they are screened in.

The focus of this project is to exploit the window to the soul that is opened when one person reaches out their hand to the next. The thesis will consist of a series of short stories arranged to display stories with more emotionally intense climaxes closer to the end of the collection. Similar to Dante descending into the depths of hell to finally meet the devil himself, the arrangement should not reduce the emotional intensity of its stories until the end of the collection. The intended effect is to entice the reader into reading further by creating anticipation for the emotional experience to come. Stories should range from three to fifteen pages. They will written in a conventional style. This entails the opening and inciting incident coming first, followed by the rising action, crisis point, climax, and falling action respectively. The theme of the thesis is best intentions gone awry. Each story should include some focus on acts of kindness that fail horribly.

  • Latvian Neorealism in the Films of Laila Pakalniņa
BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2016 / VOLUME 4 / ARTICLE Article Alternative Networks of Globalisation: Latvian Neorealism in the Films of Laila Pakalniņa KLĀRA BRŪVERIS, University of New South Wales, Australia; email: [email protected] 38 DOI: 10.1515/bsmr-2017-0003 BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2016 / VOLUME 4 / ARTICLE ABSTRACT This paper examines the development of neorealist tendencies in the oeuvre of contemporary Latvian filmmaker Laila Pakalnina. Her work is positioned within the global dissemination of cinematic neorealism, and its local manifestations, which, it is argued, develop in specific national contexts in reaction to dramatic societal and political changes. Pakalniņa’s films are examined as a documentation of the change from a communist satellite state to an independent democratic, capitalist country. Heavily influenced by the Riga School of Poetic Documentary, a movement in Latvian cinema that adhered to the conventions of poetic documentary filmmaking, the article analyses how her films replicate and further develop the stylistic and aesthetic devices of the Italian neorealists and the succeeding cinematic new waves. In doing so the argument is put forth that Pakalnina has developed neorealism Latvian style. • Documentary America: Exploring Popular Culture
Review Essay Documentary America: Exploring Popular Culture Sam Girgus DOCUMENTING OURSELVES: Film, Video, and Culture. By Sharon R. Sherman. Lexington: University Press of Kentucky. 1998. HOLLYWOOD'S INDIAN: The Portrayal of the Native American in Film. Edited by Peter C. Rollins and John E. O'Connor. Lexington: University Press of Kentucky. 1998. DISASTER AND MEMORY: Celebrity Culture and the Crisis of Hollywood Cinema. By Wheeler Winston Dixon. New York: Columbia University Press. 1999. Documentary today influences and structures the way we think about and envision current events and history. The proliferation of documentary, of course, stems in part from its importance to television as specials, docudramas, and public broadcasting endeavors such as Ken Burns' The Civil War (1989). Also, docu mentary films such as Michael Moore's Roger andMe (1989) achieve critical and commercial success. Yet, while documentary for information and entertainment grows in popularity and authority, its relation to film as an art and to culture studies remains generally misunderstood and neglected. Thus, documentary requires further study to explain its place in our culture. 0026-3079/99/4003-147$2.00/0 American Studies, 40:3 (Fall 1999): 147-155 147 148 Sam Girgus Besides the cost efficiency of documentary as compared to commercial films, the power and popularity of documentary also derive from the conventional belief in its special relationship to reality. In her important new book, Document ing Ourselves: Film, Video, and Culture, Sharon R. Sherman uses a familiar but descriptive label to identify this idea of documentary realism as a "'slice of life'" (10). For many, documentary provides a visual and audial piece of actual experience, rendering that experience with an immediacy to reality that obviates the mediation of written texts and artistic forms.

  • Journey to the Academy Awards: an Investigation of Oscar-Shortlisted and Nominated Documentaries (2014-2016) PRELIMINARY KEY
Journey to the Academy Awards: An Investigation of Oscar-Shortlisted and Nominated Documentaries (2014-2016) PRELIMINARY KEY FINDINGS By Caty Borum Chattoo, Co-Director, Center for Media & Social Impact American University School of Communication | Washington, D.C. February 2016 OVERVIEW For a documentary filmmaker, being recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category is often the pinnacle moment in a career. Beyond the celebratory achievement, the acknowledgment can open up doors for funding and opportunities for next films and career opportunities. The formal recognition happens in three phases: It begins in December with the Academy’s announcement of a shortlist—15 films that advance to a formal nomination for the Academy’s Best Documentary Feature Award. Then, in mid-January, the final list of five official nominations is announced. Finally, at the end of February each year, the one winner is announced at the Academy Awards ceremony. Beyond a film’s narrative and technical prowess, the marketing campaigns that help a documentary make it to the shortlist and then the final nomination list are increasingly expensive and insular, from advertisements in entertainment trade outlets to lavish events to build buzz among Academy members and industry influencers. What does it take for a documentary film and its director and producer to make it to the top—the Oscars shortlist, the nomination and the win? Which film directors are recognized—in terms of race and gender?

  • Bamcinématek Presents Indie 80S, a Comprehensive, 60+ Film Series Highlighting the Decade Between 70S New Hollywood and the 90S Indie Boom, Jul 17—Aug 27
BAMcinématek presents Indie 80s, a comprehensive, 60+ film series highlighting the decade between 70s New Hollywood and the 90s indie boom, Jul 17—Aug 27 Co-presented by Cinema Conservancy The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/June 11, 2015—From Friday, July 17 through Thursday, August 27, BAMcinématek and Cinema Conservancy present Indie 80s, a sweeping survey of nearly 70 films from the rough-and-tumble early days of modern American independent cinema. An aesthetic and political rebuke to the greed-is-good culture of bloated blockbusters and the trumped-up monoculture of Reagan-era America, Indie 80s showcases acclaimed works like Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise (1984—Jul 18), David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986—Aug 8), and Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies, and videotape (1989—Aug 14) alongside many lesser- known but equally accomplished works that struggled to find proper distribution in the era before studio classics divisions. Filmmakers including Ross McElwee, William Lustig, Rob Nilsson, and more will appear in person to discuss their work. Like the returning expatriate’s odyssey in Robert Kramer’s four-hour road movie Route One/USA (1989—Aug 16), a sampling of 80s indie cinema comprises an expansive journey through the less-traveled byways of America. From the wintry Twin Cities of the improvised, hilariously profane road trip Patti Rocks (1988—Aug 25) to the psychopath’s stark Chicago hunting grounds in John McNaughton’s Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986—Jul 29) to the muggy Keys of Florida in filmmaker Victor Nuñez’s eco-thriller A Flash of Green (1984—Aug 12), regional filmmakers’ cameras canvassed an America largely invisible to Hollywood.
