Aalto University School of Science Master’s Programme in Computer, Communications and Information Sciences Santeri Korhonen Energy Efficiency of Modern Datacenter Master’s Thesis Espoo, May 26, 2018 Supervisor: Martti Mäntylä, Professor Thesis advisors: Matti Tella, MS.c. (Tech.) & Kari Hiekkanen, D. Sc (Tech.) AALTO UNIVERSITY School of Science ABSTRACT OF THE Master’s Programme in Computer, Communications and Information Sciences MASTER’S THESIS Author: Santeri Korhonen Title of the thesis: Energy Efficiency of Modern Datacenter Number of pages: 7+61 Date: 26.5.2018 Major: Software and Service Engineering (Enterprise Systems) Supervisor: Martti Mäntylä, Professor Thesis advisors: Matti Tella, MS.c. (Tech.) & Kari Hiekkanen, D. Sc (Tech.) Digitalization is here and everyday more and more data are being stored or transferred over the internet. That means that more datacenters are needed and with their growing number the question is if this development is sustainable for energy efficiency. That is why this thesis studies what are the essential factors contributing to the energy efficiency, so the datacenter owners can maximize their energy efficiency and keep the outlook for future sustainable. Through studying 3 datacenters here in Finland and holding interviews this thesis has gathered the following essential factors that contribute to the energy efficiency: business model, datacenter size, reuse of waste heat energy, location, renewability, transparency and open innovation. Concentrating on these factors and making sure that they align
