LOCK Department of Humanities and Social Studies in Medicine, McGill University The Mindful Body: A Prolegomenon to Future Work in Medical Anthropology Conceptions of the body are central not only to substantive work in med- ical anthropology, but also to the philosophical underpinnings of the en- tire discipline of anthropology, where Western assumptions about the mind and body, the individual and socieo, affect both theoretical view- points and research paradigms. These same conceptions also injluence ways in which health care is planned and delivered in Western societies. In this article we advocate the deconstruction of received concepts about the body and begin this process by examining three perspectives from which the body may be viewed: (1) as a phenomenally experienced indi- vidual body-self; (2) as a social body, a natural symbol for thinking about relationships among nature, sociev, and culture; and (3)as a body politic, an artifact of social and political control. After discussing ways in which anthropologists, other social scientists, and people from various cultures have conceptualized the body, we propose the study of emotions as an area of inquiry that holds promise for providing a new approach to the subject. The body is the first and most natural tool of man-Marcel Maw(19791 19501) espite its title this article does not pretend to offer a comprehensive review of the anthropology of the body, which has its antecedents in physical, Dpsychological, and symbolic anthropology, as well as in ethnoscience, phenomenology, and semiotics.' Rather, it should be seen as an attempt to inte- grate aspects of anthropological discourse on the body into current work in med- ical anthropology. -

Prerequisites: Some social science background Course Description: This course provides an advanced introduction to anthropological theory and methods designed for food and nutrition science and policy graduate students. Section 1 covers anthropology's four-field modes of inquiry, cross-cutting theoretical approaches and thematic interest groups, their respective institutions and intellectual concerns. Section 2 demonstrates applications of these concepts and methods to cutting-edge food and nutrition issues. Assignments and activities incorporate background readings, related discussions, and short writing assignments, plus an anthropological literature review on a focused food and nutrition project, relevant to their particular interests. The course overall encourages critical thinking and scientific assessment of anthropology's evidence base, analytical tools, logic, and meaning-making, in the context of contributions to multi-disciplinary research and policy teams. Weekly 3-hour sessions feature an introductory overview lecture, student-facilitated discussion of readings, and professor-moderated debate or exercise illustrating that week's themes. Throughout the term, participants keep a written reading log (critical response diary), to be handed in week 3 and 6. In lieu of a mid-term exam, there are two 2-page graded written essay assignments, due weeks 4 and 8. The term-long food-and nutrition proposal- writing project will explore anthropological literature on a focused food and nutrition question, with an outline due week 9, and a short literature review and annotated bibliography due week 12. -

Because of government and health authority interest in determining issues that might influence the health and well-being of white northern women, and hence their families and a future white labour force, in 1924 the Institute of Tropical Medicine conducted a comprehensive Sociological Survey of White Women in selected northern towns. Designed to address and resolve concerns of government and medical authorities with anxieties about sanitation, hygiene and eugenic wellbeing, the Survey used domestic science criteria to measure the health knowledge of its subjects: in so doing, it gathered detailed information about their lives. Guided by the Survey assessment categories, together with local and overseas literature on racial ideas, the thesis examines salient social and scientific concerns about white women in Queensland‟s tropical north and in white-dominated societies elsewhere and considers them against the oral reminiscences of women who recalled their lives in the North for the North Queensland Oral History Project. -

Spring 2021 – Course Descriptions (as of October 29, 2020) Undergraduate: Anthro 101 Biology, Culture & the Human Experience This course provides an introduction to Biocultural Anthropology, the integration of biology and culture in the study of humankind. There are many facets of the human experience that are at the same time biological, social, and imbued with cultural meaning. Examples include race and racism, sex and gender, reproduction and birth, health and medicine, global nutrition, obesity, stress and mental health, violence, and trauma, and others. The course will introduce students to perspectives from social, cultural and biological anthropology and then bring these perspectives into play to investigate and illuminate these examples of the human experience. One of the key goals in the class is to better understand how individuals' lived experience becomes embodied as human biology. Finley Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Division of Hospital Medicine, Department of Medicine, UT Health Science Center, San Antonio and Investigator, South Texas Veterans Health Care System Many of medical anthropology’s leading lights are currently lamenting the undervalued place of ethnographic work in public health and medicine. Vincanne Adams argues that in the field of global health, demands for randomized, controlled studies have become an “empirical tyranny” (Adams 2010:48). And Joao Biehl and Adriana Petryna assert that “ethnographic evidence consistently dies within the dominant conceptual paradigms of global health” (Biehl and Petryna 2013:16). This argument seems incomplete to us. Based on our experience publishing and collaborating with health professionals in two very different arenas—global polio eradication, and veteran-oriented health services research—we have come to believe that anthropologists now have an unprecedented opportunity to contribute to the creation of clinical and public health structures more deeply informed by core anthropological concerns. Anthropological theory has a powerful grasp of the connection between broad- scale social structures and intimate lived realities, and its methods are perhaps unequaled in capturing the nuances of context. But making the most of anthropology’s particular strengths will require overcoming a series of challenges, particularly in how we as anthropologists communicate with other health professionals. In this commentary, we first discuss our observations on anthropology’s unique value in contemporary health research and practice and then offer a few suggestions for how to make the most of our contribution. -

Geographic variability in food habits and diet across the globe are the result of unique forces of biology, environment, history, and culture in the development of nutritional patterns. In addition, food and the rules regarding its consumption are among the strongest symbolic elements of culture. Therefore, the integration of both biology and culture is foremost in nutritional anthropological studies. We examine a broad range of literature from anthropological theory, biological anthropology, archaeology, historical anthropology, and modern field studies to understand the evolution of the human diet, human diet through ancient and modern times, the collection of nutritional data, and modern challenges to the study of culture and nutrition. The course is structured as a seminar in which weekly participation and discussion are critical. I will present a brief overview of the weeks topic followed by student presentations and discussion.
