Roger Bannister (Roger Bart) is Joanna’s flamboyant gay neighbor ________________________________________________________________________ Scene 1: Joanna In The Hospital 1. nervous collapse: also called a mental or nervous breakdown; used to describe a serious and temporary condition where someone becomes so depressed because of stress that they are unable to function in society or perform daily activities; often happens when the situation gets too physically or emotionally hard for the person 2. quit the network: stopped working for the TV channel company 3. get away and start over, and get it right, our marriage: go to a new place and start a new life to finally become a happy family and married couple Scene 2: The Family Arrives In Stepford 4. kick back: relax and enjoy whatever is happening at the time 5. Stepford Realty: a company specialized in selling and buying land and buildings 6. so nice to meet you, in person: Claire and Walter already knew each other because they had spoken to each other on the phone and they finally meet face to face 7. the cutest little bug’s ear: you are very cute 8. sassy: has two meanings and Claire is using both to describe Kimberly; means someone is full of energy and confident—as a smart child should be—but also means one can be rude and disrespectful—as Kimberly is when she answers “bug’s don’t have ears” straight to Claire’s face 9. electroshock?: electroconvulsive therapy—formerly known as electroshock therapy—is a standard psychiatric treatment where electricity is passed through the patient’s brain to treat severe depression; here, Claire is asking if the reason why Joanna seems so passive is because she received this treatment 10. hello little energizer: a joke about Joanna having possibly received an electroshock therapy and being full of energy, which is funny as she is absolutely unresponsive; an energizer is a device that provides electrical current, and also a brand of batteries ©2015~2016 English Buffet Scene 3: In The New House 11. the top of the line here at Stepford Estates: this is the biggest house our company sells, the one that offers the highest level of quality; an estate is a large piece of land with a big house on it—the company only sells very big and expensive houses 12. all secure: all doors, windows or any ways to get into the house are now locked or safe from any danger 13. the system also monitors all the commodes: the central house computer can also control and display information about all the toilets in the house 14. test your urine for blood sugar, protein and body fat: the system can tell you how much sugar is in your blood, and the ratios of fat and protein in your body compared to your weight—for example, 10 to 20% of fat in your body might be OK, but 30% isn’t 15. will you be commuting?: will you be going to work from here by car every day? 16. rover: a small or medium-sized robot that can move around without any human help Scene 4: In The Car With Claire 17. it was founded by George Washington and Martha just loved it: supposedly, the first President of the United States created this city or neighborhood, and his wife, Martha, also loved it 18. our wonderful guys can get together and stay out of our hair: the Stepford Men’s Association was made so that our great husbands can keep busy and entertained together, while they leave us alone 19. am I right?: a phrase used when someone says something so obvious to them, they expect the other person to automatically agree; really means “don’t you think so too?” ©2015~2016 English Buffet .
