The ISO 639-3 RA acknowledges the confusion concerning the relationship between the French creole used in Martinique and the French creole used in adjacent island nations of the Lesser Antilles, as described by the Ethnologue , 16 th ed. SAM SELVON TALKING A Conversation with Kenneth Ramchand Samuel Selvon K.R. Samuel Selvon, you are the first writer-in-residence that we have had at St. Augustine and this is an important breakthrough for us, but I'm sure that many people will wonder why you are here for one month only, and why you have come in June* when our students are preoccupied with examinations. s.s. I had hoped to come for the full student term, from October to December 1982, but I'm working on a new book which I have started and I have found that some research that I'd hoped to put off till a later period has to be done right now. I can't really move with the book until the research is done. K.R. Are you doing a non-fiction work? s.s. No, but in a way it is a departure for me. I hope to do a work of fiction, but it will be based loosely — very loosely — on historical material. Although it will be in the main a fiction and invention, and will related more to human and social relationships than to events, I would like to adhere to the history of the period — roughly the 1920's and 1930's — as closely as possible. At the same time if I find that the fiction and the creativity are working to my satisfaction, I might forsake historical authenticity. In other words, if I feel the need to shift an historical event or circumstance out by a few years I might very well do so. -

Revista África e Africanidades - Ano 3 - n. 11, novembro, 2010 - ISSN 1983-2354 www.africaeafricanidades.com The arts of resistance in the poetry of Linton Kwesi Johnson1 Jair Luiz França Junior2 Resumo: Este artigo analisa insubordinação e resistência manifestas na poesia pós-colonial contemporânea como forma de subverter os discursos dominantes no ocidente. Mais especificamente, a análise centra-se em estratégias textuais de resistência no trabalho do poeta britânico-jamaicano Linton Kwesi Johnson (também conhecido como LKJ). A qualidade sincretista na obra desse poeta relaciona-se com diáspora, hibridismo e crioulização como formas de re[escre]ver discursos hegemônicos com bases (neo)coloniais. Críticas pós- coloniais, em geral, irão enquadrar esta análise de estratégias de dominação e resistência, mas algumas discussões a partir do domínio de história, sociologia e estudos culturais também poderão entrar no debate. Neste sentido, há uma grande variedade de teorias e argumentos que lidam com as contradições e incongruências na questão das relações de poder interligada à dominação e resistência. Para uma visão geral do debate, este estudo compõe uma tarefa tríplice. Primeiramente, proponho-me a fazer um breve resumo autobiográfico do poeta e as preocupações sócio-políticas em sua obra. Em seguida, apresento algumas leituras críticas de seus poemas a fim de embasar teorias que lidam com estratégias de dominação e resistência no âmbito da literatura. Por fim, investigo como estratégias de resistência diaspórica e hibridismo cultural empregados na poesia de Linton Kwesi Johnson podem contribuir para o distanciamento das limitações de dicotomias e também subverter o poder hegemônico. Além disso, este debate está preocupado com a crescente importância de estudos acadêmicos voltado às literaturas pós-coloniais. -

THE ARTS OF RESISTANCE IN THE POETRY OF LINTON KWESI JOHNSON AS ARTES DA RESISTÊNCIA NA POESIA DE LINTON KWESI JOHNSON JLFrança Junior* Resumo Este artigo analisa insubordinação e resistência manifestas na poesia pós-colonial contemporânea como forma de subverter os discursos dominantes no ocidente. Mais especificamente, a análise centra-se em estratégias textuais de resistência no trabalho do poeta britânico-jamaicano Linton Kwesi Johnson. A qualidade sincretista em sua obra relaciona-se com diáspora, hibridismo e crioulização como formas de re[escre]ver discursos hegemônicos com bases (neo)coloniais. Críticas pós-coloniais, em geral, irão enquadrar esta análise. Este estudo está organizado em três debates fundamentais: um breve relato biográfico do autor e a contextualização sociopolítica em que sua obra se insere, alguns exames críticos da poesia de LKJ e um estudo das estratégias de resistência diaspórica e hibridismo cultural empregados na sua poesia. Este artigo visa, portanto, a fazer uma análise literária de poemas pós-coloniais como técnicas estratégicas de descentramento da retórica ocidental dominante, a qual tenta naturalizar desigualdades e injustiças em ambos os contextos local e global. Palavras-chave: Poesia Contemporânea, Crítica Pós-colonial, Diáspora, Crioulização, Resistência. Abstract This paper analyses insubordination and resistance manifested in contemporary postcolonial poetry as ways of subverting dominant Western discourses. More specifically, I focus my analysis on textual strategies of resistance in the works of the British-Jamaican poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. The syncretistic quality in his oeuvre is related to diaspora, hybridity and creolisation as forms of writ[h]ing against (neo)colonially-based hegemonic discourses. Thus postcolonial critiques at large will frame this analysis. -

There had been nothing particularly propitious in his experience up to then to indicate that within a relatively short period of time he would become an internationally recognized writer and performer. Now, at thirty-nine years of age, he has published four books of poetry, has recorded seven collections of his poems set to music, and has appeared in public readings and performances of his work in at least twenty-one countries outside of England. He has also pursued a parallel career as a political activist and journalist. Johnson was born in Chapelton in the parish of Clarendon on the island of Jamaica in August 1952. His parents had moved down from the mountains to try for a financially better life in the town. They moved to Kingston when Johnson was about seven years old, leaving him with his grandmother at Sandy River, at the foot of the Bull Head Mountains. He was moved from Chapelton All-Age School to Staceyville All-Age, near Sandy River. His mother soon left Kingston for England, and in 1963, at the age of eleven, Linton emigrated to join her on Acre Lane in Brixton, South London.1 The images of black and white Britain immediately impressed young Johnson. -

His writing in the Moses trilogy is very representative because of his preoccupation with issues of identity and culture. The Lonely Londoners, published in 1956, and Moses Ascending, published in 1975, are two of them. These two books telling Creole immigrants’ story have been recognized as a great masterpiece in Caribbean literature, which have a far-reaching influence on postcolonial literature. This thesis attempts to employ Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity to illustrate the Creoles’ struggle against colonization and the construction of political hybridity. The thesis consists of three parts. Part One is Introduction, which presents a short introduction to the author Samuel Selvon, his two works, the theoretical framework. Part Two depicts the process of the Creoles’ struggle against colonization in political civilization. In the aspect of politics, the Creoles experience the process from unawareness of politics to pursuing their political dream. They attempt to construct their own political system on the basis of the British mode. Part Three is Conclusion. Based on the above analyses, the thesis draws the conclusion that different cultures can influence each other. -

His Moses trilogy is very famous because of his preoccupation with issues of identity and culture. His two representative works The Lonely Londoners and Moses Ascending giving a vivid description of Creole immigrants’ life in London, have a far-reaching influence on postcolonial literature. The thesis attempts to employ Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity to elaborate the formation of cultural identity. The thesis consists of three parts. Part One is Introduction, which gives a brief introduction to the author, his two works, the theoretical framework. Part Two presents the dilemma in which the Creoles have to face on cultural identity. In the aspect of cultural identity, the Creoles experience the process from identical crisis to the construction of hybrid identity. Part Three is Conclusion. Based on the above analyses, the thesis draws the conclusion that different cultures can influence each other. Close Readings Lars Eckstein 13 Sam Selvon, The Lonely Londoners (1956) Abstract: This essay reads Sam Selvon’s novel The Lonely Londoners (1956) as a milestone in the decolonisation of British fiction. After an introduction to Selvon and the core composition of the novel, it discusses the ways in which the narrative takes on issues of race and racism, how it in the tradition of the Trinidadian carnival confronts audiences with sexual profanation and black masculine swagger, and not least how the novel, especially through its elaborate use of creole Englishes, reimagines London as a West Indian metropolis. The essay then turns more systematically to the ways in which Selvon translates Western literary models and their isolated subject positions into collective modes of narrative performance taken from Caribbean orature and the calypsonian tradition. The Lonely Londoners breathes entirely new life into the ossified conventions of the English novel, and imbues it with unforeseen aesthetic, ethical, political and epistemological possibilities. The Republic of Panama forms the narrowest part of the isthmus and is located between Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east. The Caribbean Sea borders the northern coast of Panama, and the Pacific Ocean borders the southern coast. Panama City is the nation’s capital and its largest city with an urban population of 880,691 in 2010, with over 1.5 million in the metropolitan area. The city is located at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal , and is the political and administrative center of the country, as well as a hub for banking and commerce. The country has an area of 30,193 square miles (75,417 sq km) and a population of 3,661,868 (2013 census) distributed among 10 provinces (see map below). -
