Chief synoptic conditions as on 6 May, 2021 ♦ A Western Disturbance lies as a trough in mid and upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along longitude 64°E to the north of latitude 26°N . ♦ A trough in westerlies runs roughly along longitude 90°E to the north of latitude 18°N between 3.1 km & 7.6 km above mean sea level. ♦ A cyclonic circulation lies over North Interior Karnataka & neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level. ♦ A trough runs from above cyclonic circulation over North Interior Karnataka & neighbourhood to South Kerala coast at 0.9 km above mean sea level. ♦ A cyclonic circulation lies over Northern parts of Central Madhya Pradesh and extends upto 1.5 km above mean sea level. ♦ AN east-west trough runs the above cyclonic circulation over Northern parts of Central Madhya Pradesh to Tripura across Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal at 0.9 km above mean sea level. ♦ A trough/wind discontinuity runs from the cyclonic circulation over northern parts of Central Madhya Pradesh to Marathawada at 0.9 km above mean sea level. ♦ A cyclonic circulation lies over North Gujarat coast at 3.1 km above mean sea level. ♦ A cyclonic circulation lies over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Maldives area at 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Large scale features as on 6 May, 2021 ➢ Currently, moderate La Niña conditions are prevailing over equatorial Pacific and Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) are below normal over central & eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. The latest Monsoon Mission Climate Forecasting System (MMCFS) forecast indicates warming of SSTs over Nino 3.4 region during the coming season and there is a possibility of transition of La Niña conditions to ENSO neutral conditions during the forthcoming season. However, model skill during this period is supposed to be limited because of the spring barrier. ➢ At present, neutral Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions are observed over Indian Ocean and the latest MMCFS forecast indicates neutral IOD conditions are likely to continue up

3 | P a g e

to May, June & July (MJJ) months and negative IOD conditions likely to develop thereafter. ➢ The Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) index lies currently in phase 1 with amplitude more than 1. It will move to phase 2 from tomorrow and continue in same phase during next two days. It will propagate eastwards and move to phase 4 across phase 3 in the later part of week 1 with amplitude becoming less than 1. Thereafter it will move across phases 5 and 6 during week 2. Thus, the phase and amplitude of MJO will support enhancement of convective activity over the north Indian Ocean (including Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea) only during week 1. ➢ Forecast for next two week Weather systems & associated Precipitation during Week 1 (06 to 12 May, 2021) and Week 2 (13 to 19 May, 2021)

Rainfall for week 1: (06 to 12 May, 2021) • An east-west trough lies over east & northeast India at lower levels and is likely to persist during next 6-7 days. A north-south trough lies over northeast India at middle & upper tropospheric levels. It is also likely to persist during the week. In addition, strong southerly/southwesterly winds are likely to prevail over the region during most days of the week. • Under the influence of above systems, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thundershower with isolated heavy falls very likely over northeastern states & West Bengal & Sikkim during the week. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls also likely over Assam & Meghalaya during 2nd half of the week. Light/moderate isolated to scattered rainfall along with thunderstorm & lightening is also likely over rest parts of east India during the week. • Under the influence of a Western Disturbances and its interaction with easterly winds at lower levels over plains of northwest India, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/thundershower very likely over Western Himalayan Region during the week and isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorms is likely over plains of northwest India during next 4-5 days. Its intensity & distribution is very likely to increase over

4 | P a g e

plains of northwest India thereafter due to confluence of winds and moisture feed from Arabian Sea at lower levels. • Due to trough/wind discontinuity over south Peninsular India, light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rain/thunder is very likely over Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep and Coastal & South Interior Karnataka; and isolated rain/thundershower over rest parts of south Peninsular India during the week. However, its intensity is likely to increase towards end of the week. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Kerala & Mahe and Coastal & South Interior Karnataka on today, the 6 and 12 May, 2021. • Light rainfall/thundershower is very likely over the rest parts of the country during the week (Annexure IV).

Rainfall for week 2: (13 to 19 May, 2021) • Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls is very likely to continue to occur over northeast & adjoining east India during most days of the week. Rainfall activity is very likely to be above normal above areas except Arunachal Pradesh. • Due to trough/wind discontinuity over southwest Peninsular India, light to moderate thundershower is very likely to continue over most parts of south Peninsular India including Lakshadweep during most days of the week. Hence, rainfall activity is likely to be above normal over the above region. • Light to moderate fairly widespread rainfall activity is likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands during many days of the week. • A WD likely to affect northwest India during 12-14 May and a wind confluence likely in the lower levels, over northwest and adjoining central India, during the same period, which is likely to cause scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Western Himalayan region and isolated to scattered rainfall over plains of northwestern and adjoining central India during the period. During the week2, rainfall likely to be below normal over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh; and near normal over remaining parts of the country (Annexure V).

Temperature for week 1: (06 to 12 May, 2021)

5 | P a g e

• Yesterday’s Maximum Temperature Departures as on 05-05-2021: Maximum temperatures were above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places over Andaman & • Nicobar Island, Gujarat State, Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep; at isolated places over Assam &Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, West Bengal & Sikkim. These were below normal or near normal over remaining parts of the country. • Due to likely thunderstorm activity over most parts of the country, maximum temperature are very likely to be below normal over most parts of the country except parts of Western Himalayan Region, East Coast and Saurashtra & Kutch, where these are likely to near normal or slightly above normal. • Hence no heat wave is very likely over any part of the country during next one week. Temperature for week 2: (13 to 19 May, 2021) • Maximum temperatures are likely to increase as compare to week 1. However, it is likely to be below normal or near normal over most parts of the country outside parts of Western Himalayan Region, East Coast, south Chhattisgarh and Saurashtra & Kutch, where these are likely to above normal (Annexure VI). • Hence, there is low to moderate probability of heat wave at isolated pockets over Odisha, Saurashtra & Kutch and coastal Areas of Andhra Pradesh during week 2.

Impact of heat wave and action suggested • Heat wave could be moderate health concern for vulnerable people e.g. infants, elderly, people with chronic diseases over the heat wave areas specifically over coastal areas of Odisha, Saurashtra & Kutch and Andhra Pradesh due to availability of high humidity over these regions. Hence public of these regions should avoid heat exposure, wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, cotton clothes and cover the head by use of cloth, hat or umbrella etc. Cyclogenesis: The phase and amplitude of MJO will support enhancement of convective activity over the north Indian Ocean (including Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea) only during week 1.

6 | P a g e

Most of the numerical models including IMD GFS, GEFS, ECMWF, NEPS, NCUM & NEPS are not indicating any cyclogenesis during the forecast period. CGEPS (MME) indicates low probability of cyclogenesis (10-20%) over south Bay of Bengal during the forecast period. The Genesis Potential Parameter (GPP) based on IMD GFS is not indicating any potential zone for cyclogenesis over the north Indian Ocean during the forecast period. However, it is seen that the northern hemispheric near equatorial trough is likely to become convectively active over the south Arabian Sea in the beginning of week 2. Under it’s influence, a 'Low pressure area' is likely to form over central parts of south Arabian Sea and there is a 'low' probability of its intensification and Cyclogenesis over the same region during later part of week 2. Considering all the above, it may be concluded that there is low probability of cyclogenesis over south Arabian Sea during later part of week 2. For further details pls visit http://www.rsmcnewdelhi.imd.gov.in/uploads/archive/24/24_b8438a_EROC_06052 021.pdf Next weekly update will be issued on next Thursday i.e. 13 May, 2021

BRIEF NOTE ON LIVE STORAGE STATUS OF 130 RESERVOIRS IN THE COUNTRY (WITH REFERENCE TO RESERVOIR STORAGE BULLETIN OF 06.05.2021)

1. ALL INDIA STATUS Central Water Commission is monitoring live storage status of 130 reservoirs of the country on weekly basis and is issuing weekly bulletin on every Thursday. Out of these reservoirs, 44 reservoirs have hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW. The total live storage capacity of these 130 reservoirs is 174.233 BCM which is about 67.58% of the live storage capacity of 257.812 BCM which is estimated to have been created in the country. As per reservoir storage bulletin dated 06.05.2021, live storage available in these reservoirs is 56.042 BCM, which is 32% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. However, last year the live storage available in these reservoirs for the corresponding period was 69.405 BCM and the average of last 10 years live storage was 46.908 BCM. Thus, the live storage available in 130 reservoirs as per 06.05.2021 Bulletin is 81% of the live storage of corresponding period of last year and 119 % of storage of average of last ten years.

As per Table-01, the overall storage position is less than the corresponding period of last year in the country as a whole but is better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

2. REGION WISE STORAGE STATUS: a) NORTHERN REGION The northern region includes States of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. There are 8 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 19.17 BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 06.05.2021, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 3.99 BCM which is 21% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 45% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 33% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

b) EASTERN REGION The Eastern region includes States of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura and Nagaland. There are 20 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 19.96 BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 06.05.2021, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 5.36 BCM which is 27% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 44% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 36% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

c) WESTERN REGION The Western region includes States of Gujarat and Maharashtra. There are 42 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 35.24 BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 06.05.2021, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 13.86 BCM which is 39% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 42% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 26% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is less than the storage of last year but is better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

1 d) CENTRAL REGION The Central region includes States of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. There are 23 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 45.27 BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 06.05.2021, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 15.42 BCM which is 34% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 47% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 31% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is less than the storage of last year but is better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period. e) SOUTHERN REGION The Southern region includes States of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, AP&TG (2 combined projects in both states), Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. There are 37 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 54.60 BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated 06.05.2021, the total live storage available in these reservoirs is 17.41 BCM which is 32% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 30% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 18% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is better than the storage of corresponding period of last year and also is better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.
