2018 Hall of Fame Bios Jim Bunning 2018 Hall of Fame Bios Jim Bunning - 2018 West High (1956) Jim was born in Waterloo August 16, 1938 and lived mostly on Vermont Street through college attending Irving Grade School, West Junior High and West Waterloo High School. Wrestling for Coach Bob Siddens, Jim was a 2X State Qualifier. Qualifying at 138 his junior year and capping off an undefeated senior season with a State Title at 145. He also played football for West at fullback and outside linebacker his senior year his team was undefeated and ranked number one in the state. He graduated as valedictorian in the Class of 1956 - the first class to graduate from the new West High School. Jim attended Iowa State University majoring in mechanical engineering and worked for IBM after graduation and his career took him to Chicago working for various companies and eventually became a corporate Vice President of Information Systems. He and his wife Barbara have three sons and have lived in Sturgeon Bay in Door County Wisconsin since Jim’s retirement in 1998. All three sons also wrestled; one placing at the Illinois State tournament and wrestling and playing football in college. Jim and his family have been active in hunting and fishing and have taken annual hunting and fishing trips - including trips to Saskatchewan, South Dakota and Illinois. Jim and Barbara’s family has grown to 15. Mark Fox - 2018 West High (1970) Mark Fox came out for wrestling in 1967 for the first time his sophomore year at West High after Coach Bob Siddens asked him to join the team one day in the hall. Mark quickly picked up the sport in a very tough practice room and made the Varsity team his junior year placing 4th at 138 lbs in the last State Tournament held at McElroy auditorium as the Wahawks won the State Championship. He then was a State Champion his senior year at 137 lbs in the first State Tournament held at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines with the Wahawks finishing in 2nd place. Mark had numerous offers from schools across the nation and selected to wrestle for Chuck Patten at the University of Northern Iowa. Mark was a 3-year letter winner for the Panthers including earning All-American status with a 4th place finish in the Division II nationals in 1972 helping the Panthers to a 2nd place finish in the team race. Additionally, during the run up to the 1972 Olympics, he was among a group of wrestlers including Ken Snyder and Jim Miller who helped train Dan Gable and the Peterson brothers (Ben and John) at the West Gym as they prepared for the Munich Olympics. All three went on to medal at the Olympic games. Mark continued to lead the family shoe store business, Fox Shoes, through the stores’ 100th year mark in business. Mark currently lives in Des Moines with his wife Carla and their daughter Marcy lives in Las Vegas. Jack Smith - 2018 East High (1954) Jack graduated from East High School in 1954 where he was a three-sport letter winner in baseball, football and wrestling. In 1953, he was the 154-pound state champion on East’s first state championship wrestling team. He was Dave Natvig’s first state champion wrestler along with Ken Salyer. The following year he started on East’s 1954 state championship wrestling team. Jack played football and wrestled at the University of Northern Iowa. After college, he took a teaching/coaching position at Sigourney High School in Iowa. He started the wrestling program and led the team for 25 years, posting a dual meet record of 215-34-2. Nine of his teams went undefeated. Five teams placed in the top three. He coached 84 state qualifiers, 37 place winners and five state champions. Jack was awarded the 1980 Class AA Coach of the Year, was a 1990 inductee into the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame and was inducted into the U.S. Wrestling Hall of Fame - Iowa Chapter. He lives in Sigourney, Iowa. Jim Duschen - 2018 East High (1962) Jim graduated from East High School in 1962 where he was a three-sport letter winner in baseball, football and wrestling. His senior year he was a wrestling state qualifier at 165 pounds. He went on to be a three-year letter winner in wrestling at Iowa State University. The following are some of his many wrestling achievements: College 1966 - Midlands Champion, 191 1968 - Big “8” Conference Champion, 191 1969 - Big “8” Conference Champion, 191 1969 - Division I NCAA All- American (5th place), 191 1969 - Member of NCAA Championship Team 1969 - Recipient of Walt Smith Ring Award (Outstanding Senior) Post Collegiate 1970 - AAU National Greco-Roman Champion, 220 1972 - Alternate on US Olympic Greco-Roman Team, 220 1973 - USWF National Greco-Roman Champion, 220 1973 - Member of USA World Team in Greco-Roman, 220 (World Championships in Tehran, Iran) Coaching 1975-1977 - Grinnell High School (Grinnell, Iowa) 1978-2007 - Basic High School (Henderson, Nevada) Two State Championship Teams, 21 Individual Championships Hall of Fames East High School HOF Glen Brand HOF of Iowa Nevada Chapter of US HOF Nevada Interscholastic HOF Athletic Association HOF Iowa Wrestling HOF Jim lives in Henderson, Nevada with his wife Doris. They have one son, Weston. He lives nearby in Las Vegas. Wayne Love - 2018 Central High (1981) Wayne Love began wrestling at the Boys Club in Waterloo with Coach Bill Tate Sr. and went on to earn many outstanding State and National achievements as did many other Boys Club alumnus. Wayne was a 3X State Placewinner at Central for Coach Gene Luttrell winning a State Championship at 167 his junior year and placing 6th at 155 as a sophomore and taking 3rd place his senior year at 167. Wayne was a three-sport athlete being named a First-Team All State football player his senior year and also placing 3rd in State in the 100m on the famous Blue Oval. Wayne continued wrestling and playing football at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls where he was a 2X JUCO All-American placing 5th his freshmen year and was a national runner-up his senior year both at 177. Wayne transferred to Northwest Missouri State continuing to wrestle and play football where he earned Division II All-American status earning the Runner-up spot his Jr. year at 177 and placing 4th his senior season at 177. Wayne was also a Jr. Pan American Games Champion in 1982 at the PanAm Games held in Cali, Colombia. Wayne earned his BS in Sociology from Northwest Missouri State and currently is a Substance Abuse Counselor in Springfield, MO where he and his wife Jill and their daughter Ebony live. Mike Narey - 2018 Contributor Raised in Waterloo, Mike Narey has spent over four decades involved with state and national wrestling. Living in Iowa City in 1973, he founded Quality Mat--a mat refinishing business. He moved the company to Waterloo in 1981 and five years later purchased a large building at 410 Rath Street. The business boomed and developed a nationwide reputation for its attention to quality and service. At its peak in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Quality Mat had over 20 employees and serviced mats around the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe. Always willing to promote wrestling, Mike provided mats for the first Junior National tournaments in Iowa City and continued doing so at the UNI Dome when the massive event moved to Cedar Falls. “Gary Kurdelmeier [the late head coach at Iowa] was a big factor in the business expanding,” said Mike. “He got us in on the ground floor at the Junior Nationals in Iowa City and that allowed us to meet and make friends with coaches from across the nation. That was huge!” But it was Jon Marks, a close confidant to both Kurdelmeier and his assistant coach at the time, Dan Gable, who encouraged Mike to try the business. “Jon was the guy who got me started,” said Mike. “He introduced me to the right people and Jon played a key role in Quality Mat’s early successes.” Quality Mat has provided mats for the Iowa State wrestling championships in Des Moines, the DII championships at Young Arena, the Battle of Waterloo for a couple years, camps at Iowa, UNI and Wartburg and has worked closely with those programs in other areas as well. Mike said guys like Bernie Stroh, who served as Quality Mat office manager for over two decades, were key to the company’s growth in addition to Dave Moses and Tony Cordes, former state champions at West Waterloo. “Bernie handled a lot of the marketing and operations,” said Mike. “Tony Cordes was the perfect artist for school mascots, and Dave Moses is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever known. Both were major, major assets.” Others who Mike singled out for their contributions are Vic Marcucci, former NCAA champion at Iowa State; Jim Zalesky, three-time NCAA champion at Iowa; Jim Miller, former head coach at Wartburg and former high school coaches Bob Siddens, Don Huff and Steve Knipp. “They all helped out in various ways through the years,” said Mike. And being close friends with Dan Gable for many decades was also a big boost when he was growing the business, he quickly added. Mike attended Columbus High School, Ellsworth Junior College and graduated from Drake in 1968 with a degree in political science. Quality Mat closed its doors in 2014. Mike is now retired and still lives in Waterloo. .

The grief center -- located next to the Hospice Center – was renamed to honor their contributions. Jim Bunning was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996 after a 17-year Major League Baseball career as a pitcher. A Republican from Kentucky, Bunning served in the U.S. Senate for 10 years.     Grimm falls short of induction, but all isn’t lost in Hall bid By Paul Ladewski Posted on Monday, December the 7th Charlie Grimm posted 946 victories in his long and successful career as Cubs manager, but what would have been the biggest victory of all eluded him today. The Hall of Fame veterans committee announced that former umpire Doug Harvey and manager Whitey Herzog had received the minimum 12 votes necessary for induction, a standard of which Grimm fell short by a considerable margin. Grimm received three votes among the 16 that were cast, 11 fewer than Herzog despite their remarkably similar managerial careers. Harvey was named on all except one ballot. Of the 10 candidates, Grimm was among five that received at least three votes. “The committee members were instructed to keep their talks private, but I can tell you that we had a thorough discussion about Grimm and his career,” Baseball Writers Association of American secretary Jack O’Connell told the Chicago Baseball Museum. “He had the support of several people in the room, and that should be viewed as a positive. It bodes well for his candidacy in the future.” A native of New Athlens, Ill., Herzog won 53 percent of his games (1,281- 1,125 record) in 18 seasons with the Texas Rangers, California Rangers, Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals. His teams won as many as 90 games five times. In 19 seasons, all or parts of 13 in a Cubs uniform, Grimm won 55 percent of his games (1,287-1,067) and reached the 90-victory plateau on four occasions.

For their new fans to gloat about, the renamed Minnesota Twins brought with them three pennants won in Washington, in 1924, '25 and '33, and a world championship in 1924. Now, their new boosters could claim a share of such Senator greats as Clark C. (Old Fox) Griffith, Wolter (Big Train) Johnson, Joe Cronin, Lean (Goose) Goslin, Clyde (Deerfoot) Milan, Ed Delahanty, James (Mickey) Vernon, Roy Sievers, and others. Reciprocally, the Twins could now absorb the glories of 18 American Asso- ciation pennants - nine won by St. Paul and nine by Minneapolis - in 59 seasons. They could be reminded of the tremendous pennant burst by St. Paul in 1920, with the Saints winning 115, losing only 49, posting a .701 percentage, and running away from Joe McCarthy's second-place Louisville Colonels by 28 1/2 games. Mike Kelley, the American Association's grand old man, managed that one and four other Saints flag winners before buying the Minneapolis club and putting together three more championship combinations. "Mr. Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life either by an honest acceptance by him of his wrongdoing, so clearly established by the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of the circumstances that led to his permanent eligibility in 1989. Absent such credible evidence, allowing him to work in the game presents an unacceptable risk of a future violation by him of Rule 21, and thus to the integrity of our sport," Manfred wrote. "I, therefore, must reject Mr. Rose's application for reinstatement." The all-time hits leader, 74, was placed on the permanently ineligible list for violating Major League Baseball's strict rule against betting on baseball on Aug. 23, 1989. Subsequently, the Board of Directors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum declared that all players on that list would also be ineligible for election. Manfred's decision, which was communicated to Rose both verbally and in writing, does not directly address that issue.
