Fine, clean copy, presented by Addison’s widow to Addison’s friend Henry Lonsdale (1816-76), with a unique binding with the gilt-stamped ornament on the front cover reading “Presented by Mrs. Addison,” instead of the usual title lettering, and inscription on the front free endpaper, presumably in the hand of Mrs. Addison, reading: “To Dr. Lonsdale one of the Author’s best & kind friends.” A very fine copy, preserved in a custom leather box. First edition, the only known presentation copy, presented by Addison’s widow to Addison’s friend Henry Lonsdale (1816-76), with a unique binding with the gilt-stamped ornament on the front cover reading “Presented by Mrs. Addison,” instead of the usual title lettering, and inscription on the front free endpaper, presumably in the hand of Mrs. Addison, reading: “To Dr. Lonsdale one of the Author’s best & kind friends.” Addison’s monograph inaugurated the study of diseases of the ductless glands and the disturbances in chemical equilibrium known as pluriglandular syndromes; it also marks the beginning of modern ADDISON, Thomas. -

With a direction entrusted exclusively to the Jesuits, the University contributed to the inuence and expansion of the religious order in the region and was a powerful instrument of the Counter-Reformation. In 1768, the Uni- versity did not escape from the banishment of the Jesuits from France and was therefore closed and transferred to the University of Nancy (see Martin (1891) and Guénée (1981)). 2 Sources Eugène Martin (1859 – 1948), Doctor of Letters and Prelate of the Diocese of Nancy, is the author of “L’Université de Pont-à-Mousson (1572 – 1768)” (Martin 1891). The book focuses on the history of the University from its establishment to its closure, but also describes the internal organization, and the student and teacher bodies. In addition to this main source, the “Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus” by Carlos Sommervogel (1890) oers an extensive catalogue with biographical references to the Jesuits. -

Journal de la régionale de Picardie Octobre 2009 n°9 Edito : Nouvelle rentrée, nouveaux programmes, nouveau numéro de Récurrence ! Nouveaux programmes au collège*: une réécriture après les changements faits dans la précipitation des programmes de l’enseignement primaire. Mais sur le fond, les contenus diffèrent peu de ceux des textes précédents. Le sujet du DNB** donné en juin en a surpris plus d’un : on est loin des questions purement techniques posées en dehors de toute problématique ! Au contraire, beaucoup de questions nécessitaient des adaptations, des prises d’initiative de la part des élèves, avec une place prépondérante des fonctions, traduction des nouveautés du programme de troisième, ce à quoi ils n’étaient pas tous préparés, leurs professeurs non plus... Le nouveau programme de seconde, publié au BO tardivement ( le 23 juillet) a réintégré l’introduction de la notion de vecteur et une petite place à la trigonométrie. Mais à la lecture du programme se dégage une impression d’ajouts précipités, de « bricolage » sur les contenus de ces deux chapitres. Les interrogations et les attentes des collègues concernent surtout l’algorithmique. Des interrogations demeurent quant à la finalité de son introduction en seconde, quand par ailleurs, l’épreuve pratique au bac S disparaît après deux ans d’expérimentation. Qu'en sera-t-il dans les programmes de cycle terminal ? Un gros effort de formation des collègues dans le domaine de l’algorithmique semble nécessaire vu les inquiétudes formulées : faut-il maîtriser la programmation ? Quel langage utiliser ? Quel temps faut-il y consacrer en classe ? Sans oublier de continuer à emmener nos élèves en salle info pour manipuler des logiciels ( tableur, géométrie dynamique…) ! Et les maths dans tout ça ? Transmission of the Calculus from Kerala to Europe Part 2: Circumstantial and documentary evidence Aryabhata Group1 School of Education University of Exeter Part I proposed to take a legal view of the evidence for the transmission to Europe of the calculus that had developed in the works of the mathematicians and astronomers of the Aryabhata school between the 14th and 16th centuries. We established strong motivation for the transmission in the needs of navigation and the calendar reform, which were recognised as the most important scientific problems of that age in Europe. We also established that Europeans had ample opportunity to access the texts and calendrical almanacs in which this information was to be found, not only in the straightforward sense that they knew the local languages well, but also in the sense that trained mathematicians were sent for the express purpose of collecting the knowledge available in these texts. Given this it would seem a foregone conclusion that the Indian mathematical manuscripts incorporating the calculus had already reached Europe by around 1580. Nevertheless, it is important to detail the circumstantial and documentary evidence, for it helps also to understand how this knowledge, after arriving in Europe, diffused in Europe. (Apart from historical curiosity, this is also a matter of contemporary pedagogical significance, since it enables us to assess, in a non-destructive way, the possible impact of introducing today the study of calculus with a different epistemological basis.) We know too little even to conjecture anything about the accumulation of knowledge in Coimbra , nor exactly what happened to this accumulated knowledge after Jesuits 1 The Aryabhata Group acknowledges financial support from the School of Education, University of Exeter, in the work that led to this paper.
