Summary: The papers of Los Angeles Abstract Classicist painter and educator Frederick Hammersley measure 35.05 linear feet and date from circa 1860-2009, bulk 1940-2009. The papers contain biographical materials, 32 diaries, family and professional correspondence, personal business and financial records, estate records, writings, graphic design projects, teaching files, printed materials, scrapbooks, photographs, and works of art. There is a 0.3 linear foot unprocessed addition to this collection donated in 2020 that includes photographs of Hammersley's family, and most significantly for research, a study in pencil and a "model for making cubes," a paper document that can be stored flat and folded into a cube shape. Administrative Information Acquisition Information Frederick Hammersley donated his papers to the Archives of American Art in nine accessions from 1974 to 2008. The Frederick Hammersley Foundation donated additional papers in 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2020 via Executive Director, Kathleen Shields. Related Materials The Archives of American Art also holds the Tamara Webster papers relating to Frederick Hammersley. Available Formats The bulk of the collection was digitized in 2013-2014 and is available on the Archives of American Art's website. Materials which have not been scanned include blank pages, duplicates, negatives and slides, blank versos of photographs, and sensitive financial records. Additional papers donated in 2015 and 2018 have not been digitized. Biographical / Historical Painter, graphic designer, and educator Frederick Hammersley (1919-2009) spent most of his career in Los Angeles and New Mexico. He is closely associated with the hard-edge abstraction painting style of the Abstract Classicists of Southern California. Hammersley was born on January 5, 1919 to Anna Westberg and Harold Hammersley in Salt Lake City, where his father worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior. The family lived in Utah and Idaho before finally settling in San Francisco. Hammersley attended the University of Idaho and later enrolled in the Academy of Advertising Art in San Francisco. In 1940, Hammersley began taking classes at the Chouinard Art Institution in Los Angeles. Hammersley's studies were interrupted by World War II military service from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed first in Paris as a draftsman in the Signal Corp and was eventually promoted to Army sargeant in the Office of Military Government in Berlin. While in Paris, he visited Picasso's studio several times and also took classes at the Ècole des Beaux Arts at the end of the war. When he returned home in 1946, the GI Bill subsidized his final year of study at Chouinard, now the California Institute of Arts, and three years at the Jepson Art Institute in Los Angeles. Hammersley made his living as an art professor in California for twenty years, where he taught at the Jepson Art Institute and Pomona College in Claremont. He moved to Albuquerque after accepting a teaching position at the University of New Mexico in 1968. In 1971, Hammersley resigned his teaching position and devoted himself to painting. Page 2 of 80 Frederick Hammersley papers AAA.hammfred Hammersley's reputaton as a painter began in 1948 when one of his small paintings was accepted in an annual exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 1958, several of his works were included in the seminal exhibition Four Abstract Classicists, organized by Jules Langsner and Peter Selz and shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Hammersley, and fellow painters Lorser Feitelson, Karl Benjamin, and John McLaughlin, were dubbed the "hard-edged painters," whose style consisted of flat, colored geometric shapes that were a sharp contrast to the more popular Abstract Expressionism. The label stuck and in the mid 1970s, Hammersley submitted several works of art for a show called L.A. Hard Edge, a show that featured art from the 1950s and 1970s. During the late 1970s and 1980s, Hammersley exhibited in several one-man shows, including at L.A. Louver in Venice, California, the Hoshour Gallery in Albuquerque, and the Corcoran in Washington, D.C. In 2000, the Laguna Art Museum presented a traveling exhibition organized by the Museum of Fine Arts in Sante Fe, and the Pomona College Museum of Art organized a retrospective in 2007. His work is in museum collections across the country, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Hammersley died in 2009 at the age of 90. He was survived by his sister, Susie Hammersley Stone. The exhibition includes organic abstractions, as well as rarely seen collage paintings, known as “cut-ups,” made by Hammersley between 1963 and 1965. During the early 1960s, Hammersley primarily pursued an intuitive approach to his work, creating small-scale curvilinear abstractions that he painted in oil on linen, Masonite or chipboard. These organic paintings largely pre-date the planned formality of Hammersley’s geometric compositions that he painted with a palette knife, and with which he became identified in the 1970s. Concurrent with the organic paintings, Hammersley made collages, beginning 21 February 1964. He titled his first collage work Cut-up, and the title now serves to descibe these works. To make a “cut-up,” Hammersley took a completed abstract painting, cut it into squares or oblong forms, rearranged the parts, and mounted it in its re-formed composition. Whereas the organic abstractions are primarily horizontal in orientation, the cut-ups have a vertical format. Hammersley pursued this collage activity during two brief periods, the first in February 1964, and the second almost exactly a year later.

    Greenberg Van Doren Gallery N E W Y O R K October 2, 2011 Pacific Standard Time: Open your eyes to John McLaughlin John McLaughlin’s “#26” (1961) works against our natural binocular vision. (John McLaughlin) Rico Lebrun was probably the most famous Modern American artist working in Los Angeles in the decade following World War II. Yet, when the J. Paul Getty Museum opened "Crosscurrents in L.A. Painting and Sculpture, 1950-1970" on Saturday, kicking off the mammoth, region-wide survey of Los Angeles art dubbed Pacific Standard Time, Lebrun's paintings were nowhere to be seen. Reputations rise and fall. Lebrun arrived in L.A. in 1938, worked at the old Chouinard Art Institute and got a job teaching Disney animators how to draw convincing animal motion for "Bambi." The same year that the movie was released, New York's Museum of Modern Art selected him for "Americans 1942: 18 Artists From 9 States." It was the first of six legendary survey exhibitions organized by Dorothy C. Miller, the nation's most influential curator, to introduce adventurous Modern American art to a cautious public. But Lebrun turns out not to be the artist who deserves the stellar ranking as L.A.'s first artist of authentically international stature. That accolade goes to John McLaughlin (1898-1976). He was mostly self-taught, but McLaughlin's unprecedented work marks the beginning of great postwar art in Los Angeles.     1960 Paintings by Streeter Blair (January 12–February 7) A publisher and an antique dealer for most of his life, Streeter Blair (1888–1966) began painting at the age of 61 in 1949. Blair became quite successful in a short amount of time with numerous exhibitions across the United States and Europe, including several one-man shows as early as 1951. He sought to recapture “those social and business customs which ended when motor cars became common in 1912, changing the life of America’s activities” in his artwork. He believed future generations should have a chance to visually examine a period in the United States before drastic technological change. This exhibition displayed twenty-one of his paintings and was well received by the public. Three of his paintings, the Eisenhower Farm loaned by Mr. & Mrs. George Walker, Bread Basket loaned by Mr. Peter Walker, and Highland Farm loaned by Miss Helen Moore, were sold during the exhibition. [Newsletter, memo, various letters] The Private World of Pablo Picasso (January 15–February 7) A notable exhibition of paintings, drawings, and graphics by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), accompanied by photographs of Picasso by Life photographer David Douglas Duncan (1916– 2018). Over thirty pieces were exhibited dating from 1900 to 1956 representing Picasso’s Lautrec, Cubist, Classic, and Guernica periods. These pieces supplemented the 181 Duncan photographs, shown through the arrangement of the American Federation of Art. The selected photographs were from the book of the same title by Duncan and were the first ever taken of Picasso in his home and studio.

(105.1 x 156 cm) Venice, CA –- L.A. Louver is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Charles Garabedian. Created between 1966 and 1976, the works exemplify the rich diversity of form, image making, and materials that hallmark this early stage of Garabedian’s career. Garabedian’s work is wonderfully perverse, since he is completely uninterested in abiding by the rules of good taste, draftsmanship, appropriate subject matter, formal composition, or stylistic consistency. --- Marcia Tucker Garabedian’s work is frequently figurative, often narrative (although narratives are ellusive) and occasionally abstract. He tackles the extremities of life and death, offering a rich stew of passion, greed, sex, violence, celebrity and modernity, in distinctly personal work that embraces his love of literature, and of the ancient cultures of China and Greece. The encroaching influence of the moving image projected into American homes is the subject ofDaytime TV, 1966. Garabedian used Flo-paque (a plastic paint) and fired ceramic to make this collaged collision of images, and painted the TV’s surround to suggest a city scene outside the viewer’s window. The influence of camera lens perspective is evident inRestaurant (The Waitress), also 1966, with its female figure far-grounded, and dwarfed by the receding perspective of looming industrial-sized kitchen equipment aglow under harsh ceiling lights.

    KARL BENJAMIN (1925 – 2012) “You can look at these electrifying paintings forever and always see something different.” – David Pagel “I can think of no other artist whose paintings exude the joy and pleasure of being an artist with more intensity than Karl Benjamin’s…” – Dave Hickey Born in Chicago, Karl Benjamin began his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1943. Interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Benjamin resumed his studies at Southern California’s University of Redlands in 1946. Graduating in 1949 with a B.A. degree in English literature, history and philosophy, Benjamin began his career as a teacher with no intention of becoming an artist. However, his relocation to Claremont, California in 1952, shortly after he began “playing” with paint in 1951, galvanized his sense of his career path. Though Benjamin continued to teach in public schools and later to great acclaim, as Professor Emeritus for Pomona College, the artist’s work blossomed amid the extraordinarily lively art, design and architecture scene in Los Angeles in the mid- twentieth century. Numerous gallery showings of his work during the 50’s culminated in 1959 with Benjamin’s inclusion in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s ground- breaking exhibition, “Four Abstract Classicists: Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, Frederick Hammersley and John McLaughlin.” The exhibition garnered national attention for the artist, along with the creation of a moniker for Benjamin’s meticulously orchestrated color and form: Hard Edge Painting. Subsequently, Benjamin’s work was included in the traveling exhibition, “Purist Painting”. The Whitney Museum of American Art (NY) went on to feature Benjamin in their exhibition, “Geometric Abstraction in America” (1962), while the Museum of Modern Art (NY) also included work by the artist in their watershed show, “The Responsive Eye” (1965).
