“If you are working on a problem you can solve in your lifetime, you’re thinking too small.” Wes Jackson I have been blessed to spend time with some of our nation’s most prominent civil rights leaders— truly extraordinary people. When I listen to them tell their stories about how hard they fought to combat the issues of their day, how long it took them, and the fact that they never stopped fighting, it grounds me. Those extraordinary people worked at what they knew they would never finish in their lifetimes. I have come to understand that the historical arc of this country always bends toward progress. It doesn’t come without a fight, and it doesn’t come in a single lifetime. It is the job of each generation of leaders to run the race with truth, honor, and integrity, then hand the baton to the next generation to continue the fight. That is what our foremothers and forefathers did. It is what we must do, for we are at that moment in history yet again. We have been passed the baton, and our job is to stretch this work as far as we can and run as hard as we can, to then hand it off to the next generation because we can see their outstretched hands. This project has been deeply emotional for me. It brought me back to my youthful days in Los Angeles when I would be constantly harassed, handcuffed, searched at gunpoint - all illegal, but I don’t know that then. I can still feel the terror I felt every time I saw a police cruiser. -

Cleveland, Detroit, Newark, and Minneapolis have all merited extensive studies of Jewish gangsters. Chicago, with its much larger Jewish population, has not. Perhaps the dominance, notoriety, and public image of Al Capone has dissuaded potential researchers. Until now. This is not to say that no studies of Chicago’s Jewish underworld exist. They do. In 1927, Frederick Thrasher wrote The Gang, which includes material showing that, alongside the Polish, Italian, and Irish mobs, up to five per cent of the city’s gangs were Jewish. -

Forced Entry 30Th November 2015
Forced Entry th 30 November 2015 Acknowledgements I would like to thank Shaun Costello for taking time to answer my questions, and Martin Brooks, Oliver Carter, and Tony Richards for their valuable suggestions. ‘There is no better way to know death than to link it through some licentious image’ The Marquis De Sade (Quoted in Bataille 1986: 11) Forced Entry (Shaun Costello, 1972) is a sexually violent feature film which blurs perceptions of 1970s American hardcore cinema as a ‘golden age’ of creative ambition, commercial possibility and broader mainstream acceptance, a phenomenon that has been identified most resonantly as ‘porno chic’. This term originated in Ralph Blumenthal’s (1973) New York Times article bearing the same name, and soon entered into discussions on pornography’s role within that decade’s liberal trends of morality and sexuality, before achieving later ubiquity in various inquiries into porn’s 21st century cultural status (See McNair 2012). This was prompted by the succès de scandale of Deep Throat (Gerard Damiano, 1972), Behind The Green Door (Artie and Jim Mitchell, 1972), The Resurrection of Eve (Jon Fontana and Artie Mitchell, 1973) and The Devil in Miss Jones (Gerard Damiano, 1973). All of these films were male authored, but dealt in some way with both the potential and the limitations of a female protagonist’s sexual assertion relative to masculine primacy, in scenarios which were either conventionally dramatic, comedic or even steeped in the supernatural. However, in Forced Entry, not only is the film male authored, but its point of view is channelled through a psychologically disturbed Vietnam war veteran - now a New York gas station attendant - who stalks selected female customers before raping and murdering them in their homes, seemingly as a punishment for sexual assertiveness and social independence which threaten his fragile claims to masculine authority.
