The dissertation consists of two parts. The first part is a conceptual analysis and a genealogy of the distinction through focus on specific private characters produced in both antiquity and modernity. I focus on the characters of the “woman” and the “refugee.” Conceptually, I argue that the public/private distinction can be seen both as an anthropological distinction and as a socio-political distinction: claims about the structure, nature, and history of selves have implications for how society ought to be organized, and claims about how society ought to be organized have implications about the structure, nature, and history of selves.

Phillip Cary, Ph.D. Professor of Philosophy, Eastern University Professor Phillip Cary is Director of the Philosophy Program at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, where he is also Scholar-in- Residence at the Templeton Honors College. He earned his B.A. in both English Literature and Philosophy at Washington University in St. Louis, then earned an M.A. in Philosophy and a Ph.D. in both Philosophy and Religious Studies at Yale University. Professor Cary has taught at Yale University, the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut, and Villanova University. He was an Arthur J. Ennis Post-Doctoral Fellow at Villanova University, where he taught in Villanova’s nationally acclaimed Core Humanities program. At Eastern University, he is a recent winner of the Lindback Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching.

												  Phillip Cary, Ph.D. Pro Ecclesia 14/4 (Fall 2005) 447-486 Why Luther Is Not Quite Protestant: the Logic of Faith in a SacramenPhillip Cary, Ph.D. Pro Ecclesia 14/4 (Fall 2005) 447-486 Why Luther is Not Quite Protestant: The Logic of Faith in a Sacramental Promise John Calvin honored Martin Luther as a pioneer of the Reformation, whose work was completed by those following after him who were not so entangled in the old ways of the medieval church.1 Ever afterwards many Protestants have regarded Luther as not fully Protestant, certainly not as consistently Protestant as Calvin. This is a reasonable judgment. There are a number of points, most prominently in his sacramental theology, where Luther is closer to Catholicism than the Reformed tradition ever gets.2 This of course makes Luther ecumenically very interesting, a possible bridge between sundered territories of the Christian church. For one who is not fully Protestant may by the same token be less one-sidedly Protestant. Against a background of extensive agreement Calvin diverges from Luther in ways that can be described as narrow but deep, like a small crack that goes a long way down. The crack widens in later versions of the Reformed tradition as well as its offshoots, such as the Baptist and revivalist traditions. A useful mark by which to locate this widening crack is the doctrine of baptismal regeneration.
