  • Lenten Meditation Booklet
Dear Friend in Christ. Lent is a time when we look for the deeper connections to our faith. Many of us approach this season in different ways, but one thing we have in common as Christians is the knowledge that we do not walk this path alone. Jesus built the Church as a community, as a body and as a family. During times of spiritual growth, we often turn to the insights and guidance of others to aid our own spiritual development. Over the years, we have had wonderful feedback on our Lenten Meditations. That feedback has given us a sense of what readers find nurturing and life-giving on their own Lenten journeys. In this book, we have returned to meditations from the last ten years that have touched our readers most deeply. In doing so, we were reminded that we have been fortunate to share reflections from many gifted writers, teachers, theologians and spiritual guides. As we walk together as followers of Jesus, we provide each other strength for the journey. We hope you will continue to share with us the experience of your Lenten journey and how Episcopal Relief & Development and our partners can accompany you along the way. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support as we work together for lasting change. May God continue to richly bless you this Lent and throughout the Church year. Josephine Hicks Vice President, Episcopal Church Programs Episcopal Relief & Development For over 75 years, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working together with supporters and partners for lasting change around the world.

  • Bachman, Ezrin, Pieczonka Honoured by Royal Conservatory of Music David Rockne Corrigan
May 23, 2013 MUSIC Bachman, Ezrin, Pieczonka honoured by Royal Conservatory of Music David Rockne Corrigan Randy Bachman, Bob Ezrin, and Adrianne Pieczonka were named Honourary Fellows of The Royal Conservatory of Music on Wednesday night at Toronto’s Koerner Hall. At the Royal Occasion Gala, audience members were treated to performances by the internationally-acclaimed musicians. Pieczonka, an alumna of The Royal Conservatory, is a soprano opera singer who has performed all over the world. Raised in Burlington, she looks back fondly on her time studying piano at the Royal Conservatory in Hamilton, and she has maintained a relationship since. “I trained at Western University and at U of T but the Royal Conservatory is so close to the faculty of music at U of T that I often spent time there — either practicing or in the wonderful bookshop,” she said. Adrianne Pieczonka, pictured here in 2011, was honoured at last night's "Royal Occasion Gala" at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Pieczonka, who is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, says Canadians should take pride in their musicians, especially as more people are starting to notice them on the global stage. “Canada is a fantastic place to train as an opera singer,” she said. “I sing all over the world and I am often asked, ‘Why are there so many great Canadian opera singers?’ I think the training is getting even stronger. I am so impressed hearing the young artists in the [Canadian Opera Company's] ensemble program or the students in the voice programs at the universities.” Some of those students were given an opportunity to perform last night–young musicians from the Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School and the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists also took the stage.

  • Bob Ezrin – Primary Wave Music
BOB EZRIN en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Ezrin The phrase “super-producer” is often used when discussing Bob Ezrin – and with good reason. After all, the Toronto native has been behind the boards of many classic albums, among them Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies, KISS’ Destroyer, and Pink Floyd’s The Wall. He has also done much to help preserve music education in Canada in the face of devastating government funding cuts. Bob Ezrin was born March 25, 1949, into a musical Toronto family in which his mother played piano and his father, bass. Ezrin’s grandfather, a musical theatre amateur, taught him to dance to Al Jolson’s “Me and My Shadow” when Ezrin was just two. Ezrin went on to learn classical piano at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music and spent off-hours as a teen taking in the likes of Joni Mitchell at his uncle’s music club, The Penny Farthing in the mid-‘60s. At age 19 he was taken under the wing of The Guess Who producer Jack Richardson who sent him to fellow producer Phil Ramone’s Eastman School of Music “boot camp” in Rochester, New York. Upon his return, Richardson sent Ezrin to New York to check out shock rocker Alice Cooper, whose manager Shep Gordon was insistent Richardson produce them. Ezrin was blown away by Cooper’s performance at Max’s Kansas City and ended up co-producing the band’s 1971 album Love It to Death with the initially reluctant Richardson. Ezrin would go on to work with Cooper multiple times, including on his most recent record, 2011’s Welcome 2 My Nightmare.

  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.
