Modelling Suspicion as a Game Mechanism for Designing a Computer-Played Investigation Character Nahum Alvarez1 and Federico Peinado2 1 Production Department, Gameloft Tokyo 151-0061 Tokyo, Japan [email protected] 2 Departamento de Ingeniería del Software e Inteligencia Artificial, Facultad de Informática, Universidad Complutense de Madrid 28040 Madrid, Spain [email protected] Abstract. Nowadays creating believable characters is a top trend in the video game industry. Recent projects present new design concepts and improvements in artificial intelligence that are oriented to this goal. The expected behaviour of computer-played characters becomes increasingly demanding: proactivity, au- tonomous decision-making, social interaction, natural communication, reason- ing and knowledge management, etc. Our research project explores the possibil- ity for one of these characters to investigate, solving an enigma while dealing with incomplete information and the lies of other characters. In this paper we propose how to manage trust issues when modelling suspicion in the artificial mind of a Columbo-like detective, considering that our desired gameplay is a murder mystery game in which the player plays the role of the culprit. Keywords. Interactive Digital Storytelling, Video Game Design, Artificial In- telligence, Believable Characters, Epistemic Modal Logic, Trust Systems 1 Introduction Computer simulations allow a high grade of realism; however, computer-controlled characters in virtual worlds still feel like mere automatons: the user gives an input and receives a response. Advances in intelligent behaviour are changing the user experi- ence, improving these characters’ performance and expanding the scope of their po- tential uses. One aspect that refrain us from believing such characters are “alive” is that they seem completely “naive”: they will believe without doubts all the infor- mation received from other sources.

  • It's So Easy Being Green
National Aeronautics and Space Administration roundupLyndon B. Johnson Space Center JSC2008E020395 NASA/BLAIR It’s so easy being green APRIL 2008 ■ volume 47 ■ number 4 A few safetyrelated events have been on my mind recently, and I need your help! First of all, I want to emphasize there is nothing we do in our space program that would require us to take safety shortcuts or unnecessary risks. Spaceflight is inherently risky, including the development and testing of stateoftheart materials and designs. To be perfectly safe, we would never leave the ground, but that is not the business we chose and it is not the mission our nation gave us. But we should not and cannot add unnecessary risks. None of us should ever feel pressured to do anything we deem unsafe in order to meet a schedule. We have learned to launch when we are ready and not before, and I’m impressed with the number of times we have delayed launches because of reasonable concerns expressed by individuals. My point is: don’t let anyone pressure you into doing something that you consider unsafe. I will back you up. Second, I am concerned that there is reluctance on the part of some folks to report safety incidents such as minor injuries or mishaps or close calls. Their fear is that such reports will affect our safety metrics, such as lost time, days away, Occupational Safety and Health Administration recordable, etc. Let me state very clearly and forcefully that the sole goal of director our safety program is to make our work environment as safe as possible for all our employees.

ENGLISH 2810: Television as Literature (v. 1.0) 9:00 – 10:15 T/Th | EH 229 Dr. Scott Rogers | [email protected] | EH 448 http://faculty.weber.edu/srogers The Course The average American watches about 5 hours of television a day. We are told that this is bad. We are told that television is bad for us, that it is bad for our families, and that it is wasting our time. But not all television is that way. Some television shows have what we might call “literary pretensions.” Shows such as Twin Peaks, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, and LOST have been both critically acclaimed and the subject of much academic study. In this course, we shall examine a select few of these shows, watching complete seasons as if they were self-contained literary texts. In other words, in this course, you will watch TV and get credit for it. You will also learn to view television in an active and critical fashion, paying attention to the standard literary techniques (e.g. character, theme, symbol, plot) as well as televisual issues such as lighting, music, and camerawork. Texts Students will be expected to own, or have access to, the following: Firefly ($18 on amazon.com; free on hulu.com) and Serenity ($4 used on amazon.com) LOST season one ($25 on amazon.com; free on hulu.com or abc.com) Battlestar Galactica season one ($30 on amazon.com) It is in your best interest to buy or borrow these, if only to make it easier for you to go back and re-watch episodes for your assignments.

After a conversation with my thesis guide, Professor Slembrouck, we decided to stick on to film discourse but to expand it.

The bill is named after Peter Falk, the actor who played Columbo on TV. What it does seems basic — it simply allows families to see their loved ones when they become incapacitated. It’s about the power of guardians and the rights of some of the most vulnerable Coloradans. Peter Falk was known to TV viewers as the disheveled, endearing detective Columbo. Catherine Falk knew him as “Dad. “He was exactly the same on screen as off screen,” Catherine Falk said. “He was just this tender, really funny, goofy person.” But Peter Falk’s life would take a tragic turn when he developed Alzheimer’s disease. His second wife isolated him, forcing his daughter to go to probate court just to see her father before he died.

  • Amelia Island Concours D'elegance
One more for the bucket list: Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance It was Sunday at 10:30 AM, and I had missed my chance to enter the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance before the line into the show field grew to what looked like thousands of people. This was just the tip of the iceberg, as thousands more already had gained entrance. It was my first Amelia Island Concours, but no, I don’t regret being late to the show. Early that morning, I had walked down to the parking garage on a tip that there would be a couple cars worth photographing on their way out to the field: the Porsche Museum’s 909 Bergspyder and hallowed flat-16-powered 917 PA. In the garage, it was easy to admire their curves, their history, and their cylinder count — 24 between the two of them. Behind the chain-link fence guarding the RM Auction cars, the two Porsches sat. Not another car back there could sway my attention. At 8 AM, they were tugged from their slumber by a golf cart and pulled to the show field. A few Porsches parked on my side of the fence were able to peel me away from the museum-kept racecars for a few moments. The first was the No. 67 BF Goodrich 1985 962, which was driven by Amelia Island honoree Jochen Mass at the 1985 24 Hours of Daytona, where he placed third overall. PCA member Bob Russo, the man who restored it, was standing by its side and spoke to me about the build and how it was finished just the week before.
