Yahoo! Sports Launches Official Sponsorship of the National Hockey Yahoo! Sports Launches Official Sponsorship of the National Hockey League Online Fan Balloting Allows Visitors to Select Starting Lineups for the 49th NHL All-Star Game SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Nov. 10, 1998 -- Aimed at bringing hockey to fans worldwide through the Internet, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO), a leading global Internet media company, today announced its official sponsorship of the National Hockey League (NHL)(R) and the NHL Players' Association (NHLPA) in the Internet navigation guide sponsorship category. As part of the sponsorship program, Yahoo!(R) Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com) will become an official media sponsor of the 49th NHL All-Star Game, as well as the official online balloting arm of the NHL All-Star international showdown. Through December 15, hockey enthusiasts will be able to visit the front page of Yahoo! Sports and cast an online vote for their favorite NHL All-Stars. The 49th NHL All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, January 24 at the Ice Palace in Tampa, Florida and broadcast at 4:00 p.m. ET on FOX in the United States and on CBC/SRC in Canada. As part of the sponsorship program, Yahoo! Sports is an official sponsor the 1999 NHL All-Star Weekend to be held in Tampa, Florida from January 23 to 24, 1999. As an official sponsor, Yahoo! Sports will receive several promotional opportunities, including a Yahoo! dasherboard to be displayed during all All-Star Weekend arena events. Yahoo! Sports will also be a presenting sponsor of the "Cool Cuts" segment on NHL Cool ShotsÔ, the League's national weekly lifestyle television show. The perfect draft can be thought of as what would happen if a general manager (GM) could redo a draft with complete knowledge of prospects’ career values as well as other teams’ choices. On the other side, poor drafting or mishandling of draft picks in transactions can lead to many years of a poor product on the field of play. Focusing on ice hockey, there has been prior research projects into the value of the draft and draft picks at the National Hockey League level however the same cannot be said for junior hockey in Canada, specifically the Ontario Hockey League which will be the main area of focus. The objective of the thesis will be to determine value of each individual draft selection in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection in order to fully understand what can be expected with each pick and be better utilized in transaction and on draft day as well as to shed light on the undervaluing of draft picks. Focusing on the drafts between 1996 and 2011, data will be gathered on 4886 players drafted between those dates. From all the data points we have available for use, including games played, goals, assists and points, we will collect this information to find trends in values and similarities between positional players (forwards, defenceman and goalies).

The Philadelphia Flyers, accused last season of being more prize-fighters than hockey players, spent much of the summer pointing out that it took more than a few rights to the jaw to win the Stanley Cup. Flyers' officials and fans pointed, with justifiable pride, to their team's 1-0 victory over the Boston Bruins in the sixth and final playoff game. Philadelphia's victory in that decisive game came on the strength of excellent hockey, with nary a threat of a fight. Just when some of us were convinced that these Flyers could win without fisticuffs, along comes a disgrace such as the October 25 brawl between the Flyers and the California Golden Seals in Oakland. The fight, which took nearly 40 minutes to break up, centered around the California penalty box, where defenseman Mike Christie was the victim of a beating reportedly administered by Philadelphia's Orest Kindrachuk, Bob Kelly and Don Saleski. The incident was touched off after Christie and Kindrachuk had been escorted to the penalty box following a routine hockey fight. But when referee Bryan Lewis gave Christie only a major for fighting and gave Kindrachuk both a major and a minor, the Flyers quickly ruined all the good they had done last spring in sticking to hockey to win the final Stanley Cup game. According to reports from several eyewitnesses, Saleski went to the California penalty box and taunted Christie from the ice, apparently in an attempt to get Christie to come out of the penalty box so that he, too, might get an extra penalty.
