Ideal Home When they first viewed it ten years ago the current owners immediately fell in love with White House and have lived there ever since. “The open plan living areas and the large open fireplaces with great wood burners give it such a wonderful cosy but traditional feel,” they said. Built in the early nineteenth century, the wooden beams and old bread oven which is still in situ in the kitchen certainly give the property the feel of traditional cottage. It was originally two which were combined, and because of this there are two large brick fireplaces in each of the two main living areas, both with wood burners. There are also two staircases, both of which lead up to the two main bedrooms. The present owners have made improvements in their time, extending the kitchen and removing the box room to provide additional space, and installing a range master cooker as they love to cook. Other projects including replacing the roof around eight years ago, and at the same time new windows were added. A new shower room has been installed in the last year. “The large dining room and open plan living areas have been great for entertaining and having children and adults all socialising together,” the present owners said, adding that “The garden lends itself to barbecues and lovely evenings just chilling out.” Perhaps the most striking thing about White House is the sheer amount of living space, all of it open plan which, as the owners remarked, “Just lends itself to entertaining and socialising with friends and family.” The two bedrooms on the next floor are also very generously proportioned, and as the owners said the advantage of two bathrooms means that there is never a queue. “The guest bedroom has the potential to be converted into two rooms and this was our plan for the longer term, but we haven’t got round to doing it yet!” they said. “We regularly have families staying in the room since it has a king size bed and double sofa bed, with space for further blow up mattresses.” Outside The property has a gravelled drive to the front with space for several vehicles and to the rear a lovely established garden. “The cottage garden has colour all year round. The lavender smells amazing currently!” There are two garden sheds, one at the front and one at the rear, and also a summer house in the rear garden. As the owners pointed out, “The garden is a moderate size so doesn’t take a lot of looking after.” The raised lawned area and a paved area by the house are ideal positions from which to observe the visiting wildlife. “The buddleia attracts amazing butterflies when it’s out and many sorts of birds visit to use the bird bath. There is a constant buzz of wildlife activity and background noise when you sit and listen, which we love to do.” Traditional Village Colkirk is a peaceful rural village dating back to before the Domesday Book and comprising a variety of modern and period properties plus a thriving village school, church, village hall, and sports field. As the present owners said, “Colkirk is a lovely village with lots of easy accessed walks, a great play area and outdoor gym on the green. There’s also a good primary school and nursery in the village. The Bell, an amazing pub, is just down the road and we love to go there for its exceptional food.” If the amenities of a town are required, Fakenham is a couples of miles to the north, while Norwich and Kings Lynn are both around twenty miles by car. “We are also only twenty minutes from the North Norfolk coast so it’s very easy to pop there in the evening or weekend for a stroll and fish and chips!” the owners said.
