September 2017

Worthy As we bask in the humid summer heat of 2017 in September, we prepare ourselves for our slate of Fall events. It has been a very eventful and interesting time in and around our Mary Mother of God Community.

For me, I was able to travel a bit and visit some interesting places and equally interesting people. My work took me to England in early September and I was able to reach out and connect in with members of the Knights of St. Columba in the town of Bideford, in North Devon, on the West Coast of England. This area is where my ancestors emigrated from 136 years ago, as farmers in, around and throughout Yarnscombe Parish.

The English Knights greeted me at Mass, which was held at the Sacred Heart Church Bideford, wearing their jewels of office and hosted a reception after Mass where I met many local parishioners and had them sign my Devon flag.

But, who are the ? These Knights are a part of the International Alliance of Catholic Knights and members of the largest Catholic fraternal service organization in Britain. They were founded in in 1919 and are named in honour of Saint Columba, a Christian missionary from Ireland who helped to introduce Christianity to people in Northern Britain.

Like our own Order, they are dedicated to the principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity and have more than 4,000 members in over 300 Councils across England, Scotland and Wales. Membership is limited to practicing Catholic men aged 16 or older.

Request for Approval of Expenditure by the Dance Committee.

Special note: Our Grand Knight has not provided the Council with an acceptable budget for the 2017-18 Fraternal year. Since we have no pre-approved financial guidance regarding expenditures, we must now follow a process to obtain approval from Council members for each expenditure through motions, discussion and approval at each General meeting.

Essentially all Financial Requests MUST be approved by Council in the absence of an approved budget. Once approved requests are received by the Financial Secretary they will be processed.

Our Financial Secretary has requested that all requests include description of the request, the amount requested and the complete name and address information for any required payments, to ensure speedy processing.

Therefore, we have a Notice of Motion being presented by the Dance Committee to enable them to move forward with their planning for the upcoming Valentine’s Dance.

Notice of Motion: Whereas, the Dance Committee has secured February 17, 2018 for our Council's Family & Friends Valentine's Dance and that funds are now required to be paid out to both the Hall (Le Dome) and the Band (Freedom Train) in order to secure their participation at the event.

Be it resolved: that $500 be paid for the deposit for the Hall (Le Dome), and that $500 be paid for the deposit for the Band (Freedom Train).

Moved by: Tony Saturno and Rory Facca, Dance Committee Co-Chairs

Thanksgiving Food Drive Mary Mother of God Parish has requested the assistance of the Knights of Columbus in their upcoming Thanksgiving Food Drive. The Annual Parish Food Drive will run over the next two weekends – Sept 30th/Oct. 1st and Oct. 7th/8th.

Potential Event: The First Memorial “Luciani Bowl”

Proposed Date: Wednesday, October 11, 2017

Location: Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, 2333 Headon Forest Dr., Burlington, ON L7M 3X6

Description: A football game is being dedicated to the memory of Brother Joe Luciani between Notre Dame Secondary School and St. Thomas Aquinas.

David Montoya is the Athletic Director at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School and is coordinating the inception of a game dedicated to the memory of Brother Joe Luciani. He has set aside October 11 for what he calls the “Luciani Bowl.” His plan is to have a Memorial Service on Field at 5:30 pm followed by a football game at 6:00 pm and then a social gathering around 8:00 pm.

Mr. Montoya is still planning this event and is looking for assistance from the Knights of Columbus during the pre-game Memorial, we may need to solicit assistance from the Fourth Degree Knights, as well as to help him locate a venue for the social gathering after the event.

Does anyone know of a facility that could host such an event in the Burlington area near Notre Dame Secondary School?

Please contact Grand Knight David Fisher, [email protected], or via cell (905) 617-0366, if you are able to help out with this event. KNIGHT NEWS, Council 14446 September 2017 Page 15 | 25

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, Mary Mother of God – Program Update

MISSION The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a lay Catholic organization whose mission is to live the Gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice and joy.

VALUES The Mission of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul implies that as Vincentians we see Christ in anyone who suffers, come together as a family, have personal contact with the poor and help in all possible ways.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul continues to be very active serving families in need within our parish boundaries. Families include single mothers, recent immigrants unable to find work, families between jobs, or families forced to relocate due to economic distress. The majority live in government assisted housing, though currently, the demand for assisted housing is greater than the supply.

Over the past year, SSVP has seen some of its families be able to overcome or reduce the need for assistance, but on a net basis, there are now 8 more families receiving assistance than a year ago. Activities include:

· Monthly distribution of over 90 boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables to the families, in many cases, delivering them to the door as families are not in possession of a car. SSVP has augmented the vegetables by arranging for food donations from local supermarkets. · A specially trained on call team makes approximately 40 home visits in which they distribute food vouchers, bus passes, liaison with and sharing information about Halton resources. · Dental help from dentists providing services at no or reduced cost, is typically arranged for 2 families every month where coverage is not provided. We ensure all our families have applied for coverage to Healthy Smiles. · Used furniture donations from parishioners or local families is picked up and delivered on an as needed basis - usually 2-3 deliveries per month. · With most of the families being single mothers lacking appropriate tools, SSVP volunteers typically perform small “handyman” activities like hanging curtains, blinds, minor furniture repairs, for 2-3 families every month. · During the recent back to school event, 126 backpacks filled with school supplies were delivered to the children in need. · The Spring bike drive resulted in 32 gently used bikes being delivered to the families, for kids previously without bikes; helmets are purchased on an as needed basis. · Glen Oaks funeral home generously donates unopened food from large funerals, which are picked up and delivered to the most needy families on a rotating basis, but typically 3-4 times per month. · Spring and fall clothing drives are fairly major events as the parishioners support this opportunity to clean out their closets. Over less than 3 days, approximately 35 volunteers collect and sort clothes, shoes and coats, turning the church into a clothing boutique and then dismantling it all, and packing up the leftovers to be sent to support other agencies. · Christmas gift and dinner programs assure that our families are able to enjoy holiday periods that might otherwise generate added stress to parents with little or no cash resources · During the past year, we have added new services such as arranging for family children to attend local and overnight summer camps, enrolment into Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program (pay for needy kids to join sports or arts programs), and helping applicable families sign up for a Registered Disability Savings Plan (can qualify for up to $20,000 in government grants). · We continue to enroll new families in the Canada Learning Bond program in which RESPs are established in the child’s name so they can qualify for up to $2,000 in government funding toward post-secondary education.

The ministry continues to operate very efficiently - over 98% of funds raised go towards the families in need (everything is distributed on a non-cash basis), with only the minimum being used for administrative necessities. Funding comes entirely from the parish and will continue to be strained as long as government aid fails to keep pace with societal needs.

We are invited in to schools. We do not knock on the doors, and with the guidance of Our Blessed Mother, the doors are opening up to invite us in year after year. Our faith filled volunteers are our core strength, who devote one morning a month (or more if they can) to go in to schools, and additional time for monthly training and activities. The Rosary Apostolate meets all provincial guidelines in schools, with a 10-step volunteer screening and training program. The Apostolate provides all materials for classroom presentations (our "kits"), Rosaries for all students and staff, booklets, posters, and orchestrates a May Crowning Celebration, with costumes, props and gifts (miraculous medals, or posters etc.) at the end of the year. The program offers a thematic program each month, concentrating on a 5-minute presentation in our Catholic faith, and then we proceed to the Scriptural Rosary. This year, we provided booklets to guide the students through the Rosary, with a focus on Virtues (7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit, 12 Fruits, Beatitudes, etc.) The program is consistent across the province and is growing, with our prayers. We are in schools with our May Crowning Program, celebrating Our Lady of Fatima. Currently we have over 1200 Volunteers and pray the Rosary monthly with over 110,000 students in our Ontario Catholic Schools! 6 Halton Alive Charitable organization dedicated to promoting a culture of life in our community.
