i THE CUBAN BALLET: ITS RATIONALE, AESTHETICS AND ARTISTIC IDENTITY AS FORMULATED BY ALICIA ALONSO A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Lester Tomé January, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Joellen Meglin, Advisory Chair, Dance Karen Bond, Dance Michael Klein, Music Theory Heather Levi, External Member, Anthropology ii © Copyright 2011 by Lester Tomé All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT In the 1940s, Alicia Alonso became the first Latin American dancer to achieve international prominence in the field of ballet, until then dominated by Europeans. Promoted by Alonso, ballet took firm roots in Cuba in the following decades, particularly after the Cuban Revolution (1959). This dissertation integrates the methods of historical research, postcolonial critique and discourse analysis to explore the performative and discursive strategies through which Alonso defined her artistic identity and the collective identity of the Cuban ballet. The present study also examines the historical context of the development of ballet in Cuba, Alonso’s rationale for the practice of ballet on the Island, and the relationship between the Cuban ballet and the European ballet. Alonso defended the legitimacy of Cuban dancers to practice ballet and, in specific, perform European classics such as Giselle and Swan Lake. She opposed the notion that ballet was the exclusive patrimony of Europeans. She also insisted that the cultivation of this dance form on the Island was not an act of cultural colonialism. In her view, the development of ballet in Cuba consisted, instead, of an exploration of a distinctive Cuban voice within this dance form, a reformulation of a European legacy from a postcolonial perspective.

  • U.S. Author to Present Book on Father of Cuban Ballet
U.S. Author to Present Book on Father of Cuban Ballet Havana, February 5 (PL-RHC)-- U.S. writer Toba Singer has announced she will launch a book on the father of Cuban school of ballet, Fernando Alonso, on April 28th, at the San Francisco Public Library. Former first dancer of the Cuban National Ballet and the American Ballet Theater in the United States, Jose Manuel Carreño, will share with participants some of his experiences along with Alonso, one of the founders of ballet in Cuba. According to Singer, no place in the world has a so rigorous studio as that of Alonso, compared to the renowned schools of ballet in France, Italy, Denmark, Russia, and England, which he took as a basis to design his definitive methodology. Many teachers have a kind of sensibility, but there is no program to train hundreds of students and turn them into professional dancers, while training them as great teachers. According to the author, Alonso shaped many excellent dancers in several generations since he founded the academy in 1950 in collaboration with his then wife, Alicia Alonso, whose statements are included in the book. Azari Plizestki, Ramona de Saa, Menia Martinez, Jorge Esquivel, Aurora Bosch, Lazaro and Joel Carreño, Lorena and Lorna Feijoo, John White, Donald Saddler and Carlos Acosta, among others, also gave their views and personal stories about the master teacher. Singer's volume has been launched in Houston, New York, San Francisco and London. https://www.radiohc.cu/en/noticias/nacionales/45804-us-author-to-present-book-on-father-of-cuban-ballet Radio Habana Cuba.

  • Cuban Ballet. Octavio Roca. Layton UT: Gibbs Smith, 2010
210 Book Reviews Cuban Ballet. Octavio Roca. Layton UT: Gibbs Smith, 2010. 240 pp. (Cloth US$ 40.00) In 1981, Walter Terry published Alicia and her Ballet Nacional de Cuba, a valuable chronicle of the career of Alicia Alonso and the cultivation of bal- let in her country since the 1930s. Now Octavio Roca updates the literature in English about the Cuban ballet, revisiting its history and covering more recent developments. He addresses the flourishing of male dancing in Cuba in the last twenty-five years, which has produced international stars such as Carlos Acosta and José Carreño. He also writes extensively about the trans- national face of the Cuban ballet today. A plethora of dancers, like Acosta and Carreño, have left the island since the 1990s to headline troupes rang- ing from the Royal Ballet (London) to the American Ballet Theatre (New York). In particular, Roca highlights the success stories of the sisters Lorena and Lorna Feijóo, first-rank dancers of the San Francisco and Boston Bal- lets respectively. A Cuban exile himself, Roca relates these migration tales with patriotic pride, adopting the Cuban diaspora’s familiar self-narrative of triumphs and exceptionalism. Although the tone can be overtly celebra- tory, in stressing how the island’s dancers are major players in international ballet circuits, he contributes to a discussion of the global character of con- temporary ballet, showing how international commingling has become the norm in most ensembles, with Asians, Europeans, Latinos, and North Americans working together. Roca also documents how the migration of dancers from Cuba has helped turn Miami into a vibrant city for ballet.
