OpenO&M/MIMOSA and PCA Forum – Americas 2012 Houston, Texas – March 1, 2012 Interoperability Journey Robin Benjamins Corporate Engineering Board Member Participant Member Interoperability • Bechtel has been doing interoperability for over 110 years • How can that be? Interoperability: What is it? • Wikipedia: – “Interoperability is a property referring to the ability of diverse systems and organizations to work together (inter-operate). The term is often used in a technical systems engineering sense, or alternatively in a broad sense, taking into account social, political, and organizational factors that impact system to system performance.” Interoperability: What is it? • Robin’s definition: “To communicate” What are the aspects of Interoperability? • Who: Everyone • What: Information • How: Some kind of medium • When: As often as necessary • Why: To live long and prosper So what is the challenge with Interoperability? • Fact: Interoperability happens • Challenge: The cost of doing it – Too much ambiguity – Too many mistakes in interpreting – Subject matter is incomprehensible – There is a lot of confusion – Stakeholders have different motives – Conflicts of interest Information Management Value Model Design Design Information Catalog Asset Requirements/Specs Value for the EPC EPC Value for the OO Owner Catalog Supplier Asset Operator Information Information Value for the OO, Opportunity for the EPC Bechtel is an “Information Factory” • Information is the lifeblood of our operation • A significant influence on the success of our projects is dependent on how we handle, manage, and understand information and information Competency • A change in how we “do” information is where a significant opportunity lies that will improve our performance and delivered quality Introducing the Computer • Processing: – People are very smart but are also slow – Computers are very fast but are also dumb • Applications are controlled environments where the “smarts” are embedded and operated by the speed of computers – Productivity and quality improvement is gained • In our business, the greater portion of our information lies outside an application – This is where the opportunity lies Information Processing Smart People Application Information Computer Dump Slow Fast Computerization Potential The Opportunity Actual Automation Time Use of computers has resulted in performance and quality improvement but gains are not keeping pace with investment and expectations Information Competency • Do we know what Information Competency is? – Information principles – Best practices – An understanding of how it directly correlates to operating costs • Information Competency is not a technology thing • Information Competency is a new discipline that must be incorporated into the business Information Competency Example: • A valve identifier – Must uniquely identify a valve – When computer processing a traditional identifier, ambiguity can contribute to information loss Bad Practice 01-AB-V001A - Can be interpreted by people Best Practice E34X700GYEE10 - Cannot be interpreted by people Information Management Today V V IM tends to be an V implemented here V V V V V Procedures V E P C V Customer V Information Volume Information V IM is not V benefiting EPC V execution V V V Information Management V Information Flow Where we need to be Full EPC IM greatly reduces V V level of effort for V information handover and V positions us for LCIM V opportunity V V V Procedures V E P C V Customer V Information Volume Information V IM has a direct V benefit to EPC V execution V V V Information Management V Information Flow Information Discipline Organization Startup Finance Contracts Engineering Construction Procurement Project Controls Project Information Management IT Organization • An IM organization should be a horizontal organization under the functions with a prominent interface into the IT organization – IM is business driven not technology driven BIM – Building Information Modeling BIM – Cost optimization for lifecycle facility performance 3D, 4D, Lifecycle 5D, nD Work Facility Performance Processes Sustainability and Tools Work Process O&M Automation Automation Handover CAPEX OPEX Information Exchange Suppliers Information Lifecycle Model Review Management Cost Clash Detection Optimization Drawing Extraction The Problem Space Business Process 80% We tend to overemphasize this portion 20% Technology Plethora of Standards Engineering Procurement Construction Contracts Project Controls Startup Bechtel ISO 15926 “““Lingua Franca ””” EDI CIS/2 / IFC AEX XMpLant ISO 15926 Internet Steel Equipment Heater JV Bank Fabricator Manufacture Manufacture EPC The ISO 15926 Journey Unsatisfactory DataViewer interoperability Fiatech, PCA ProjectWorks Collaboration DataBroker ISO 15926 Part 7 iRINGTools Deploy 2012 2009 2005 1994 1999 Getting There Joined Worked with iRINGTools: collaboration our software Created iRINGToday organizations suppliers software Leverage Championed Camelot, Lead IIP lessons the WIP Avalon to Project learned concept JORD Interoperability is not an option Deployed Participated ISO 15926 Built a Part 7 in ISO Created hype TC184/SC4, prototype T25 Completed Grew inin-- Drove industry ISO 15926 house demonstrations Part 7 expertise Bechtel ’’’s DataBroker and the RDM Application 1 DataBroker Interface Application 2 Application 3 DataBroker DataBroker Interface Interface DataBroker DataBroker Exchange RDMRDM DataBroker Interface Scenarios Interface Application 4 Application 5 Information Ambiguity Greatest Least Ambiguity • Ambiguity between exchanging partners can Compliance require significant effort Full Templates (labor) to remove RDL for Integration • The higher the ambiguity, the higher the cost to use information Template Signatures RDL for ISO 15926 ISO Interoperability Ambiguity = Cost Least Dictionary RDL for Terminology Compliance Ambiguity Scale Ambiguity Raw Data Greatest Ambiguity Reference Data Federation Certification Requests ISO Federated Access PCA Global Sandbox Immutable Community Sandbox Read-Write Private Sandbox The iRING ISO 15926 EPC RDS/WIP Supplier EPC Job Site Supplier ISO 15926 Owner Operator Supplier ISO 15926 Realtime Interoperability Network Grid IIP Scope – Requirements Line SIG Equipment SP 3D Valve iRINGTools Map Instrument SIG SP 3D Specialty Line SIG RDL Equipment RDL SP P&ID RDL iRINGTools Valve Map Instrument SIG SP P&ID SIG SPI Instrument iRINGTools Map SPI Line Equipment SPF Valve iRINGTools Instrument Map SPF Specialty iRINGTools Overview APIs & Mashups Adaption Transformation Widgets Mobile Browser App App Data Simple direct data flow Data App iRINGTools iRINGTools App Complex indirect data flow API Adapter Adapter API DataLayer DataLayer iRINGTools iRINGTools iRINGTools Core Services Multi-Protocol Service •Endpoint management •Discovery •Mediation •Data flows RDL RDL •Orchestrations RDL •BI provisioning ISO ISO 15926 Specifications and Reference Data 3/19/2012 Information Management 27 API Framework Data Stores Projection & APIs Engines RDF NHibernate Part 8 Database Mapping Custom Part 7 DTO SQL P7XML Data Data Projection File Spreadsheet Layers Objects Engines XML Application Custom Library JSON [extensible] … HTML Data Projection p7xml dto rdf xml json html map Data Layer Data Source Consumer Public API Exchange Directory Endpoint Endpoint Endpoint Endpoint Endpoint JORD Deliverables Content development • Instrument SIG • Geometry SIG • EqHub • Proteus • ….
