STUDIES ON LEAD-ZINC MINERALIZATION IN KAREMPUDI AREA, GUNTUR DISTRICT, ANDHRA PRADESH BY K. KAMESWARA RAO AND C. MAHADEVAN, F.A.Sc. (Department cf Geology, Andhra University, Waltair) Received. July 29, 1960 ABSTRACT The geological formations near Karempudi area in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh (Lat. 16° 20' and 16° 26'; Long. 79° 38' 40" and 79° 45') consist of slaty shales of Cumbum, Irlakonda quartzites, Kolumnala slates and shales with intercalations of siliceous dolomitic limestones and Sree- sailam quartzites of Krishna Series, forming a perfect conformable sequence, all the formations striking N.E.-S.W. and dipping on average 25° S.E. The Srisailam quartzites are overlaid unconformably by Palnad limestones (Narjis) of Jammalamadugu stage of Kurnool Series with a constant dip of 8-12° in the same direction. The Krishna Series were subjected to local but intense structural dis- turbances resulting in an overfold. Subsequent to the overfolding, lead mineralization has taken place in dolomitic limestones. The lead-zinc minerals of Karempudi consist of Galena, Sphalerite, Jamesonite, Tetra- hedrite as primary minerals, and Anglesite as secondary mineral; there is association of chalcopyrite with Sphalerite. The textures are due to replacement and unmixing (?). The paragenetic sequence of the minerals is established to be sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, jamesonite, tetra- hedrite and anglesite. Correlation of field to laboratory studies revealed that the minerals are of hydrothermal (hypogene) origin. The structural and lithological favourability and controlling of the mineralisation are also explained. Anglesite owes its origin to the oxidation of galena due to air-water pro- cesses. The mineralization is surmised to have taken place in Pre-Palnads and Post-Krishna times.

Layers of loosely arranged particles of uniform size Objective of this study is to assess and map the spatial tend to hold more water than layers of rock with materials of distribution of groundwater quality in Guntur District different sizes. This is because smaller rock materials can Andhra Pradesh, using geographical information system relax in space between larger rocks, decreasing the space (GIS). • Application of Water Balance Technique in the Drought Analysis of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh
Pramana Research Journal ISSN NO: 2249-2976 Application of Water balance technique in the Drought analysis of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh Dr.N.Chandrayudu Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, S. V. University, Thirupathi (India) Email: [email protected] G S Srinivasa Gopinath Assistant Professor, VLITS, Dept.of BS& H, Vadlamudi 522213 India Email: [email protected] Abstract Water balance is one of the important techniques used in the studies of climatology, hydrology and agro climatology. It is helpful in the evaluation of various hydrological elements like water storage, water surplus and water deficit, which in turn provide quantitative solutions to many hydrological questions, in a given region (Hemamalini, 1993). Drought is weather related hazard and cannot be visualized like any other weather hazard. Moreover, accurate prediction is also not possible. However, water balance technique enables to carry out drought analysis. It is a perfect tool to identify the years of drought, their frequencies, and intensities. To understand the vulnerability of each mandal of the district to droughts, drought analysis has been carried out. Index of aridity (i.e. the ratio between water deficit and water need of the area) is the key parameter used to identify the drought incidences. The analysis shows that all the representative stations of the district are prone to droughts. From the study, it is inferred that Guntur district has been prone to droughts/famines from time immemorial. The incidence of droughts is on the increase which was indicated through the analysis of decennial frequency. The overall drought proneness in all the mandals was above 40 percent.

  • Chapter 2 Physical Features
Chapter 2 Physical Features 2.1 Geographical disposition Nagarjunasagar - Somasila link canal takes off from the existing Nagarjunasagar reservoir from its right flank earth dam and runs parallel to the NSRBC to its right side, till both the canals amalgamate into one at RD 202.75 km. Beyond this point upto its out-fall into Somasila reservoir, the canal generally runs in south direction. The canal passes through the mandals of Macherla, Durgi, Karampudi, Piduguralla, Nekarikallu, Ipuru and Bollapalli of Guntur district, Pullala Cheruvu, Tripurantakam, Donakonda, Kurichedu, Konakanamitla, Podili, Kanigiri, Veligandla and Pamuru of Prakasam district and Varikuntapadu, Udayagiri, Duttalur, Marripadu and Anantasagaram mandals of Nellore district. 2.2 Topography of the basins and command area The link project including its command area falls in the basins of the Krishna, Gundlakamma, the streams between Gundlakamma and Pennar, and Pennar. The topography of these basins is described briefly in the following sections: 2.2.1 Krishna basin The Krishna basin is bounded on the north by the common ridge separating it from Godavari basin, on the south and east by the Eastern Ghats and on the west by Western Ghats. Except for the hills forming the watershed round the basin, the entire drainage basin of the river comprises of rolling and undulating country and a series of ridges and valleys interspersed with low hill ranges. Large flat areas of the type seen in the Indo - Gangetic plains are scarce except in the deltas. The interior of the basin in its middle reaches is a plateau, the greater part of which is at an elevation of 300 to 600 m.
