Moths of Poole Harbour Species List
Moths of Poole Harbour is a project of Birds of Poole Harbour Moths of Poole Harbour Species List Birds of Poole Harbour & Moths of Poole Harbour recording area The Moths of Poole Harbour Project The ‘Moths of Poole Harbour’ project (MoPH) was established in 2017 to gain knowledge of moth species occurring in Poole Harbour, Dorset, their distribution, abundance and to some extent, their habitat requirements. The study area uses the same boundaries as the Birds of Poole Harbour (BoPH) project. Abigail Gibbs and Chris Thain, previous Wardens on Brownsea Island for Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), were invited by BoPH to undertake a study of moths in the Poole Harbour recording area. This is an area of some 175 square kilometres stretching from Corfe Castle in the south to Canford Heath in the north of the conurbation and west as far as Wareham. 4 moth traps were purchased for the project; 3 Mercury Vapour (MV) Robinson traps with 50m extension cables and one Actinic, Ultra-violet (UV) portable Heath trap running from a rechargeable battery. This was the capability that was deployed on most of the ensuing 327 nights of trapping. Locations were selected using a number of criteria: Habitat, accessibility, existing knowledge (previously well-recorded sites were generally not included), potential for repeat visits, site security and potential for public engagement. Field work commenced from late July 2017 and continued until October. Generally, in the years 2018 – 2020 trapping field work began in March/ April and ran on until late October or early November, stopping at the first frost. -

G. M. Bond1 and J. P. O’Connor2 1Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology, School of BEES, University College Cork, Distillery Fields, North Mall, Cork, Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 2Emeritus Entomologist, National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

Butterfly and Moth Recording Report 2011
Lancashire, Manchester and Merseyside Butterfly and Moth Recording Report 2011 Laura Sivell Graham Jones Stephen Palmer 1 Butterfly Recording Laura Sivell County Butterfly Recorder Record Format More recorders who have computers chose to send their records by email. This is certainly preferred for ease of data input. The new version of Levana now has an excellent import facility, that can convert pages of records in a few seconds. MS Excel, MS Works, or tables in MS Word or tab-text are all acceptable file types. It not only makes my life much easier, it is a joy to use! Please remember to include your name in the file name of your records. On days where several different recorders send a file called ‘butterfly records 11’, it’s chaos! It also helps if you include a header with your name on so that your printed records can be easily attributed to you. Woefully few people have taken this on board. Thanks to those that have, it takes so little to bring joy and relief to this poor recorder. Any recorders with computers but not currently sending their records electronically, please consider doing so. Even if you don’t have email, records can be sent on disc. South-Central England Regional Action Plan
Butterfly Conservation South-Central England Regional Action Plan This action plan was produced in response to the Action for Butterflies project funded by WWF, EN, SNH and CCW by Dr Andy Barker, Mike Fuller & Bill Shreeves August 2000 Registered Office of Butterfly Conservation: Manor Yard, East Lulworth, Wareham, Dorset, BH20 5QP. Registered in England No. 2206468 Registered Charity No. 254937. Executive Summary This document sets out the 'Action Plan' for butterflies, moths and their habitats in South- Central England (Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight & Wiltshire), for the period 2000- 2010. It has been produced by the three Branches of Butterfly Conservation within the region, in consultation with various other governmental and non-governmental organisations. Some of the aims and objectives will undoubtedly be achieved during this period, but some of the more fundamental challenges may well take much longer, and will probably continue for several decades. The main conservation priorities identified for the region are as follows: a) Species Protection ! To arrest the decline of all butterfly and moth species in South-Central region, with special emphasis on the 15 high priority and 6 medium priority butterfly species and the 37 high priority and 96 medium priority macro-moths. ! To seek opportunities to extend breeding areas, and connectivity of breeding areas, of high and medium priority butterflies and moths. b) Surveys, Monitoring & Research ! To undertake ecological research on those species for which existing knowledge is inadequate. Aim to publish findings of research. ! To continue the high level of butterfly transect monitoring, and to develop a programme of survey work and monitoring for the high and medium priority moths. -

Now the field season is upon us, although the recent weather hasn’t been very conducive to moth recording. This issue brings news of notable sightings already this year, as well as some micro-moth highlights from 2011, and more besides. At the end you’ll find details of forthcoming field meetings – hope to see you at some of these. I would also just like to thank all those whole responded to the appeal in the last newsletter re the Dewhurst collection. In the end, Charles Dewhurst has decided to return the collection to the custodianship of his own family. Happy mothing! Richard Fox Early spring records of over-wintering adult immigrant moths. A warm spell of weather at the end of February and beginning of March following a mild winter has resulted in some very interesting records. Let’s hope the trend continues throughout the rest of 2012. I set up my garden trap on 24 th February and when I examined the catch the following morning I was amazed to see Conistra erythrocephala Red-headed Chestnut. This is a rare immigrant and only the third Devon record. Previous records were at Ivybridge (5.11.1856) and Shaugh Prior (12.2.2004). -
Wales Moth List 2019
Wales Moth List (Provisional) A list of all the moth species known to have been recorded in Wales, including species that have been recorded rarely or once only, and which may not have resident breeding populations in Wales. Includes records that may be historic only and species that are now thought to be extinct in Wales (e.g. Conformist). Compiled by Butterfly Conservation Wales using lists supplied by County Moth Recorders. Complete with records up to and including 2019 (2019 new records marked as such). Covers the 13 Welsh vice-counties: Monmouthshire (VC35), Glamorgan (VC41), Breconshire (VC42), Radnorshire (VC43), Carmarthenshire (VC44), Pembrokeshire (VC45), Cardiganshire (VC46), Montgomeryshire (VC47), Merionethshire (VC48), Caernarvonshire (VC49), Denbighshire (VC50), Flintshire (VC51) & Anglesey (VC52). U = Unsupported. These are moth records which are not supported by a full record and hence may be missing from the county datasets, despite being present on MBGBI maps. List order follows Agassiz, Beavan and Heckford (ABH) Checklist of the Lepidoptera of the British Isles (2013) and including recent changes to the list. Bradley & Fletcher (B&F) numbers are also provided. Names are based on the ABH chcklist; for the micro-moths some additional English names in regular use are also included.
