  • Russian Men Dominate Day One in Calgary
February 7, 2020 Calgary, Canada Russian men dominate day one in Calgary Russia’s men have fired a warning message to their rivals ahead of next week’s world championships in Salt Lake City with a dominant display on day one of the fifth leg of the ISU World Cup in Calgary. Ruslan Murashov, Pavel Kulizhnikov and Viktor Mushtakov swept the podium in the opening 500m with the smallest possible margin between them, while teammate Denis Yuskov went on to triumph in the 1500m. In the ladies' tournament Nao Kodaira (JPN) took her first 1000m World Cup gold of the season in a season's-best time of 1:12.65 and 3000m winner Martina Sáblíková (CZE) is also looking in great shape as the season's climax approaches. Men's 500m: Russian 1-2-3 Kulizhnikov was the first of the Russians to take on the fast, high-altitude ice at the 1988 Olympic Oval in the second pair. The world-record holder, who returned to action in December after missing the first three World Cup events of the season, took on PyeongChang 2018 Olympic champion Håvard Lorentzen (NOR). Kulizhnikov left Lorentzen behind Quickly to finish just 0.05 seconds short of his own track record in 34.05. His Norwegian opponent, who has been struggling for form this season, clocked 34.61 to end up 15th. World Cup overall leader Mushtakov skated versus third-ranked Tatsuya Shinhama (JPN) in the eighth pairing. The Russian had the fastest opener of the field in 9.41, but could not match Kulizhnikov's 24.43 full lap and finished 0.01 short of his compatriot.

Ted-Jan Bloemen (CAN) smashed the 5000m mark set by Sven Kramer (NED) 10 years ago, while Nao Kodaira (JPN) skated Brittany Bowe’s 2015 Salt Lake City 1000m world record into the history books. Natalia Voronina (RUS) won the Ladies 3000m and Denis Yuskov (RUS) added 1000m gold to his 1500m world record on Saturday. The weekend’s first world record was skated by the Japanese ladies in Friday’s Team Pursuit. Bloemen (CAN) sets epic world record Ted-Jan Bloemen (CAN) wrapped up the Salt Lake City World Cup with a superb world record in the Men’s 5000m. The Canadian blew away the previous best of 6 minutes, 3.32 seconds, set by Sven Kramer (NED) in Calgary 10 years ago, as he finished strongly in 6:01.86. After having lost three times in head-to-head World Cup races this season, Bloemen did not have to race Kramer in person on Sunday. The world record holder was back in Europe preparing for the Dutch national trials.

They broke their own world record to add another gold to their impressive tally. Heather Bergsma (USA) claimed her first World Cup gold this season in the Ladies 1000m, Kai Verbij (NED) did the same in the Men’s 1000m and the Dutch men took home the men’s Team Pursuit gold on day 2 of the ISU World Cup Speed Skating in Calgary. World record for Japan In the ladies’ Team Pursuit Japan (Miho Takagi, Nana Takagi and Ayaka Kikuchi) faced the Netherlands (Antoinette de Jong, Marrit Leenstra and Lotte van Beek) in the final pairing. Both teams were on pace to break the world record (2:55.77) that Nana Takagi, Miho Takagi and Ayano Sato had set three weeks ago in Heerenveen. Japan kept the Dutch ladies at bay, heading into the final 200m with a 1.29 second advantage. But misfortune struck for the Netherlands when Van Beek crashed on her way to the finish line and Japan crossed first in 2:53.88. Not perfect yet The Japanese ladies have won the Team Pursuit World Cup title for the past two years but they have stepped up their game again this season.

Miho Takagi (JPN) and Nao Kodaira (JPN) extended their winning streaks in the 1500m and the 500m respectively, while Ruslan Murashov (RUS) became the second fastest man ever in the 500m. Francesca Lollobrigida (ITA) and Lee Seung-Hoon (KOR) won the Mass Start events. Yuskov (RUS) breaks world record in 1500m After falling agonizingly short a week ago, Denis Yuskov (RUS) lived up to expectations and wrote his name in the history books when he skated 1 minute and 41.02 seconds in the 1500m in Salt Lake City to take gold and shave 0.02 seconds off the world record. “I knew I had a chance. It was do or die,” Yuskov said after his heroics at the Utah Olympic Oval. The 28-year-old Russian got close to the world record when he won last week’s 1500m in Calgary in 1:41.33. The difference on Saturday was made in the first and second full laps. “I wanted to skate the first 300m faster, but I did not manage to.
