PRESS STATEMENT For Immediate Release Official Visit of Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Mr Chung Sye-Kyun to Singapore from 19 to 21 March 2017 Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea is making an official visit to Singapore from 19 to 21 March 2017 at the invitation of Speaker of Singapore Parliament Halimah Yacob. He is accompanied by a delegation of parliamentarians, officials and businessmen. Mr Chung made a courtesy call on Speaker Halimah at Parliament House this morning, where they reaffirmed the warm inter-parliamentary relations between Singapore and South Korea. He also met with Members of Parliament, Mr Liang Eng Hwa, Mr Alex Yam, Miss Cheryl Chan and Mr Darryl David. As part of the official programme, Mr Chung will also be calling on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong at the Istana. Singapore 2017 International Religious Freedom Report
SINGAPORE 2017 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution, laws, and policies provide for religious freedom, subject to restrictions relating to public order, public health, and morality. The government continued to ban Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (Unification Church). The government restricted speech or actions it perceived as detrimental to “religious harmony.” There is no legal provision for conscientious objection, including on religious grounds, and Jehovah’s Witnesses reported 12 conscientious objectors remained detained at year’s end. In April an Indian imam who uttered an Arabic prayer during which he asked for “help against Jews and Christians” was fined and deported for acts “prejudicial to the maintenance of religious harmony and likely to disturb public tranquility.” Three foreign Islamic preachers were banned from entering the country in October and November, and two foreign Christian speakers were banned from preaching in September because the government reportedly viewed their teaching as damaging to social harmony. The government changed a voluntary program into a mandatory requirement that all Muslim religious teachers and centers of learning register with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS). Parliament discussed the existing prohibition on wearing the hijab for certain civil servants, but the prohibition remained. In September former Parliamentary Speaker Halimah Yacob, who wears the hijab, became president. The post was reserved in this presidential cycle for eligible Malays, who are mostly Muslim. The government made multiple high-level affirmations of the importance of religious harmony, launched an initiative to foster understanding of different religious practices, and created a fund and documentary to explore religious differences and prejudices.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Reopens!
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Reopens! On 22 October 2016, the National Parks Board (NParks) reopened Bukit Timah Nature Reserve following the completion of two years of restoration works and sensitive enhancements to the site. The Reserve was closed from September 2014 to October 2016 to allow NParks to repair and enhance the slopes and trails for public safety, upgrade the Visitor Centre, restore the forest habitat, and conduct a two-year biodiversity survey for the area. Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance Mr Lawrence Wong, together with the Advisers of Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, planted two Endocomia canarioides trees at the site to mark the reopening of the Reserve. Sections of three slopes along the Main Road trail, which had weakened in recent years, were repaired to ensure slope stability and public safety.

MEDIA RELEASE SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT MADAM HALIMAH YACOB MEETS MEXICAN COUNTERPART Speaker of Parliament Madam Halimah Yacob, who is currently on an official visit to Mexico, called on the President of Mexico's Senate of the Republic (or Upper House) Mr Pablo Escudero Morales on 26 April, Wednesday. They had a fruitful discussion on developments in Mexico and Singapore, re-affirmed both countries' interests in promoting free trade and exchanged views on enhancing parliamentary relations. Madam Halimah was accompanied by Singapore Members of Parliament Mr Vikram Nair, Mr Ang Wei Neng and Miss Cheryl Chan. 2 After the Call, Madam Halimah delivered a message during a session of the Senate in Mexico City. In her message, she called for the renewing of relations and strengthening of cooperation even as some countries are turning protectionist. 3 Besides the meetings at the Senate, Madam Halimah and her delegation also called on the President of Mexico's Chamber of Deputies (or Lower House) Ms Maria Guadalupe Murguia Gutierrez. They took their oaths during a virtual ceremony, with Presiding Judge of the State Courts, Justice Vincent Hoong, in attendance. The JPs were appointed for a term of five years commencing 1 September 2020, with 43 newly appointed while 21 were re-appointed for their second or third term. With the new appointments and re-appointments (as well as the retirement of 46 JPs previously in service), the total number of JPs is now 173.
