  • A Free and Independent Press Has Become One of the Hallmarks of a Healthy Democracy
PROVINCIAL UNITY AMIDST A DIMINISHING PRESS GALLERY by LESLIE DE MEULLES 2009-2010 INTERN THE ONTARIO LEGISLATURE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (OLIP) 1303A WHITNEY BLOCK QUEEN'S PARK TORONTO, ONTARIO M7A 1A1 EMAIL: [email protected] PAPER PRESENTED AT THE 2010 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CANADIAN POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION, MONTREAL,QUÉBEC, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2nd, 2010. A free and independent press has become one of the hallmarks of a healthy democracy. Press galleries and bureaus have similarly become a cornerstone of the democratic process insofar as they independently report on, and keep politicians accountable. However, the Ontario Legislature Press Gallery membership has been declining over the past 20 years. This decline may very well be an indicator that this „valued‟ democratic institution is in dire straits. This paper attempts to explain why the Press Gallery is shrinking and how decreasing number have led to a lack of political coverage to Northern Ontario, and is leading Northern constituents to rely heavily on their MPPs as a source of political news. This is problematic, as MPP communication can hardly be expected to be non-partisan, objective reporting on the events at Queen‟s Park. That people in Northern Ontario rely on partisan political messaging as a substitute for political news shows how the media as an institution is failing the North, as relying on these forms of communication is akin to relying on propaganda. Due to a dearth of literature on the Ontario Legislature, the research for this paper relied on interviews conducted with Northern MPPs, and current and former Press Gallery members1. The paper exists in three parts.

  • The Absence of Public Service Values in Canadian Media Discourse About the CBC
The Sound of Silence: The Absence of Public Service Values in Canadian Media Discourse about the CBC Brooks DeCillia 1 London School of Economics Patrick McCurdy University of Ottawa ABstrACt Public service broadcasting (PSB) across the world is in crisis. This article ex - amines how, if at all, normative academic ideals of public service broadcasting inform dis - cussion about the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Canadian news media. The researchers undertook a quantitative (N = 467) and qualitative (n = 29) content analysis of five years of Canadian news media coverage about the CBC published between January 1, 2009, and April 30, 2014. Their systematic analysis of this research found little connection was made between the CBC and discussions of public service values. This study contends that the pre-eminence of neoliberal discourse represents a serious assault to broadcasters with a public service ethos.

  • Original and Microfilmed Newspaper Collections in the Archives of Ontario Most Recent Update: L 23 Customer Service Guide December 2003
Archives of Ontario Original and Microfilmed Newspaper Collections in the Archives of Ontario Most Recent Update: L 23 Customer Service Guide December 2003 Introduction This finding aid (L 23) contains a complete inventory of original newspaper holdings of the Archives of Ontario for newspapers published in the province of Ontario and its predecessors, Upper Canada and Canada West, which are not on microfilm. The finding aid also includes an inventory of the Archives holdings for all newspapers on microfilm, regardless of place of publication. The microfilm series for these newspapers are prefixed by an "N" code. Please consult the newspaper card catalogue in the Main Reading Room for detailed descriptions of individual reel contents of newspapers on microfilm, and for the reel numbers of mastheads listed here. Historical introductions and tables of contents for the newspapers on microfilm are filed by "N" number in Appendices "A" to "C" of the Newspapers Collection Inventory. Column eight in Appendices A4 and A5 indicates whether an introduction is available () or not (X) for newspapers under a specific "N" number. These introductions are usually on the first reel of each microfilm series. Original Newspapers are listed alphabetically by masthead (Appendix A1), then by place (Appendix A2), with the exception of Toronto, which is catalogued separately (Appendix A3). Newspapers on Microfilm are listed sequentially by the "N" catalogue number for the film series (Appendix A4), then by place of publication, followed by masthead and date range order (Appendix A5). NB: the definite article “The” has been omitted from the Masthead listings and the community’s name has usually been deleted, if it is the same as the one in the "Place of Publication" column.
