In the movie, scientist research on how thought impacts the appearance of water molecules is shown. In effect, study participants think positive, negative, or certain other scripted thoughts. While this is occurring, researchers take pictures of nearby water molecules through a powerful microscope. The information is very incredible and visually compelling. The results have been reproduced by other experiments, but they still remain controversial. What has put scientist at the forefront of the study of water is his proof that thoughts and feelings affect physical reality. -

Chapter 3 Mindfulness and the Buddha’s Noble Eightfold Path Malcolm Huxter 3.1 Introduction In the late 1970s, Kabat-Zinn, an immunologist, was on a Buddhist meditation retreat practicing mindfulness meditation. Inspired by the personal benefits, he de- veloped a strong intention to share these skills with those who would not normally attend retreats or wish to practice meditation. Kabat-Zinn developed and began con- ducting mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in 1979. He defined mindful- ness as, “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment to moment” (Kabat-Zinn 2003, p. 145). Since the establishment of MBSR, thousands of individuals have reduced psychological and physical suffering by attending these programs (see www.unmassmed.edu/cfm/mbsr/). Furthermore, the research into and popularity of mindfulness and mindfulness-based programs in medical and psychological settings has grown exponentially (Kabat-Zinn 2009). Kabat-Zinn (1990) deliberately detached the language and practice of mind- fulness from its Buddhist origins so that it would be more readily acceptable in Western health settings (Kabat-Zinn 1990). Despite a lack of consensus about the finer details (Singh et al. 2008), Kabat-Zinn’s operational definition of mindfulness remains possibly the most referred to in the field. Dozens of empirically validated mindfulness-based programs have emerged in the past three decades. However, the most acknowledged approaches include: MBSR (Kabat-Zinn 1990), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT; Linehan 1993), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT; Hayes et al. 1999), and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT; Segal et al. -

Chapter II DEFINITION of the TERM SATI and SAMMĀSATI
Chapter II DEFINITION OF THE TERM SATI AND SAMMĀSATI The word “Sati” has been used in Buddhist psychology in the sense of “mindfulness" for over 2500 years. Sati is the most important for cultivation of mind, and Vipassanā (insight meditation). There are different ways to explain the term Sati, it may be so useful to take a fresh look at mindfulness to clarify its meaning. The approach in this chapter is to seek the nature of mindfulness by studying the Suttas in which the Buddha and his students have used the term. In these Suttas we find a number of themes associated with mindfulness. It consists of the concept of the word Sati and also of the word Sammāsati, which is used to give the sense of correct (right) mindfulness. The definition and the meaning of Sati and Sammāsati, the types of the Sammāsati and different functions of Sati are also discussed in this chapter. Now we should go in detail in order to understand the Term Sammāsati clearly. II.1. Concept of Sati (mindfulness) The psychological concept of mindfulness involves the non- judgmental acceptance of thoughts, feelings and body sensations. 16 Mindfulness and a practicing of mindfulness can also decrease negative thoughts that intrude upon a leader‟s mind.8 The research has shown that Sati (mindfulness) leads to a better quality of life through feeling better and having less emotional distress. Sati plays a central role in the teachings of Buddhist meditation where it is affirmed that "correct" or "right" mindfulness is the critical factor in the path to liberation and subsequent enlightenment. -

22 Indriya DEFINITION: Indriya: Literally, ―Belonging to Indra‖, a Chief Deity
Abhidharmakosa Chapter 2: Indriyas (Faculties) Overview: Chapter 2 continues the analysis of Chapter 1 in laying out the basic underlying principles of the Abhidharma approach. Chapter 2 begins with an exposition of the indriyas which continues the treatment of traditional teaching categories from Chapter 1 (which analyzed skandhas, ayatanas and dhatus). After the analysis of the indriyas (see below for summary and table), Vasubandhu lays out the dharmas associated and not associated with mind along the lines of the less traditional Panca-vastuka (five groups) formulation (this was an later Abhidharma development). To some extent, Chapter 1 covered the rupa (material form) group of dharmas, as well as the mind/consciousness (citta/vijnana) group (just 1 dharma). The unconditioned dharmas are treated in both chapter 1 and 2. Chapter 2 then unfolds the mental dharmas and the dharmas not associated with mind (which comprise the 4th skandha: samskaras). By treating the indriyas first, Vasubandhu may be trying to give a more sutra-based foundation to the exposition of the samskaras before unfolding the later Panca-vastuka formulation. After the analysis of the indriyas below, there is a study of the 75 dharmas (and some thoughts on the development of ―dharma lists‖. As the dharmas are not things, but functions or causal forces, Vasubandhu follows up the exposition of the dharmas with a treatment of causality (K48-73, see overview below). 22 Indriya DEFINITION: Indriya: literally, ―belonging to Indra‖, a chief deity. Indriya comes to connote supremacy, dominance, control, power and strength. Soothill‘s definition of the Chinese: ―根 mūla, a root, basis, origin; but when meaning an organ of sense, indriyam, a 'power', 'faculty of sense, sense, organ of sense'. -

Loka Nat is the only Mahayana Deity left in this Theravada country that Myanmar displays his image openly, not knowing that he is the Mahayana Deity appearing everywhere in the world in a variety of names: Avalokitesvara, Lokesvara, Kuan Yin, Kuan Shih Yin and Kannon. The younger generations got lost in the translation not knowing the name Loka Nat means one and the same for this Bodhisatta known in various part of the world as Avalokitesvara, Lokesvara, Kuan Yin or Kannon. He is believed to guard over the world in the period between the Gotama Sasana and Mettreyya Buddha sasana. Based on Kyaikhtiyoe Cetiya’s inscription, some believed that Loka Nat would bring peace and prosperity to the Goldenland of Myanmar. Its historical origin has been lost due to artistic creativity Myanmar artist. The Myanmar historical record shows that the King Anawratha was known to embrace the worship of Avalokitesvara, Loka Nat. Even after the introduction of Theravada in Bagan, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Lokanattha, Loka Byuhar Nat, Kuan Yin, and Chenresig, had been and still is the most revered Mahayana deity, today. -

Bodiford, Chair The focus of this dissertation is Myōan Eisai, considered by scholarship as the founder of the Rinzai Zen lineage in Japan. This work aims to answer two interrelated questions: what is Eisai's Zen? and how does Eisai's Zen relate to other schools of Buddhism? Through an analysis of Eisai's texts composed following his return from his second trip to China in 1187, I illustrate the link between Eisai's understanding of Zen and the practice of morality im Buddhism; moreover this dissertation shows clearly that, for Eisai, Zen is compatible with both Tendai and the study of the precepts. This work analyzes the Eisai's use of doctrinal debates found in Chinese sources to argue for the introduction of Zen to Japan. Through this analysis, we see how Eisai views ii Zen, based on his experience in Chinese monasteries, not as a distinct group of practitioners rebelling against traditional forms of practice, but rather as a return to fundamental Buddhist positions concerning the importance of morality and its relationship to meditative practices. -

THE TEACHING OF BUDDHA WHEEL OF DHARMA The Wheel of Dharma is the translation of the Sanskrit word, “Dharmacakra.” Similar to the wheel of a cart that keeps revolving, it symbolizes the Buddha’s teaching as it continues to be spread widely and endlessly. The eight spokes of the wheel represent the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism, the most important Way of Practice. The Noble Eightfold Path refers to right view, right thought, right speech, right behavior, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right meditation. In the olden days before statues and other images of the Buddha were made, this Wheel of Dharma served as the object of worship. Faithful Devotees, the Teaching (sāsana) of the Buddha, the Blessed one, the Arahant, and perfectly Self-enlightened one is the only way that leads (ekāyana- lit. one goingway) to the four paths & fruits and nibbāna. This way leading to the four paths & fruits and nibbāna contains the thirty-seven dhammas that lead to enlightenment.
