St. Catherine Church, Kapaa St. William Church, Hanalei Aloha! “The people of Hawaii are one ohana.” Mark Whitson (flashing the shaka) and his volunteer crew at the Hawaii Foodbank - Kauai Branch receiving That’s the first sentence in our mission statement. food. Like the Hawaii Foodbank, St. Catherine’s Church Food Pantry in Kapaa provides food so that no one in our ohana goes hungry. They are a three-church parish, with two on the North Shore: St. Sylvester Church in Kilauea and St. William Church in Hanalei. St. Catherine’s Food Pantry started in February 2010, a year after St. William. The pantry has grown from helping 10 to 20 people a week to a record high of 428 clients the week of October 26, 2011. The food pantry usually gets three to four truckloads of food a week. The pantry staff and volunteers distribute 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of food to our recipients, many of whom are homeless, elderly, unemployed or are low-income families with children. The Hawaii Foodbank - Kauai Branch has supported the pantry by delivering food to the staff when transportation was unavailable to them. St. Catherine’s depends on the Hawaii Foodbank – Kauai Branch to supply their food distributions. They tell us, “Michelle and Wes have always been there in our time of need.” The food we distributed enabled their pantry to grow and serve an average of 350 people a week. They now deliver food to five beaches in Kapaa and also distribute food from the pantry on scheduled days or on an emergency basis depending on the need. Their sister parish, St. Williams, serves an additional 100 to 150 clients a week. Collectively, the two parishes served over 16,000 clients this year. Mark Whitson, Operations Manager at St. Catherine’s Food Pantry shared that they have come to know quite a few of the recipients by name and learned what foods they like or need. The Hawaii Foodbank - Kauai Branch has been very supportive of requests for diapers, food boxes, canned meats, dairy products or fresh produce. The clients are satisfied with the selection, quality and nutritional value of the food they receive. Mark added, “The Hawaii Foodbank has also facilitated Safe Food Handling classes for our volunteers and provided networking opportunities with other food pantries to learn ‘best practices’ as we continue our mission to feed the hungry in Kauai.” He expressed his gratitude by saying, “The staff and volunteers at St. Catherine’s Parish want to express our appreciation for the work and support of the Hawaii Foodbank - Kauai Branch. Your food distribution is an essential part of our community outreach program. Our volunteers tell us that this ministry is one of the most rewarding things they have ever done.”
