ELI H. NEWBERGER ARCHETYPES AND ANTECEDENTS OF PIANO BLUES AND BOOGIE WOOGIE STYLE Jazz is essentially an improvised music; it is simultaneously composed and performed. "Style" in jazz implies qualities of both composition and performance. "Idiom," "structure," "phrasing," and "tech- nique" are aspects of style, and a study of various jazz styles contrasts musical " personalities" in the fullest sense. The jazz piano is as old as jazz, and there have been as many jazz piano styles as there have been jazz pianists. Some , however , seem to show particular originality and imagination, and their work has been of influence. The piano blues stylists to whom one can look as archetypes for the piano blues and boogie-woogie school share these attributes. In general, the performers represented here exhibit an impressive technical command of the piano. This is not a prime requisite for the effective use of the instrument in jazz , however. For that reason , Cripple Clarence Lofton is present, while, for instance, Jose Iturbi is not. To capture a sense of style, and to demonstrate the characteristic features of this school of jazz pianism , each of the artists discussed in this article is represented by a typical 12-bar blues improvisation. Principal conceptual and methodologic issues pertaining to the tran- scription and notation of these choruses are reviewed in a previous study. 1 As did ragtime, piano blues and boogie-woogie derived from many sources. But where ragtime shows in its notated music and its mannered style the manifest influence of nineteenth century European and Ameri- Eli H. Rag Alley Blues By Rudi Blesh Last January my friend Jimmy Ernst wrote to Montana Taylor to inquire about the lost years (1928 to 1946) in the life of the great barrel house pianist, years in which his whereabouts and his fate were an unsolved mystery of the jazz world. Montana replied as follows Dear Mr. Ernst: Received your letter, was more than glad to hear from you. In my small way I am going to try and explain myself and my feelings to you, about "piano playing," and what I have done in the seventeen years I have not played. Started playing at the age of eighteen at and around Chicago and Indianapolis, for rent parties Played at Goosie Lees 'Rock House in Indianapolis for two dollars a night. Enjoyed it very much. I made my first recording in 1928 in Chicago, for the company Vocalion. It was "Detroit Rocks' and also "Montana Blues." Think I received a pretty rotten deal as I never got any royalties; me not knowing much about the recording business I did not get my just deserts. I became very discouraged and refused to play any more. In 1936 I came to Cleveland, just knocked about doing nothing. In the years 1942 and 1943, certain magazines carried my name and the names of my recordings. Charlie Cow Cow Davenport had seen them and located me to give me the information. He told me about Rudi Blesh and how he wanted the original Barrel House Blues. In March, 1946, Cow Cow Davenport went, with myself, to Chicago and made a few more recordings. -

Mr. Setzer is a tenured Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at Stony Brook University and has given master classes at schools around the world. He has been a regular faculty member of the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshops at Carnegie Hall and the Jerusalem Music Center. His article about those workshops appeared in The New York Times on the occasion of violinist Isaac Stern’s 80th birthday celebration in 2001. Mr. Setzer is from Cleveland. He began studying the violin at age five with his parents, both former violinists of the Cleveland Orchestra. Later he studied with Josef Gingold and Rafael Druian. At The Juilliard School he studied with Oscar Shumsky, and also studied chamber music with Robert Mann and Felix Galimir. -
