Ledding Library News Ledding Library News VOLUME 18, ISSUE 5 M A Y 2 0 1 7 Milwaukie: A Community of Growers In 1900, Milwaukie had a thriving farming economy. Even though Milwaukie no longer has an economy based primarily on farming, it does have a strong community of gardeners who cultivate fruits, vegetables, legumes, and ornamental plants. This May, Milwaukie's history and love for making things grow can be celebrated, tasted, and enjoyed in so many ways. The Farmers Market begins its season on Sunday, May 7. On Saturday, May 13, plant sales will be hosted throughout the city to raise money for local non-profits and for the Library. Gardening classes by OSU master gardeners are already in full swing at the Library. Also, for the first time, the Library will be presenting a seed swap on Saturday, May 27. Travail de maturité – ANGLAIS Sujet no 13 Family in Films “All happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Anna Karenina, Leon Tolstoy. Whether dysfunctional, separated by exile, torn apart by history, laden with secrecy, crazy, loving, caring, smothering - and even perhaps happy, family is an endless source of investigation about human relations and social groups. Being a Non-Entity with Soon-Yi Previn Carl Hugmeyer Sometimes I realize that I’m not really putting myself out there. Being pleasant and considerate towards those around you is important, but part of me still thinks there should be something else going on. I find it hard to track down my contributions, my expressions, my statements. Partially read New Yorkers pile up and Netflix still recommends more documentaries than sitcoms. There is kale in the refrigerator, yes, and a $23 bottle of wine. Great. But is this supposed to be a model of beautiful living, to show to those who scream at their children, slapping them and then tugging at their arms as they wait for the tank to fill up at the gas station? To those who throw their Burger King wrappers out of the car window? It is dust accumulating, nothing, a mouse in the walls of the world that no one really sees or cares about except when it gets audibly worked up or so thoroughly stuck that a smell begins to emanate.

  • Acting Without Bullshit
Journal of Liberal Arts and Humanities (JLAH) Issue: Vol. 1; No. 3 March 2020 (pp. 7-15) ISSN 2690-070X (Print) 2690-0718 (Online) Website: www.jlahnet.com E-mail: [email protected] Acting without Bullshit Dr. Rodney Whatley 2190 White Pines Drive Pensacola, FL 32526 Abstract This article is a guide to honest acting. Included is a discussion that identifies dishonest acting and the actor training that results in it. A definition of what truth onstage consists of is contrasted with a description of impractical acting exercises that should be avoided. The consequences of acting with bullshit are revealed. The article concludes with a description of the most practical and honest acting exercise. If you are a performance artist who loves shows with no dialogue, characters without names, or an unconnected series of events in lieu of plot, this essay isn’t for you. If you are an artist who communicates with sounds instead of words, this isn’t for you. However, if you like plots with specific characters pursuing superobjectives despite conflict, that explores the human condition, this essay is for you. This is a guide to practical, straightforward and honest acting. The actor must be honest in the relationship with the audience because you can’t shit a shitter, so don’t try. How can actors be honest onstage when acting is lying? By studying with good acting teachers who teach good acting classes, and aye, there’s the rub. Bad acting teachers train actors to get lost within their own reality, to surround themselves with the “magic” of acting and “become the character.” This teaches that the goal of acting is to convince the audience that the actor is the character.

  • Quiet and Melancholy. This MUSIC Plays Over All of the Opening Scenes
We begin with MUSIC -- quiet and melancholy. This MUSIC plays over all of the opening scenes: EXTREME CLOSE UP The silent, slo-mo image of a Miss America being crowned. She cries and hugs the runners-up as she has the tiara pinned on her head. Then -- carrying her bouquet -- she strolls down the runway, waving and blowing kisses. INT. REC ROOM - DAY A six year old girl sits watching the show intently. This is OLIVE. She is big for her age and slightly plump. She has frizzy brown hair and wears black-rimmed glasses. She studies the show very earnestly. Then, using a remote, she FREEZES the image. Absently, she holds up one hand and mimics the waving style of the Miss America. She REWINDS the tape, and starts all over again. Again, Miss America hears her name announced, and once again breaks down in tears -- overwhelmed and triumphant. RICHARD (V.O.) There’s two kinds of people in this world: Winners...and Losers. INT. CLASSROOM - DAY RICHARD (45) stands in front of a white-board in a community college classroom. He wears khaki shorts, a golf shirt, sneakers. His peppy, upbeat demeanor just barely masks a seething sense of insecurity and frustration. There are eleven students in a room that could easily fit fifty. RICHARD If there’s one thing you take away from the nine weeks we’ve spent here together, it should be this: Winners and Losers. What’s the difference? 2. Richard turns with a pointer and enumerates his points, which are listed on the white board.

  • False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen
False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen by Nicholas Vick November, 2012 Director of Thesis: Amanda Klein Major Department: English Woody Allen is an auteur who is deeply concerned with the visual presentation of his cityscapes. However, each city that Allen films is presented in such a glamorous light that the depiction of the cities is falsely authentic. That is, Allen's cityscapes are actually unrealistic recreations based on his nostalgia or stilted view of the city's culture. Allen's treatment of each city is similar to each other in that he strives to create a cinematic postcard for the viewer. However, differing themes and characteristics emerge to define Allen's optimistic visual approach. Allen's hometown of Manhattan is a place where artists, intellectuals, and writers can thrive. Paris denotes a sense of nostalgia and questions the power behind it. Allen's London is primarily concerned with class and the social imperative. Finally, Barcelona is a haven for physicality, bravado, and sex but also uncertainty for American travelers. Despite being in these picturesque and dynamic locations, happiness is rarely achieved for Allen's characters. So, regardless of Allen's dreamy and romanticized visual treatment of cityscapes and culture, Allen is a director who operates in a continuous state of contradiction because of the emotional unrest his characters suffer.
