The conception of the court as an ‘extra-legal’ tribunal (or as a legitimate court that had exceeded its jurisdictional mandate) emerges from the constitutional debate about the limits of executive authority that played out over in Parliament, in the press, in the pulpit, in the courts, and on the battlefields of seventeenth-century England. -

From Charlemagne to Hitler: The Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and its Symbolism Dagmar Paulus (University College London) [email protected] 2 The fabled Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire is a striking visual image of political power whose symbolism influenced political discourse in the German-speaking lands over centuries. Together with other artefacts such as the Holy Lance or the Imperial Orb and Sword, the crown was part of the so-called Imperial Regalia, a collection of sacred objects that connotated royal authority and which were used at the coronations of kings and emperors during the Middle Ages and beyond. But even after the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the crown remained a powerful political symbol. In Germany, it was seen as the very embodiment of the Reichsidee, the concept or notion of the German Empire, which shaped the political landscape of Germany right up to National Socialism. In this paper, I will first present the crown itself as well as the political and religious connotations it carries. I will then move on to demonstrate how its symbolism was appropriated during the Second German Empire from 1871 onwards, and later by the Nazis in the so-called Third Reich, in order to legitimise political authority. I The crown, as part of the Regalia, had a symbolic and representational function that can be difficult for us to imagine today. On the one hand, it stood of course for royal authority. During coronations, the Regalia marked and established the transfer of authority from one ruler to his successor, ensuring continuity amidst the change that took place. -

The king, the crown and the colonel : How did Thomas Blood try to steal the crown jewels in 1671? 2 Introduction After the execution of Charles I in 1649 many of the crown jewels were sold or destroyed. Oliver Cromwell ordered that the orb and sceptres should be broken as they stood for the 'detestable rule of kings'. All the gemstones were removed and sold and the precious metal was used to make coins. When the monarchy was restored in 1660, two new sceptres and an orb costing £12,185 were made for the coronation of Charles II in 1661. Can you spot any of these items in the picture at the top of this page? During the ceremony, the new king held the Sceptre with the Cross in his right hand and the Sceptre with the Dove in his left. The sceptre was a rod or staff which represents royal power and the dove refers to the Holy Spirit. The king was crowned with St Edward's Crown. At some point the king also held the orb, a hollow golden sphere decorated with a band of jewels and a jewelled cross on top. The orb refers to the king’s role as protector of the church. Charles II allowed the crown jewels to be shown to members of the public for a viewing fee paid to a custodian (keeper) who looked after the jewels in the Martin Tower at the Tower of London. -

Levine, B.A. Misericordia University A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in History to the Office of Graduate and Extended Studies of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania December 14, 2019 ABSTRACT A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in History to the Office of Graduate and Extended Studies of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania Student’s Name: Matthew Levine Title: The Complexities of Whig and Tory Anti-Catholicism in Late Seventeenth-Century England Date of Graduation: December 14, 2019 Thesis Chair: Christopher Dudley, Ph.D. Thesis Member: Shannon Frystak, Ph.D. Abstract The purpose of my research is to analyze anti-Catholicism in late seventeenth-century England in order to comprehend how complex it was. I analyzed primary (published) sources such as dialogues, diaries, histories, letters, pamphlets, royal proclamations, and sermons to get my results. Based on this research, I argue that Whiggish anti-Catholicism remained mostly static over time, while the Toryish variant changed in four different ways; this reflected each party’s different approach to anti-Catholicism. The Whigs focused on Francophobia, the threat that Catholicism posed to Protestant liberties, and toleration of all Protestants, while the Tories focused on loyalty to Anglicanism and the threat that Catholics and Dissenters posed to Anglicanism. While the Whigs did not change with different contexts, the Tories did so four times. The significance is that, while the core principles might have remained fairly static, the presentation and impact of those ideas changed with different circumstances. -

The Captive’s Position has been years in the making, with remarkable results. It meaningfully engages a wide range of pertinent prior scholarly work by others, and its uncommonly lucid sentences are crafted with care and skill. It is a book that takes the reader deeply into the investigative ruminations and convictions of its author but also, as in all good teaching, proceeds in a man- ner designed with an audience in mind. Toulouse’s opening question, implying a Newtonian world of simple cause and effect, gives way to a more subtle and complex encounter with hard-to-pin-down motives which necessarily remain as elusive as sub-atomic eventuation. The result, however, is a provocative psycho-cultural interpreta- tion comprised of diverse particles–historical details, circumstantial associa- tions and hypothetical propositions–strategically and imaginatively combined to convey a plausible cause-and-effect finale. A more accurate title for this book would be “Whigs and Tories after the Exclusion Crisis.” Grant Tapsell does not deal with King Charles II as a historical figure nor does he pay much attention to “personal monarchy” as a concept. Instead, he provides a survey of political opinion in the early 1680s, relying heavily on the work of Tim Harris, Mark Knights, and Jonathan Scott. -

Westminster Abbey ASERVICE TO CELEBRATE THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CORONATION OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II Tuesday 4th June 2013 at 11.00 am FOREWORD On 2nd June 1953, the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II followed a pattern established over the centuries since William the Conqueror was crowned in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. Our intention in this Service of Thanksgiving is to evoke and reflect the shape of the Coronation service itself. The Queen’s entrance was marked by the Choirs’ singing Psalm 122—I was glad—set to music for the Coronation of EdwardVII by Sir Hubert Parry. The Queen’s Scholars of Westminster School exercised their historic right to exclaim Vivat Regina Elizabetha! (‘Long live Queen Elizabeth!’); so it will be today. The coronation service begins with the Recognition. The content of this part of the service is, of course, not today what it was in 1953, but the intention is similar: to recognise with thanksgiving the dutiful service offered over the past sixty years by our gracious and noble Queen, and to continue to pray God saveThe Queen. The Anointing is an act of consecration, a setting apart for royal and priestly service, through the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Ampulla from which the oil was poured rests today on the HighAltar as a reminder of that central act. St Edward’s Crown also rests today on the High Altar as a powerful symbol of the moment of Coronation. In today’s Service, a flask of Oil is carried by representatives of the people of the United Kingdom to the Sacrarium, received by theArchbishop and placed by the Dean on the High Altar. -

Dr Eilish Gregory Catholic Forfeitures during the English Revolution: Parliament and the Role of Sequestration Agents In early November 1656, the Catholic William Blundell wrote to his nephew Thomas Selby updating him about the latest news in his home county of Lancashire and on matters of his estate. Blundell had previously told Selby about his dealings with agent Gilbert Crouch who was managing his sequestration and compounding affairs which were taking place in London. He remarked that Crouch had promised him ‘that he wil [sic] look carefully to my Exchequer busines’ and Blundell hoped that Selby would inform himself how best he could befriend Crouch, as he was apprehensive about the current dangers that was occurring at that time. Gilbert Crouch had purchased the sequestered estates of William Blundell; he held Blundell’s estates’ of Little Crosby and Ditton in trust until the Restoration. During the civil wars, Blundell had actively supported King Charles I and the Royalist cause, answering the call to serve the king in the Commission of Array in 1642, becoming a captain in the local dragoons before his capture and imprisonment. Consequently, his estates in Little Crosby in Lancashire were sequestered for delinquency and he spent much of the war petitioning to compound for his estates. Unlike the thousands that were sequestered for delinquency during the conflict, Blundell was well-versed in the art of sequestration and compounding for his estates. As a Catholic, he had frequently compounded for his estates for recusancy, and regularly paid his fines during Charles I’s Personal Rule in the 1630s. -

D. N. DeLuna Shaftesbury, Locke, and Their Revolutionary Letter? [Corrigendum] D. N. DELUNA (UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON) Abstract: A correction of an article originally published in vol 17 (2017). In 1675, the anonymous Letter to a Person of Quality was condemned in the House of Lords and ordered to be burned by the public hangman. A propagandistic work that has long been attributed to Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, and less certainly to his secretary John Locke, it traduced hard-line Anglican legislation considered in Parliament that year— namely the Test Bill, proposing that office-holders and MPs swear off political militancy and indeed any efforts to reform the Church and State. Careful examination of the text of the Letter, and that of one of its sources in the Reasons against the Bill for the Test, also circulated in 1675, reveals the presence of highly seditious passages of covert historical allegory. Hitherto un-noted by modern scholars, this allegory compared King Charles II to the weak and intermittently mad Henry VI, while agitating for armed revolt against a government made prey to popish and French captors. The discovery compels modification, through chronological revision and also re-assessment of the probability of Locke’s authorship of the Letter, of Richard Ashcraft’s picture of Shaftesbury and Locke as first-time revolutionaries for the cause of religious tolerance in the early 1680s. -
