The Little Bulldog March, 2016 Newspaper staff: Sponsor: Carolyn World News Cohen Editors: Hanna L., Emily R., Astronaut Kelly Returns After A Nathan C. Assistant editors: Year In Space Elizabeth M. By Nathan Chen Reporters: Jessie G., Jack S., Alisha S., Bennett R., Late on Tuesday night, astronaut Scott Kelly and two other Russian Alicia W., Hayden astronauts, Mikhail Kornienko and Sergy Volkov landed in a Kazakhstan C., Ella R., Anneke L., desert on their spaceship. Scott was the first American astronaut to spend a Charlie B., year in space. He spent 340 consecutive days in space beating the previous Elizabeth M., Zoe record 215 days, made by Michael Lopaz-Alegria. Scott was the F., Dilan M., commander of the ship until he passed the job to Timothy Kopra. Samantha P., Emily R., Alex B., Khumo N., Ethan R., Edward S., Scott Kelly was one of the 13 astronauts and cosmonauts representing 7 Serena B., Nathan nations that went to space. Their goal was to learn how the “long duration” C., Mariam E., space flights affect the human body. They all launched their spaceships on Brianna Z., March 27th, 2015. Hanna L., Nela S., McKenzie S., Will G., Maeve Z, Clarke N., Maison One third of astronauts in NASA had problems with their eyesight. M., Dillon M., Scientists are trying to discover the reason. Luckily, Scott’s identical twin Amanda B., brother, Mark Kelly is a retired astronaut, and is ready to help with the Taylor R., Reese research. NASA’s plan is to compare the twins to see the differences. Funny N. enough, Scott came back to earth two inches taller, but then, overnight he shrunk back to his regular height. Scientists are still studying all the data that Kelly and his team brought back. 1 Botswana Wildlife Conservation by Khumo Newman Botswana is in Southern Africa. It is almost the size of Texas. Nearly 40% is protected for wildlife management. Two years ago the Botswana government decided to ban the hunting of wildlife in the country. It did so because many animals were being poached. People from other countries, including some Americans, would come to Botswana to kill animals such as elephants and rhinos and take their heads, horns and tusks. Those people are called trophy hunters. Others, particularly from China and Vietnam, pay large amounts of money for elephant tusks and rhino horns because they believe (wrongly) that these items have magical powers. 1kg (2.2 pounds) of rhino horn can pay $65,000. Animals seem to know they are safe in Botswana because they have stopped migrating to neighboring countries, such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia. Now almost 40% of all the elephants in Africa are found in Botswana and the number is increasing as African elephants are being slaughtered in other countries in large numbers for their tusks. At this rate Botswana may be the only country left where you will find African elephants and rhinos. Opinion: I hope other countries will follow Botswana's lead and protect their wildlife for future generations. A few weeks ago, six U.S Senators and a Congressman visited Botswana to see the work that Botswana was doing to stop poaching and wildlife trafficking. They were very impressed, and said America should help the Botswana army and game rangers with equipment and technical support. As America is a close friend of Botswana, I hope it will do so. The Emoji: A New Word in the Dictionary by Reese Narcisenfeld In 2015, the Oxford dictionary decided to add the word “emoji” to the dictionary. People who write the dictionary will add a word if many people understand what it means. This is definitely true for the emoji! The emoji was first introduced in Japan in the 1990s. Now emojis are used by major phone companies all over the world. There are so many people of all ages that use and love emojis. They are used when texting and emailing to show how you are feeling. Or, an emoji can be used instead of words. For example, If I am in the mood for pizza, I may text my friend a pizza emoji. Or, if I am feeling tired and want to go to sleep, I will text my friend a sleep emoji. 2 Emojis are a lot of fun. There are 74 new emojis that may come out in 2016! What is Zika By: McKenzie Suggs Sounds like a girl’s name, but it is actually a virus that is spreading to people from mosquitoes. Scientists in Africa are stepping up the fight against mosquitoes, in order to kill them. Zika virus is suspected to be the cause of thousands of babies being born with microcephaly. This means the babies have small heads and possible brain damage due to an undeveloped brain. Zika was first discovered in 1947 by accident in East Africa, by scientists who were working on another viral disease. The virus was named after the Zika Forest in Uganda, where it was first discovered. The virus is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also carry Yellow and Dengue Fever. Zika virus outbreaks have occurred in Africa, Southeast Asia and in the Pacific Islands. Did you know that mosquitoes have done more harm to the human race than any other animal? Every year, millions of people are infected with malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and other viruses. Mosquitoes kill 600,000 people a year, with the majority of these being children in Africa. Scientist Maureen Coetzee, is trying to understand mosquitoes in order to eliminate them. In her laboratory located at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa, they are breeding male mosquitoes, sterilizing them and then releasing them into the wild. This will prevent the offspring from hatching and let them die without reproducing. Controlling mosquitoes is a very hard task and a never ending battle. As of now, there is no cure or vaccine and thankfully deaths are rare. The common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. These may last for several days to a week. If you happen to be traveling to those countries affected, you should wear insect repellent, long sleeves and pants. For pregnant women, avoid those countries all together. 3 National News Buddy Bison By Dilan Mendiratta Buddy Bison is a wooly mammoth mascot that pushes kids to explore parks. The Republican party started with fifteen candidates and is now down to five. The Democratic side started with five candidates and is now down to two. The five candidates still running on the Republican side are Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and Ben Carson. The remaining Democrats are Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. March 1st was Super Tuesday, a big day where fourteen states were in primaries and caucuses. This was a day for candidates to get many delegates and voters. Donald Trump won on the Republican side with 43.4% in Alabama, Arkansas with 46.7%, Georgia at 38.8%, 48.4% in Massachusetts, in Tennessee 38.9% and in Vermont 32.7%,. Finally he received 34.7% in Virginia. Cruz won in Alaska with 36.4% and 34.4% in Oklahoma. Also Cruz luckily won his own state Texas with 43.8%. Rubio won in Minnesota with a lead of 36.5%. Now for the Democratic side. Clinton won in Alabama with 77.8%, 66.3% in Arkansas, and in Georgia 71.3%. In Massachusetts she received 50.1%, 66.1% in Tennessee, 52.2% in Texas and 64.3% in Virginia. Sanders, won Vermont, his own state, with 86.1%, in Oklahoma 51.9%, and in Minnesota 61.6%. Recently, there have been caucuses in Nevada for the Democratic Party and in South Carolina and Nevada for the Republicans. The Republicans already had a primary in South Carolina and the Democrats had one later on February 27th. Another event you may have heard of is called a debate. Debates are when one party gets together and individual candidates are asked questions by the hostess or host of the debate. Debates are also a 4 time to show America why you should vote for that person. When candidates talk about their beliefs, other candidates, voters, and news reporters often question them. Update: As of March 27th, there are only three Republican candidates left. Both Marco Rubio and Ben Carson dropped out. Black History By Clarke Norman Way back in the 1960’s, Martin Luther King Jr., a great leader in the Civil Rights Movement, had a dream. Martin thought African Americans were treated very poorly. He wanted to change how they were treated. He wanted everyone to be equal. His famous quote was “Don't hate, love." He explained that if you were mean and tried to hurt the police they would probably injure you, but with love they wouldn't hurt you at all.
