REES in general are not liable to thofe alterations in their T fubfiantial parts that we obferve in ImaLler . In fome indeed the frequently becomc by culture variegated with white or ycllow fpots, and in that itate are much admired by lovers of gardening. The Beech however is fubjelt to vary, not only in the colour, but alfo in thc figure of its leaves. Thc beautiful variety of this with blood-red leaves% is pretty well known, and is multiplied by engrafting on the common kind ; but being deficient in vigour, as all fuch varieties originate in weak- nefs, it does not always Iucceed. A fingular variety with deeply indented leaves has been dif- covered in Bohemia by Mr. Vignet t, not much unlike the laci- niated variety of Batuld ahus in figure. A lefs itliking but ufcful variety is defcribed by hfr. Kerner, under the namc of Jfmfzlbirche, Bcech, growing wild in
