USD WOMEN’S SOCCER NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES - 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1996 2004 SEASON IN REVIEW 20 TOREROS EARN SIXTH CONSECUTIVE POSTSEASON BERTH By Katie Allen, USD Media Relations

The University of San Diego women’s soccer team ended its 2004 season with a 3-0 loss to the UCLA Bruins in the second round of the NCAA College Cup Tournament. It marked the sixth consecutive season San Diego (12-8-2, 5-1-1 WCC) advanced to the NCAA playoffs, one of just 16 teams nationally to achieve such a feat. USD equaled a program-best fi nish in the highly competitive West Coast Conference, winning fi ve league games to place third behind co-WCC Champions Portland and Santa Clara.

Guiding the Toreros to a strong fi nish, in which USD won seven of its last ten regular season games (7-1-2), second- year head coach Ada Greenwood was named the 2004 WCC Coach of the Year and the San Diego Union Tribune’s 2004 Coach of the Year. Greenwood becomes the second coach in program history to garner WCC Coach of the Year accolades, with Tony da Luz (1992-96) receiving the award following a record-setting 1996 campaign.

For the third consecutive season, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee sent the Toreros to Los Angeles and Senior Marie-Claude Henry was a stand- UCLA’s Drake Stadium to compete for a spot in the Tournament’s Sweet 16. With a 1-0 overtime win over UNLV in out on the fi eld as well as the classroom. the fi rst round of the NCAA College Cup Tournament, USD reached the second round for the fi rst time since 1999 She earned All-WCC Honorable Mention and for the third time in school history. A 3-0 loss to the Bruins of UCLA two days later ended San Diego’s season. accolades, as well as being tabbed a Dis- trict VIII Academic All-American. “We played well for the fi rst twenty minutes of the game,” said Greenwood about the second round loss to UCLA. “When UCLA pushed their entire team forward, the pressure was overwhelming. In the second round, you can’t hold back hoping for a one or two goal loss - we had to go for it. Playing with four forwards was risky, but sitting back would do nothing for us. A corner kick or a restart outside the box would have given us a chance to change the game.”

San Diego’s stellar second-half fi nish to the ‘04 season brought USD recognition as one of the nation’s top collegiate programs. After defeating then No. 3 Washington 2-1, Mountain West Champions Utah 3-0, and then No. 8 Santa Clara 2-1, the Toreros cracked the NSCAA/Adidas Top-25 Poll on October 12th with a national ranking of No. 25. USD would continue in appear in the NSCAA poll throughout the remainder of the season, ending regular season play ranked 21st.

“We started off 4-6-1, but the team was playing well,” said Greenwood. “Obviously we weren’t getting the results we hoped for, so we just made a few adjustments and stuck with them. There wasn’t a turning point or major difference in the middle of the season, although our record would show otherwise, we just started scoring goals and eventually picked up the wins.”

In each of his two years as the head coach at USD, Greenwood has led San Diego into the NCAA’s. Also responsible for the Toreros success are second-year assistant coaches Lucas Curtolo and Theresa Wagner. Greenwood was also an assistant coach at USD under John Cossaboon for fi ve years, contributing to San Diego’s current string of seven consecutive winning seasons and a sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

“This was a good step for us as a team,” Greenwood said. “We fi nished 8-2-2 over our last twelve games, beating a couple top ten teams, including Santa Clara. We had a real desire to become one of the better teams in the nation.”

Freshman forward Amy Epsten (San Diego, CA/Our Lady of Peace HS) was named the 2004 WCC Freshman of the Year, fi nishing the season with a USD team-high 10 goals and 23 points. Epsten is the fi rst-ever San Diego player to receive this league honor. Epsten was also named to the All-WCC Second Team and the WCC’s All-Freshman Team, along with being voted to Soccer Buzz’s All-Far West Freshmen Team.

Senior defender Kaitlyn Pruett (Encinitas, CA/La Costa Canyon HS) was the only San Diego player to be named to the All-WCC First team. Soccer Buzz also recognized her talents after she earned Third TeamTeam All-American accolades. Pruett fi nished the season with three goals and two assists for eight points. A dynamic force in the backfi eld, Pruett and the Torero defense shutout seven different opponents in 2004. Kaitlyn Pruett distinguished her- self as one of the best defenders in the country. Also fi nishing the season with eight points as a defender, freshman Vanessa Vella (Encinitas, CA/La Costa Canyon HS) was named to the All-Freshman Team and was one of fi ve Toreros who received Honorable Mention recognition. She also earned national recognition as one of the best freshmen in the country after being voted to Soccer Buzz’s All-Far West Freshmen Team. Fellow freshman Karen Cook also made an impact in her fi rst year, earning All-WCC Honorable Mention. Cook fi nished the year with an impressive 0.93 goals against average, 87 saves, and seven shutouts.

Marie-Claude Henry (St. Hayacinthe, Canada/University of Nebraska) fi nished the season with two goals and ten assists for 14 points and was an All-WCC Honor- able Mention pick. For Henry, it was her third straight all-league honor. Henry was also tabbed an Academic All-American for the West Coast’s District VIII. Michelle Rowe (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop McNally) was a major contributor to the Torero offense with fi ve goals and two assists for 12 points. Rowe’s Honorable Mention All- WCC honor marks the fi rst all-league recognition in her USD career. Veronica Ambort (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley HS) fi nished the season with four goals and one assist for nine points. Ambort, an 2004 All-WCC Honorable Mention pick, scored her third game-winning goal against UNLV in overtime to send San Diego into the second round.

THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO

The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacifi c Ocean. The campus is named Alcalá Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fi fteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcalá de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcalá, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD’s style.

THE CAMPUS The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renais- sance style. Since 1984, USD has completed numerous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000, the , a 5,100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USD volleyball and basketball. In the fall of 2001, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus and a new Science and Technology Center recently opened for the 2003-04 academic year. A fi ve-story Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was fi nished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Ad- ministration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square-foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms, and laboratories.

ACADEMICS USD enrolls more than 7,200 students who have a choice of more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university’s aca- demic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law, and Nursing. Class size gen- erally averages between 15-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 14:1. Over 97 percent of USD’s full-time faculty hold doctorates.

In the annual ratings of the country’s colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USD moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university now consistently ranks among the top schools in the United States.

STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ’s, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Stu- dents participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USD community partaking in intramural sports.

ATHLETICS The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team just completed its 12th season in the Pioneer Football League. Women’s sports include: basket- ball, cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Men’s sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, rowing, soccer and tennis. Since 1990, USD teams have made 45 NCAA post-season appearances; garnered 50 All-American selections; had 37 Conference Coaches of the Year; won 15 conference championships; and 4 WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year. At the end of the 2004 women’s soccer season, Amy Epsten was honored as the WCC Freshman of the Year, the fi rst Torero to win such an award and Ada Greenwood was voted as the WCC Coach of the Year by his peers. Seven San Diego players received conference accolades, as Kaitlyn Pruett was named to the First Team and Epsten was placed on the Second Team. In addition, Veronica Ambort, Karen Cook, Marie-Claude Henry, Michelle Rowe and Vanessa Vella earned All-WCC Honorable Mention.
