LOCAL BIOLOGICAL RECORDS SEARCH RESULTS PROPOSED RE-DEVELOPMENT OF UNIT B13, TREFOREST INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, PONTYPRIDD EXTENDED PHASE 1 HABITAT SURVEY EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SEGRO Industrial Estates Limited (SEGRO) instructed Enviros Consulting Ltd (Enviros) to undertake an extended phase 1 habitat survey of a proposed re- development of an unused industrial unit, located within Treforest Industrial Estate, Pontypridd, South Wales. The survey was undertaken in July 2008. The purpose of this type of survey is to establish the baseline ecological conditions of the site identifying the type, quality and extent of habitats in the study area. In addition, the location of any rare or notable plant species are identified and described accordingly, with consideration given to the likelihood of the site supporting protected species. Finally, where appropriate, recommendations for further species-specific surveys are given. The results of this survey suggest the habitats within the proposed development site as a whole are of low ecological value, and represent habitats that are in decline nationally. From this survey, Enviros recommends the following: Bat Survey. The industrial unit has the potential to support bats; it is recommended that a further species specific survey be carried out to determine the presence or absence of bats within the unit. The site contains a number of mature trees and scrub. Any clearance or removal of trees, scrub and other suitable vegetation should be undertaken outside the bird breeding season (between March and August). If this is not possible, removal of suitable habitat should only be carried out after close inspection for nesting birds by a qualified ecologist. SEGRO 1 PROPOSED RE-DEVELOPMENT OF UNIT B13, TREFOREST INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, PONTYPRIDD EXTENDED PHASE 1 HABITAT SURVEY 1. INTRODUCTION AND SITE SETTING SEGRO instructed Enviros Consulting Ltd (Enviros) to undertake an extended phase 1 habitat survey of a proposed re-development of an industrial unit site, located within Treforest Industrial Estate, Pontypridd, South Wales. The survey site covers approximately 1 hectare (ha) and comprises predominantly buildings and hard standing, with an area of ephemeral vegetation, tall ruderal and scrub to the rear of the unit. A shallow pool is located to the rear of the unit, and a narrow strip of amenity grassland is present at the east of the unit, with standard trees and an introduced shrub border to the west. In the south west of the site is an area of stored bark chips and logs, during the phase one visit the storage area was almost at ground level with very little material remaining. A further, purpose built wood chip store is located within the centre of the south of the site; this smaller area was filled with wood chip and compost, to a height of less than 1m. The site is directly adjacent to a number of industrial units, within Treforest industrial estate, to the north, east and west. An area of broad-leaved woodland is directly adjacent to the south of the site with a small, shallow stream running west to east parallel with the southern site boundary, at approximately 5m from the site. A small road and railway line to the south run parallel to the site boundary at approximately 30m and 50m respectively. The main text of this report gives the English name of species, whilst the species list (Appendix 1) also gives the accompanying Latin names. Appendix 2 gives target notes and descriptions of notable features and incorporates species from the initial site walkover undertaken in January 2008. Photographs of notable features of the site are presented in Appendix 3. SEGRO 2 PROPOSED RE-DEVELOPMENT OF UNIT B13, TREFOREST INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, PONTYPRIDD EXTENDED PHASE 1 HABITAT SURVEY 2. METHODOLOGY The assessment has been carried out using a combination of desk based research, and field survey techniques. 2.1 Desk Study The purpose of the desk-top study was to collect baseline ecological information relating to the proposed development site and the surrounding area (i.e. a 1km radius around the site). The study involved collecting information on any statutory ecological designations using the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) website at www.ccw.gov.uk. 2.2 Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey 2.2.1 Aim The aim of the extended phase 1 habitat survey is to identify the type, quality and extent of habitats in the study area. The location of any rare or notable plant species are identified and described accordingly. Consideration is given to the likelihood of the area being used by protected species and recommendations for further species-specific surveys are given, where appropriate. 2.2.2 Field Survey Method The phase 1 habitat survey was carried out in July 2008 by T Lord of Enviros using the standard methodology devised by the Joint Nature Conservancy Council1. The weather was warm and sunny. The standard outputs from the Phase 1 Habitat Survey include a habitat map with accompanying target notes when required. Target notes are used to provide added descriptions of the important habitats of the site, including information on species composition, habitat structure, evidence of management, and need for further specialised surveys. During the site visit, notes were made on features of potential value to other groups such as birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates paying particular attention to protected species. Habitats within the immediate vicinity of the site have also been noted. This report will serve to indicate the present and potential ecological value of the site based upon the survey information gathered. As with any survey of this kind, it cannot be seen as a definitive description of the site and its associated habitats and species at the time of survey. 1 Joint Nature Conservancy Council (JNCC) 1993. SEGRO 3 PROPOSED RE-DEVELOPMENT OF UNIT B13, TREFOREST INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, PONTYPRIDD EXTENDED PHASE 1 HABITAT SURVEY 3. DESK BASED STUDY RESULTS 3.1 Statutory Designations A desk based search identified no statutory designated sites (e.g. SSSIs, SACs or SPAs) within 1km of the site boundary. 3.2 Non-Statutory Designations The desk based search identified no non-statutory designated sites within 1km of the site boundary, although an area of Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW) was identified, approximately 250m to the south east of the site. 3.3 Protected Species Records Protected species records for the site were requested within the desk based study. No protected species records were found within the site boundary. The closest set of records held by the local records centre was located within the woodland to the south of Unit B13. The species identified included King Fisher, Kestrel, Buzzard, House Sparrow and Song Thrush. Development on site would not adversely affect these species as no direct disturbance would be caused. A full list of protected species records can be found within Appendix 4. SEGRO 4 PROPOSED RE-DEVELOPMENT OF UNIT B13, TREFOREST INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, PONTYPRIDD EXTENDED PHASE 1 HABITAT SURVEY 4. FIELD SURVEY RESULTS 4.1 Habitat Description The site comprises a number of broad-habitat types with bare ground being dominant and ephemeral, tall ruderal, and scrub, being represented. Each of the habitats recorded on the site are summarised in Table 1, with the phase 1 habitat map shown in Figure 1. This phase 1 habitat map incorporates associated target notes. Table 1 Phase 1 Habitat within the Site Boundary Phase 1 habitat Dominant species, comments and status. and code Bare Ground (J4) The majority of the site comprises hard-standing which has no real ecological value. Amenity Grassland A small area of amenity grassland is present in the east of the site (J1.2) adjacent to the building on site. The grassland comprises common species including; Yorkshire fog, white clover, creeping buttercup, daisy, ribwort plantain, ragwort and creeping thistle. The grassland is closely mown and maintained and has a low ecological value. Ephemeral (J1.3) Within the yard to the south of the unit is an area where ephemeral vegetation has begun colonising, species include smooth sow thistle, buddleia, great willowherb, pineappleweed, ragwort, cleavers, groundsel, ground elder, herb Robert, stinging nettle, colt’s foot and oxeye daisy.
