These resources are allocated between growth, reproduction, and maintenance, and how these resources are allocated will affect the overall fitness of an organism. A fundamental assumption of this theory is that once a resource is utilized by a trait, it cannot be used by another trait. Thus, when the demand for resources for one trait increases, it will come at the cost of the other traits. The host’s immune system is responsible for survival from pathogenic invasions. Therefore, it is a critical part of maintenance. Studies have examined the trade-offs induced by an immune response. The current knowledge on trade-offs incurred during an immune response come from the use of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), non-pathogenic antigens such as sheep red blood cells (SRBCs), or keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH). These studies have observed trade-offs with metabolism and weight. Additionally, some of these studies have observed decreased activity, increased fatigue, loss of appetite, and fever. -

Kaminski Leduc, Senior Legislative Attorney You asked if Connecticut law requires health insurance policies to cover specialized formula used for treating eosinophilic disorder. You also asked for a description of New York’s “Hannah’s Law.” SUMMARY Connecticut insurance law does not explicitly require health insurance policies to cover specialized formulas for treating eosinophilic disorder. However, the law requires specified health insurance policies to cover medically necessary specialized formula for children up to age 12 for treating a disease or condition when the formula is administered under a physician’s direction. Thus, it appears that this would include coverage of specialized formulas for treating eosinophilic disorder. Anyone denied such coverage may appeal to their insurance carrier (internal appeal) or the Insurance Department (external appeal). The explanation of benefits from the carrier describes the appeal process. Anyone with concerns or questions about his or her insurance coverage may contact the Insurance Department’s Consumer Affairs Division at (800) 203-3447 or (860) 297-3900. Sternberg National Institutes of Health National Institute of Mental Health Section on Neuroendocrine Immunology and Behavior Bethesda, MD 20892, USA Abstract Enhanced susceptibility to inflammatory and autoimmune disease can be related to impairments in HPA axis activity and associated hypocortisolism, or to glucocorticoid resistance resulting from impairments in local factors affecting glucocorticoid availability and function, including the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). The enhanced inflammation and hypercortisolism that typically characterize stress-related illnesses, such as depression, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease or osteoporosis, may also be related to increased glucocorticoid resistance. This review focuses on impaired GR function as a molecular mechanism of glucocorticoid resistance. Both genetic and environmental factors can contribute to impaired GR function. The evidence that glucocorticoid resistance can be environmentally induced has important implications for management of stress-related inflammatory illnesses and underscores the importance of prevention -

Disease Reporting in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions Title 50 Section 1-202 of the Montana Code Annotated (MCA) outlines the general powers and duties of the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services (DPHHS). The three primary duties that serve as the foundation for disease reporting in Montana state that DPHHS shall: • Study conditions affecting the citizens of the state by making use of birth, death, and sickness records; • Make investigations, disseminate information, and make recommendations for control of diseases and improvement of public health to persons, groups, or the public; and • Adopt and enforce rules regarding the reporting and control of communicable diseases. In order to meet these obligations, DPHHS works closely with local health jurisdictions to collect and analyze disease reports. Although anyone may report a case of communicable disease, such reports are submitted primarily by health care providers and laboratories. The Administrative Rules of Montana (ARM), Title 37, Chapter 114, Communicable Disease Control, outline the rules for communicable disease control, including disease reporting. Communicable disease surveillance is defined as the ongoing collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of disease data. Accurate and timely disease reporting is the foundation of an effective surveillance program, which is key to applying effective public health interventions to mitigate the impact of disease. What diseases are reportable? A list of reportable diseases is maintained in ARM 37.114.203. The list continues to evolve and is consistent with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) list of Nationally Notifiable Diseases maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to the named conditions on the list, any occurrence of a case/cases of communicable disease in the 20th edition of the Control of Communicable Diseases Manual with a frequency in excess of normal expectancy or any unusual incident of unexplained illness or death in a human or animal should be reported. -

What is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)? MCS (also known as TILT (Toxic-Induced Loss of Tolerance), Sick Building Syndrome, Chemical Allergy, and Environmental Illness) involves severe, chronic reactions to everyday products and by-products (fragrances, detergents, fabric softeners, air fresheners, new carpeting, newsprint, machine lubricants, auto exhaust, smoke, and 100’s more) that most people seemingly tolerate. Hundreds of MCS studies (and an increasing number of asthma studies) conclude that many patients become ill after long-term, low-level exposure to common environmental chemicals. For example, many people are now allergic to latex, a petrochemical that was formerly well-tolerated. MCS symptoms may include, among others, shortness of breath, sinus infections, headaches, mood swings, allergies, food allergies, mental confusion, memory loss, dermatitis, exhaustion, depression, swollen glands, earaches, toothaches, burning eyes, sinus infection, and stiffening of the jaw, neck, and shoulders. In many ways, sufferers feel like they have the flu. However, unlike flu symptoms, MCS reactions reoccur (and worsen) every time one is exposed to the triggering agents (even for just a few minutes), and the after-effects can be significant and long lasting (feeling much like a hangover). Because of its widespread use, one of the worst chemical offenders is fabric softener, either in liquid form or dryer sheets. These fragrance-filled petro-chemical products contain adhesives to make them stick to your clothes; however, they also stick to, and are readily absorbed by, your skin—the largest organ in your body. Patients with MCS typically react so profoundly to fabric softeners that some doctors have begun to challenge their patients with them during diagnostic examinations. -

This article is published with open access Abstract Reduced gut-microbial diversity (“gut dysbiosis”) has been associated with an anhedonic/amotivational syndrome (“sickness behavior”) that manifests across severe mental disorders and represent the key clinical feature of chronic fatigue. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we investigated differences in proxy biomarkers of gut dysbiosis in patients with severe mental illness and chronic fatigue vs. controls and the association of these biomarkers with sickness behavior across diagnostic categories. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched from inception to April 2020 for all the studies investigating proxy biomarkers of gut dysbiosis in patients with severe mental illness and chronic fatigue.
