1. For the third year in a row, and fourth time in NEC history, the postseason tournament will employ a format with the first two rounds contested at a predetermined school site and the finals held at the home of the higher seed. This format was first utilized in 1998, when the quarterfinals and semifinals were held at Central Connecticut State and the championship took place at Long Island. Wagner will host the NEC tournament for the third straight year under the current format, and the fourth time in the last six years. The NEC Tournament first came to Wagner in 1999, when the entire event took place two weeks after the opening of the Spiro Sports Center. By the end of this year’s semifinals, Wagner will have hosted 19 of the last 20 league tourney games dating back to 2002. 2. To illustrate the parity in the league in 2003-04, both Monmouth and St. Francis (NY) finished with six losses apiece, the most ever by an NEC regular season champion. 3. Furthermore, the four games that separate the #1 seed from the #8 seed in this year’s tournament is the smallest ever margin in league history. 4. NEC regular season co-champs Monmouth and St. Francis (NY) recorded a .667 winning percentage in 2003-04, the lowest ever for a league champion. 5. Despite two championships and seven title game appearances, Monmouth has earned its first-ever NEC regular season title and #1 tournament seed. 6. No player on Mount St. Mary’s current roster has appeared in an NEC Tournament game. The last tourney appearance for the Mount came in 2000. 7. Monmouth is a combined 7-1 against the top six seeds in the tournament, but just 2-2 against the #7 and #8 seeds, and 3-3 vs. teams that did not qualify for the postseason. 8. St. Francis (NY) and CCSU will meet in the NEC Tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons. St. Francis (NY) ousted CCSU in the quarterfinals a year ago (67-62), but CCSU knocked off St. Francis (NY) in the semifinals of the 2000 (73-63) and 2002 (58-54) tournaments, en-route to the league titles both seasons. 9. Although both schools are charter members of the NEC, Robert Morris and St. Francis (PA) will meet for just the fourth time in tourney play. The Colonials hold a 3-0 edge in the series, including a 72-52 triumph in the last matchup between the two western Pennsylvania rivals in the 2000 quarterfinals. 10. Fairleigh Dickinson has beaten quarterfinal opponent Wagner four straight times over the last two seasons. 11. In a strange statistical oddity, the top three seeds in the NEC Tournament - #1 Monmouth (-3.8), #2 St. Francis (NY) (-2.1) and #3 Fairleigh Dickinson (-4.2) - rank tenth, ninth and 11th, respectively, in the NEC in rebounding margin. 12. Central Connecticut State has recorded the second best winning percentage in NEC Tournament history. The Blue Devils are 8-3 (.727) in five tourney appearances. 13. Monmouth’s rally from a 20-point second half deficit to win the 2001 NEC title marked the biggest championship game comeback in league history. 14. A charter member of the NEC, St. Francis (NY) has reached the NEC Tournament semifinals in each of the last five seasons, the longest active streak in the conference. The Terriers reached the title game twice in that span, falling to Monmouth, 67-64, in 2001, and to Wagner, 78-61, in 2003. 15. St. Francis (NY)’s five straight NEC semifinal appearances are a rarity in league annals. FDU reached the semis nine straight times from 1983-91, while Rider turned the trick five consecutive years from 1993-97. 16. Since the league scrapped a divisional format in 1984, #1 seeds are a perfect 20-0 in their opening game of the NEC Tournament. 17. Despite the legacy of first round success #1 seeds have enjoyed in the NEC Tournament, Mount St. Mary’s may have a puncher’s chance at stopping top seeded Monmouth. Just five days prior to their quarterfinal matchup, the Mountaineers stopped the Hawks, 68-62, in a must-win game to earn a berth in the tournament. 18. While only four #7 seeds have ousted a #2 seed in the NEC Tournament, three of these upsets have come in the last four years. Last season, Fairleigh Dickinson defeated Monmouth (63-61), while Quinnipiac topped Wagner (87-78) in 2002 and Mount St. Mary’s knocked out Fairleigh Dickinson (73-68) in 2000. The Marist also beat Monmouth (75-60) in 1992. 19. Only three NEC Tournaments - in 1987, 1991 and 1994 - have gone exactly according to seeding. 20. St. Francis (NY) has played the most games in NEC Tournament history (28) without winning a championship. 21. Wagner’s Jermaine Hall (2003), Monmouth’s Rahsaan Johnson (2001), CCSU’s Rick Mickens (2000), Long Island’s Charles Jones (1997), Rider’s Darrick Suber (1993), Robert Morris’ Myron Walker (1992), St. Francis (PA)’s Mike Iuzzolino (1991), Robert Morris’s Vaughn Luton (1989) and Long Island’s Carey Scurry (1984) all were named NEC regular season and tournament Most Valuable Player. Incidentally, three of these players (Jones, Iuzzolino and Scurry) were named to the NEC’s five-man 20th Anniversary team in November, 2000. 22. The only teams to win back-to-back NEC titles are Robert Morris, which did it twice (1982, 1983 and 1989, 1990), along with Marist (1986, 1987) and Rider (1993, 1994). 23. In what will forever be known as “The Shot,” Rider’s Darrick Suber earned a place in NEC annals and ESPN Championship Week history in 1993. The Broncs and Seahawks battled tooth-and-nail for 39-plus minutes as Suber and Wagner’s Bobby Hopson waged their own individual dual. With the Broncs trailing by a point in the game’s waning seconds, Suber went coast-to-coast and hit an off-balance leaner just inside the free-throw line as time expired. The victory sent the Broncs Zoo into a frenzy and for a short time, brought the NEC into the forefront of the college basketball world. 24. The longest win streak in NEC Tournament history is eight, shared by Robert Morris (1982-84) and Rider (1993-95). 25. NEC Championship games have historically been tightly contested affairs, including five that have been decided by exactly one point. Ten have been decided by five points or less and 15 by ten or fewer points. 26. Fairleigh Dickinson has qualified for 22 of the league’s 23 postseason tournaments since the inception of the league in 1982. The Knights missed out on the festivities in 2002. 27. The only three coaches involved in this year’s tournament who have NEC championships under their belts are Howie Dickenman of CCSU, Dave Calloway of Monmouth and Tom Green of Fairleigh Dickinson. Dickenman’s Blue Devils won the title in 2000 and 2002, while Green’s Knights were victorious in 1985, 1988 and 1998. Calloway took the Hawks all the way in 2001. 28. CCSU head coach Howie Dickenman has posted an 8-3 (.727) record in NEC postseason play, the highest winning percentage among active league coaches and fourth all-time. 29. Coaches in this year’s tournament that are looking for their first NEC postseason victory are first year invitees Mike Deane of Wagner and Milan Brown of Mount St. Mary’s, along with Robert Morris’ Mark Schmidt (0-1) and St. Francis (PA)’s Bobby Jones (0-2). 30. St. Francis (PA) has not won an NEC Tournament game since 1995. The Red Flash have posted an 0-5 record since that time. 31. Mount St. Mary’s (1999) is the lone NEC school to win the conference title without having both a winning overall and conference record prior to entering the tournament. 32. Monmouth’s Alex Blackwell (1990) and Rider’s Charles Smith (1994) are the only two players to win both NEC Rookie of the Year and NEC Tournament MVP in the same season. 33. Robert Morris has a losing record against just two teams in NEC Tournament play: St. Francis (NY) (1-2) and Central Connecticut State (0-1). 34. Fairleigh Dickinson’s Tom Green and Marist’s Dave Magarity are the only head coaches in league history to capture the NEC Tournament in their first season with their clubs. Wagner’s Mike Deane and Mount St. Mary’s Milan Brown will attempt to become the third name on that list. 35. The largest margin of victory an NEC Tournament game is 35 points. That came on March 1, 1996 when Mount St. Mary’s defeated Long Island, 93-58. 36. Robert Morris has won the most NEC Tournament titles with five, but none since 1992. Fairleigh Dickinson has won 21 NEC tournament games, one ahead of Robert Morris for the most in conference history. NEC Seed-ology NEC Men’s Basketball Tournament Preview
