visitwhitby.com | 4 Explore Whitby Town and Harbour The harbour and the town combine to create one of those memorable locations. The harbour, facing due north, is the place where the River Esk joins the North Sea. It divides the town East and West, the East side historically was the ‘poor’ side with fishermen’s cottages, jet workers and the like. The West side had the grander homes of ship owners and sea captains. The harbour piers with their lighthouses of differing sizes, rather echo the rich and poor sides of the town!

The church stairs (originally wooden) are now known as the 199 steps and lead up to the fascinating parish church of St Mary and the magnificent ruins of Whitby Abbey. Beware, the donkey path below the steps still features on your sat nav - don’t try it! Whitby Museum
Whitby Museum is in beautiful Pannett Park, right in the heart of Whitby. It was founded in 1823 and offers a fascinating glimpse of Whitby’s heritage. The Museum has a diverse and intriguing range of displays that tell the story of Whitby and the surrounding area, from the huge fossil Ichthyosaurus to tiny jet carvings. There are many other objects, which reflect Whitby’s vibrant and scientific maritime history, including the exploits of Captain James Cook. The Museum has retained its original Edwardian atmosphere and its eclectic and fascinating collection of artefacts and curios are a delight for all ages. During your visit pop into the vintage tea room for homemade tasty treats.

CAPTAIN COOK MUSEUM WHITBY Captain Cook & Whitby James Cook came to Whitby at the age of 18. Captain John Walker, master mariner and ship owner, took him on as apprentice. Cook served 9 years on Get to know Captain Cook Walker’s collier barks, latterly as master’s mate. Walker was about to make him and Joseph Banks! captain of one of his ships but Cook had Special Exhibition 2020 other ideas.
That did however not end the connection. Cook remained friends with his old master for the rest of his life, writing to him and visiting in 1771 after the First Voyage.
Walker lodged Cook in the house he and his brother owned in Grape Lane, now the Captain Cook Museum. The attic where he slept is used for special exhibitions. This year’s is about Joseph Banks, the botanist ‘The celebrated Mr. Banks: reputation and legacy’ and tells how Banks built a career from his adventures on Endeavour.

Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum For a great educational day out for all the family (and only a 30 mile car ride from Whitby), take a trip through the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park, and head along the A169, which will bring you to one of the UK’s most interesting tourism attractions: Eden Camp. Start here
Start and Finish - Marina car park. From the Coates Marine end of ww the car park follow the river-side path upstream through to Ruswarp. Admire the old Railway Viaduct halfway along! At the end of the path, turn right onto the High Street and take a right turn after Jackson’s Butchers and on to the Monks’ Trod. Follow the Trod to a signposted junction at a metal kissing gate. There are now two alternatives:
1) Go straight on which is the last section of the Esk Valley Walk. Follow the ‘leaping salmon’ signs back to Whitby, via school playing Great entertainment fields, cross the A171 road down the indicated footpath and cross the railway line to the car park. for the whole family

Ravenscar, a former Roman signal station, is an odd spot, the site of a village planned but never built. Sandsend
A good beach walk from Whitby takes you to a village that is both coastal and rural! Beaches and waves make it a perfect playground. Behind this obvious attraction are two becks with charming cottages and interesting buildings – the old cement works for one.

Locals call it ‘Steers!’
The high cliff of Cowbar protects this tiny fishing village. Fishing cobles still moor in the beck, their mooring ropes and tie posts make for fine subjects. The famous Staithes group of artists worked from here in the 1890s. Staithes holds an arts festival in September each year, which attracts artists and many visitors. The festival showcases the arts of this pretty fishing village. Many of the villagers open their cottage doors to the public as temporary galleries over the weekend.

The moorland that once almost marooned Whitby (it used to be easier to access Whitby by sea), holds many clues to its industrial past. Valleys, which were once hives of industry, now present rolling vistas of heather cut through with green valleys.
Most of the villages around Whitby have been established in the Esk Valley with its source high up on Westerdale Moor.
Goathland: not ‘Goatland’ – once Heartbeat’s ‘Aidensfield’ – wanders in wide open form from the railway station up to the church and is probably the only village that does not rely upon the River Esk for its existence. An ideal base for exploring the moors and the remains of a Roman road.
Rosedale: as well as a nice little ‘pottering’ village with Abbey remains. Rosedale affords one of the North York Moors’ most fascinating walks around Rosedale Valley, where remains of the area’s industrial history abound.

The village of Westerdale now seems remote but historically was a ‘main route’ between religious establishments. It was also a major centre for the Knights Templar.
Castleton has a mixed history of Danish settlement and later a mining industry which gives way to its more recent agricultural image. It was even a cheese selling centre, exporting locally produced cheeses far and wide – Queen Victoria even partook of it!
Close by is Danby, its name a more obvious link to its Viking past. A rather grand hunting lodge which now hosts the Moors Centre (see page 36), whilst Danby Castle was ‘host’ to Katherine Parr, the Queen who outlived Henry VIII.
Glaisdale, with its long beautiful valley (Dale in these parts) links High Moors to the River Esk. Rail, road and river meet below it, where legendary Beggar’s Bridge crosses the Esk.
Egton and Egton Bridge: one village or two? Egton Bridge is home to the world’s oldest Gooseberry Show, which holds the world record for the heaviest Goosegog. At the 2019 show the heaviest gooseberry (grown by a local man) weighed in at 64.56g!
Catholic Priest, Father Postgate was born here. He was executed in York for defying the state by preaching in the area of Egton for many years whilst being hidden by the Catholic community.
Grosmont’s early history and original name ‘Grandismont’ originates from a 13th century priory set up with help from Joanna Fossard following the religious order of Grandmont. Grosmont’s later history which is now largely hidden, is of heavy industry with blast furnaces brickworks and a population of approx. 9,000. Today it is the hub of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (see p39-40) and is a must visit location for steam buffs. The Murk Esk and the River Esk meet just above the village.
Lealholm was home to a hutted encampment of navvies building the railway. Today it is a far cry from the lawless past and is now a delightful place to stay a while by the River Esk. The best link to the Esk and quoits is to be found here at Lealholm, with the pitch set out on the green by the river. The game was once popular throughout rural England, but now the Esk Valley is one of the few remaining venues.

Beckhole
31 | visitwhitby.com “A Meander Down the Esk” Watercolorist John Freeman takes a meandering journey down the River Esk, portraying the beautiful river in all its moods. The book will appeal to people who love the North York Moors National Park, the Esk Valley and Whitby.
Lealholm
Beckhole is a tiny hamlet below Goathland and like so many villages here was the site of ironstone mining; a few traces now remain of the spoil heaps and blast furnaces. There are some lovely walks and a popular pub amongst its main attractions.
Sleights and Briggswath: these two villages merge as they straddle the Esk. The main road from Pickering used to turn right as it crossed the bridge but a new road now eases the congestion on the old winding route alongside the Esk to Ruswarp.
Ruswarp (‘Rusup’), the upper tidal reach of the River Esk and the destination of a nice walk from Whitby. Boating is one of the activities which can be enjoyed here as well as taking in the amazing scenery on the Ruswarp Round walk (see p23).

The superbly scenic Esk Valley Railway takes you from urban Middlesbrough through picturesque villages, such as Lealholm, to the famous and historic fishing port of Whitby. Throughout the 35 mile journey, just relax and enjoy the constantly changing rural landscape. It is a unique and affordable way of discovering the North York Moors National Park, without having to resort to the car. The line connects at Grosmont with the heritage steam service to Pickering.
Hikers and walkers can also explore the surrounding countryside before catching the train home. One of the best walks is the Esk Valley Walk between Castleton and Whitby, a 37 mile route which follows the River Esk from its source at Esklets, Castleton, until it ends at Whitby where it flows into the sea.

Whitby is rightly renowned for its rich Warren Moor heritage and unspoilt setting. The station Chimney is situated right in the centre of the town by the harbour. The North York Moors National Park is an enchanting place at any time of year but in late summer one of England’s largest expanses of heather moorland flushes purple, creating a truly magnificent sight. This beautiful place is a haven for all sorts of wildlife, particularly ground-nesting birds such as curlew, lapwing, golden plover and merlin.

Hop on board the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and enjoy a day filled with vintage charm and amazing scenery.
