Student Handbook STUDENT HANDBOOK © 2012 WELCOME TO RUSANGU UNIVERSITY (RU) This Handbook is intended to provide you with the basic information, which you need to have as a student. It defines your role, rights, privileges, and parameters. It is, therefore, to your advantage to study it and acquaint yourself with its contents right from the beginning before you get too busy with your class assignments. Moreover, it forms the pivot upon which all other activities on this campus revolve. However, regulations stated herein are under continuous review by the University administration, changes and amendments take effect upon being announced on campus. The Rusangu University is owned and funded by the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church. As a church, we believe that true education is one, which affects the total person by developing his/her spiritual, academic, physical and social faculties. He crossed over in the company of several African Adventist Workers namely; Jacob Detcha, Philip Malomo, Jack Mahlatini Mpofu and Andrew Nyakana and established Rusangu Mission in 1905. It initially opened in 1975 at Rusangu Ministerial School. It was the sole institution in the country that provided Ministerial training to most of the Pastors serving the Zambian Adventist territory. It later had its name changed to Zambia Adventist Seminary to broaden the scope for the theological training that was being offered. In December 1993, a decision was made to re-locate it to Musofu in Chief Chitina’s area in Mkushi. However, in 1994, the institution was closed so as to have adequate time to plan for its re-organization and upgrading. In 1997, the institution’s name was changed to Zambia Adventist College due to its extended intended mission of incorporating other academic and professional; disciplines in addition to theology. It is a reference document, which students and staff alike must consult in order to be properly informed on a particular programme. Ideally, therefore, a bulletin should contain up-to-date information on the curriculum and the enabling regulations. This means that a bulletin should be revised regularly to take care of recent advances in knowledge in the various disciplines and periodic changes in regulations. In this regard, I am pleased to note that the leadership of the School of Graduate Studies, Professional Growth and Research Development has come up with an academic structure guiding our Postgraduate Studies Programmes. The production of this current edition of the Graduate Studies Bulletin, is evident enough to show that the School has endeavored to successfully execute its mandate in furtherance of its goals.     AAA Accreditation Status for Colleges and Universities The following list identifies by Division and Country all post-secondary institutions recognized and accredited by the Accrediting Association of Seventh-day Adventist Schools, Colleges, and Universities (AAA) along with the year each institution was first accredited and when current accreditation expires. Expiration is always on December 31 of the year identified, and during that same year an accreditation visit will be scheduled. The following definitions apply: ▪ Accredited: An institution with full accreditation. ▪ Mid-Level Training Institutions: Institutions that offer education which goes beyond secondary level education but is less than a bachelor’s degree. These include diploma teacher training, technical training in building and construction or other professional trades, and non-collegiate hospital-based schools of nursing (c.f. FE 30 15). ▪ In Candidacy: An institution in the process of application for full accreditation. Programs are still recommended for transfer to other accredited institutions. The maximum candidacy term is two years. ▪ In Pre-candidacy: An institution that has met basic criteria for operation and is working towards candidacy status. Programs are not yet recognized for transfer to other accredited institutions. The maximum pre-candidacy term is 5 years. ▪ On Probation: An institution that has held full accreditation but is not presently meeting accreditation expectations in certain critical areas. (University of South Africa) currently serves as a district pastor in Bulawayo, West Zimbabwe Conference. As a trained educator and ordained pastor, Thebe has served the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a teacher, pastor, and lecturer and administrator at Solusi University, Zimbabwe. He has published several articles and one book, A Formative Assessment Model for Self-Regulated Learning (LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing, 2019). He is married to Rhoda with four children and five grandchildren. Solusi University is a chartered institution of higher learning owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Zimbabwe. Developments that Led to the Establishment of the School Solusi University is situated 30 miles (50 km.) southwest of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe, near the original headquarters of Chief Soluswe, from whom the university took its name. It was originally known as the Matabele Mission, but it was later renamed Solusi Mission.1 The history of Solusi University goes back to the late nineteenth century. Prior to the coming of the pioneer missionaries in 1894, there was no trace of Adventist work in Matabeleland or the entire geographical area of then Southern Rhodesia, which included Mashonaland and the surrounding regions. Hence, Solusi may rightly be called “the mother and almoner of them all”2 (referring to missions to Africa), being the first Adventist foreign mission to be established among the native peoples of Africa.3 Its history is dotted with various achievements, amidst its many setbacks and unforeseen circumstances.
