Unfortunately, most developing countries, like Malawi, have in the past years not given or attached enough consideration to the provision of safe water, good sanitation facilities, and promotion of good hygienic practices. However, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology realizes that an investment of these services through the school system could go a long way in ensuring a healthy and productive nation. The need to have a national assessment on the water, sanitation, and hygiene in primary schools was expressed at different fora since 2002. The assessment was guided by issues raised in the National Water Policy (NWP, 2007) and the National Sanitation Policy (NSP, 2008). The analysis report represents a contribution to the realization of the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS, 2006) and the National Education Sector Plan (NESP, 2008). It was felt that a lack of information on the status of water, sanitation, and hygiene in primary schools was hampering the ministry's efforts in ensuring the provision of these facilities in schools. On average we would require only around 10 US Dollars per school child to ensure provision of water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities in adequate quantities and quality and implement hygiene education in all schools. This target is achievable considering that there are many duty bearers. In order to address the gaps identified by the survey, it is important that there is strong collaboration and partnership among the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology; Ministry of Irrigation and Water Development; Ministry of Health and Population Services; and Ministry of Gender, Child Welfare, and Community Services. In addition, it is expected that the private sector would play its role by investing in the area of water, sanitation, and hygiene in the education sector. The main report presents the status of School WASH at present; what the Ministry wants to achieve in the future; and the resources required to reach this vision. As the Ministry incorporates the indicators measured here into the Education Management Information System, we expect that this information will be reviewed and sharpened in successive years. These annexes represent a summary of the status of the districts with detailed data of water, sanitation and hygiene by school in each zone.     Malawi Country Oice Summary Report 2017 UNFPA in Malawi aims to promote universal access to sexual and reproductive health, realize reproductive rights, and reduce maternal mortality to accelerate progress on the agenda of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, to improve the lives of women, adolescents and youth, enabled by population dynamics, human rights and gender equality. Malawi Country Office Summary Report 2017 UNFPA supports programmes in thematic areas of: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights including Family Planning, Maternal Health, HIV and AIDS, and Fistula Population and Development Humanitarian Emergencies Gender Equality and GBV including Ending Child Marriages These are delivered by working with the Ministry of Health and Population; Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development; Ministry of Labour, Youth and Manpower Development; Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare among other government institutions and non-state actors. Persistent inappropriate feeding practices are some of the major causes of stunting in young children. This study was conducted to determine risk factors associated with stunting among infants and young children aged 6-23 months in Dedza district in Central Malawi. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 12 villages in Mayani Extension Planning Area (EPA), targeting households with children aged 6- 23 months. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the primary caregivers on household socioeconomic characteristics, household food availability, dietary diversity, responsive feeding practices among mothers and caregivers, age of introduction of complementary foods, frequency of feeding, types of foods and dietary diversity of children. Anthropometric data (weight and recumbent length) for children were measured using standard procedures. The Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis was performed to study the independent associations of various determinants on prevalence of stunting with prevalence of stunting as a dependent variable.

Precolonial Magololo hunters, having supplanted Mang’anja hunting as a result of the superiority of their hunting technology by 1861, found themselves in competition with white sport hunters over game animals. Unequal power relations between the Magololo hunters and the white hunters, who formed part of the colonial administration in Nyasaland from the 1890s, saw the introduction of game laws that led to wild animals and their sanctuaries becoming contested terrains. Colonial officials and some whites enjoyed privileges in hunting game whose declining populations were blamed on Africans in general and the Magololo in particular. Some Africans and certain whites devised hunting strategies that brought them into conflict with the colonial state.

    Malawi Monthly SitRep #1 Reporting Period: January 2014 Highlights The number of food insecure population in Malawi, as of January 2014, is estimated at 1,894,782 having increased from 1,461,940 initially projected in June 2013. The new estimate includes an additional 39,599 people that have been identified following a monitoring exercise conducted in December 2013 to verify reports of deterioration of the situation in Dedza district. A total 2,481 hectares of crops are reported to have been destroyed by the army worms in 12 districts. Of these 547 hectares were totally wiped out. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is distributing seeds and fertilisers to the farm families that were affected to enable them to replant. A total of 7, 344 households (36,720 people) have been affected by floods and storms since the onset of the rainy season in November 2013. Of these, 1,525 households (7,625 people) in Mangochi district were affected by floods that occurred on 10th January 2014. Situation Overview & Humanitarian Needs Food security The number of food insecure population in Malawi as of January 2014 is estimated at 1,894,782 people having increased from 1,461,940 initially projected in June 2013. In the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) November 2013 update the number increased by 27% to 1,855,183 but 39,599 people have since been added following deterioration of the situation in Dedza district, in central Malawi. In December 2013, The MVAC undertook a monitoring exercise in Dedza and Kasungu districts following reports of serious deterioration of the food security situation.

    Malawi Country Operational Plan 2017 Strategic Direction Summary April 26, 2017 1 1.0 Goal Statement While there has been significant progress in the fight against HIV, Malawi still has 980,000 people living with HIV (PLHIV), including 350,000 undiagnosed. The Malawi Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment (MPHIA) showed significant progress toward the globally endorsed targets of 90-90-90. The number of new adult infections each year continues to decline (28,000/year in 2016), coinciding with an increase in ART coverage. With the number of annual HIV-related deaths reduced to 27,000/year in 2016, Malawi continues making progress toward epidemic control. However, MPHIA also highlights a disproportionately high HIV incidence among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) with point estimates for HIV incidence 8 times higher among females aged 15-24 than males. Therefore, the overarching goal of COP17 is to interrupt HIV transmission by reducing incidence among AGYW through testing and treatment of potential sexual partners (men 15-40) and primary prevention (e.g., expansion of DREAMS and AGYW targeted interventions), thereby interrupting the lifecycle of HIV transmission and accelerating progress to epidemic control. Increasing focus in five “acceleration” districts: Per the MPHIA, the epidemic is most intense in population-dense regions of Southern Malawi, especially Blantyre; therefore, PEPFAR will focus on Blantyre and four other high burden, scale up districts (deemed “acceleration” districts) that include 70% of the national gap to saturation.
