A four-barrel carburetor, high-rise intake FMRCOA Members manifold and a custom free-flow exhaust system with twin getting their well pipes were among the many modifications made to the stock deserved Mustang. Anniversey Badges Named for the number of steps between the production and racing shops at Shelby American in Venice, Calif., where the car was first produced, the GT350 was only available in white with car-length blue stripes in its first year of production. The GT350 racer won the coveted Sports Car Club of America’s B Production series national championship in its first three seasons of competition. It was also entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1967. Car and Driver noted the competition-worthy specs of the GT350’s street version, saying it was the first time an automaker had released a brand new racecar for the street. Two swap meets in Michigan to report on; one big, and Saturday by 11:00 am the place was packed, and walking the one small. First, the swap meet in Saginaw put on by the aisles was difficult. Fortunately we got there early, and had the Script A chapter of the Model A Restorers club. The swap luxury of being able to move at our leisure. Although there meet was very close to all the spaces sold, and there was a plenty of parts, and they sold out of vender space, the early good turnout of spectators. However, the early Ford parts of Ford parts were few and far between….but unlike Saginaw, any pre-war vintage were almost non-existent. There were there were some pre-war parts available. I have attended this lots of parts, but most seemed to be G.M. and were from the meet continually since 1963, and as always did come home 60’s and up. That seems to be the way at most swap meets with a few parts and a lighter wallet. The last time we went it took over an hour to the first weekend in February for over 50 years, and continues go one-quarter mile to the exit. They know about the problem, to draw a very large turnout of spectators and vendors from but nothing has ever been done. So, that meet although good, not only the surrounding area, but the surrounding states. On is off my list…..I don’t need the frustration. I will stick to just the February meet.

This month another postcard from the collection of FMRC member Bob Griffith. This month we have a view of the Ford Highland Park Plant. The back of the card tells us the plant has an area of 278 acres. It comprises a power plant, wire plant, wool and cotton textile mills, drop forge, and vast machine shops. The Henry Ford Trade School is also located here. Although hard to see, much of the area across Woodward Ave. is still vacant, an area that would later house the Montgomery Wards Store, and many other businesses. My father use to pass the plant on his way home from college and he would often stop to look at the working power plant in the front windows. He said the place was spotless, and I would suppose that is the way Henry Ford expected it !!

All of that came about as Gurney, who became the first driver to win at least one race in Formula One, NASCAR, Indy Car and Sports Cars, was hop-scotching around the globe competing in various forms of racing. He gained his first Formula One victory in the Grand Prix of France in 1962 and the following year began a streak of four straight wins in the yearly NASCAR road course race at Riverside, driving for Holman-Moody (1963) and the Wood Brothers (1964-66). In 1967, he captured his first Indy-Car event at the Riverside, Calif., road course before winning his fifth and final NASCAR event at the same place in 1968. “Dan was one of the best road racers I’ve ever seen,” said Leonard Wood, a NASCAR Hall of Famer who worked with Gurney during those winning years. “If I was sitting up in the stands by the esses at Riverside and you put 10 different drivers in the car, I could tell you which one was Dan. He would always take the right approach to the turn, and I can’t say enough about how good he was. We had so much fun with him. If you got the car equal to anybody else, you were just home free. “Everybody told him he looked like he was on a Sunday evening drive Motorsports has been littered with men and women who out there,” continued Wood. “But he said, ‘You don’t know how hard it is possessed the talent to drive any kind of vehicle, but there to make it look like that. Brian ’s Tip Hot Under Your Hoodie let the upper, lower, bypass and heater hoses go way too long, and if they don’t blow at a very inopportune and embarrassing time, the rotting inside the hoses will eventually clog the cooling system. Imagine rotting hoses, and rusting blocks and core plugs, then add to this problem by allowing your vehicle to sit all winter while that debris turns into concrete inside your engine. As gravity takes it’s toll, a lot of this debris will settle down into the bottom of the coolant passages in the block. Oh, and speaking of radiator hoses, if applicable to your vehicle, make sure that bottom hose has the spring it’s supposed to have in it, and remember that is another source of metal eventually corroding away.

Moving right along, and trying to keep our vehicles moving, here are other considerations. Blocks that have been over bored do not pull heat away as well as a stock block. Most engines have a correct method of installing head gaskets, and if they are put on backasswards, correct coolant flow will be stopped. We all sort of, I’ve talked about reasons for engines overheating before, but have maybe, kind of care about fuel economy, but an engine had a couple of folks ask that I talk about it more in depth so, here running too lean can overheat. More compression will goes. Starting with the obvious, consider that the cooling system is cause more overheating. Restricted exhaust flow can just not big enough. Next could be a thermostat that is stuck closed or cause overheating. More initial timing usually provides partially closed, and you should always run a thermostat. Next could better performance, but that too can cause overheating. be to make sure the heat gauge is working correctly, and that the heat If you changed the rear end gearing to provide better gauge sensor is submerged into the coolant. Eventually a water pump acceleration, the engine fires more frequently and that can fail, and also consider that a steel or cast impeller can rust away, or can cause overheating. Maybe you changed the torque get smaller from corrosion, or be the wrong one for your application. converter to provide quicker acceleration, but remember Make sure the pulleys are correct, as they could be turning too slow that a looser converter allows the engine to rotate more, to circulate the coolant properly. A fan shroud is very important, and as the rear end gearing will, and that too can cause the fan blades should be about halfway into the shroud. Remember, if overheating. you put the blades too far into the shroud they could severely damage your radiator, because they will pull in toward the radiator as the engine Your cooling system is the only way your engine can revs up. There are different styles of fans available, with various blade dissipate the extremely high temperatures built up inside configurations and blade counts, and flex fans that never seem to work your block and heads. The coolant mixed with water, as advertised. Also note that blades have been known to come off fans, hopefully distilled water, carries the heat to the radiator, especially flex fans, so always stand clear and away from those rotating then the radiator heat is transferred to the fins and blown blades, and think about preserving your hood. A clutch fan is a great away into the air. Because road grime and debris can idea, as a constantly turning fan gets in the way of air flow when the accumulate in those fins, the radiator should be gently vehicles gets up over about 35 MPH, but you do have to make sure the blown out at regular intervals, the fins straightened out, clutch fan is working properly in order to rely on it. The modern day and the coolant and distilled water changed with fresh electric fans are good and reliable, and if you do decide to install an rust inhibitor and water pump lubricant. I personally electric fan, I strongly suggest the thermostatically controlled option. believe in using a product like Red Line, as it breaks If you opt for the manual on/off fan, sooner or later you will forget to down the molecular structure of the coolant to allowing turn it on and overheat, or forget to turn it off and came back to a dead for better cooling. Specialty vehicles that sit around battery. way too long need to have their cooling systems cared for more often than your daily driver’s, because acids Whew, is it hot or is it just me? Now let’s move on to the engine and corrosion will occur more frequently when not in and powertrain. Some uncaring rebuilders will knock the Welsh plugs use and plug up your cooling system. That’s about it for (sometimes called Core or Freeze plugs) into the block, then there is a now so, be yourself, and always Be Cool. coolant restriction that is very difficult to trace. Also, too many owners
