We have two big events coming up fast and could use some extra bodies! The first is RSPCA Week , which runs from 19-22 June . We are collecng at some big Tesco supermarkets on 20, 21 and 22 June and we need collectors. We will be at Honiton, Kingsteignton, Exmouth and Exeter Exe Vale . Also, Shelter Day will soon be upon us—Sunday 31 August (inial poster on the back with a finalised poster to come). We will need helpers on the day—on the gate, running stalls, helping us in the run up to the event pung up marquees. If you can help with either of these events, please contact Maria on 01392 690282 or email [email protected]. 3 Bunnies Galore! Lile Valley is currently bunnytasc—or rather we’re a lile overrun with rabbits! This pring has been parcularly bad for our rabbity friends, as more and more have been abandoned or have been allowed to breed out of control. The result is more bunnies at Lile Valley, but we only have so much pace for them and we are now deperate to find rabbit-friendly homes for our current resident. We encourage propecve rabbit owners to consider large outdoor accommodaon such as ‘wendy house’/sheds with access to a garden and/or a grassed run. If using a tradional hutch set up we have a minimum requirement of 6 x 2 x 2.6 (180cm x 60cm x 75cm) for a hutch with a permanently aached run of at least 18 sq . You can buy excellent hutches from www.boylepethousing.co.uk – all handmade to order. We only rehome rabbits in pairs (or singly to live with an exisng rabbit). Some rabbits may be suitable to live indoors as house rabbit. Adult rabbits are neutered prior to adopon. Neutering vouchers will be issued for rabbit kien. Adopon fee: £15—reduced to £25 if adopng 2 rabbits. This is a bargain compared to what pet shops charge when you consider the care we’ve given our rabbits prior to you adopng them—and we’re always here to offer advice. Dolly Ilka Waffle Gerald & Geronimo Tom & Jerry Jive Bunny, Tango, Bolero Snufkin Ruth Barnabas Jolene 4 Rabbit Awareness Week 10-18 May 2014 Rabbit Awareness Week aims to raise the profile of rabbits as pets and encourage owners to seek the right veterinary advice on rabbit nutrion and healthcare. Did you know that rabbits are the UK’s most neglected pet? RAW aims to change this. We are always happy to give advice to rabbit owners or prospecve rabbit owners. We have been promong RAW so Maria and Anna took to Pets at Home in Exeter and Exmouth in bunny costumes to raise money! One of our Animal Care Assistant, Adam Harris, is taking part in a Guinness World Record Skydive on 21 June for Lile Valley, where 260 people will tandem sky dive in just 24 hours! Please sponsor Adam if you can. Here is his Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/adam-harris91 . Appeal For Millie Poor lile Millie, the Shih-Tzu, was taken to our vets by an RSPCA Animal Welfare Officer with a broken leg. The operaon to correct her leg was urgent and has cost us £450. Sadly, we are seeing more and more cases like this—animals coming in needing operaons or expensive veterinary treatment before they can be put up for rehoming. We are o en le to pick up the bill and as soon as we have one sorted, there is another one that comes along. Those that know the work we do here at Lile Valley will be aware that we will do everything we can for every animal in our care. Millie is a gorgeous girl and is bearing up well considering the big operaon she's just had. She is currently in a foster home recovering but, as soon as she is beer, she will be looking for her furever home. Do you think you can help towards the cost of geng Millie back on her feet? You can donate direct to the Shelter, marking your donaon “Millie’s Appeal” or use this online Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/milliesappeal . Thank you. 5 Happy Endings! We have three wishlists — one for dogs, one for cats and the other for small animals. They list lots of items that our animals really like, such as treats and toys. You will need an Amazon account to do this but it’s really easy to set up and it’s free. Go to www.amazon.co.uk . Log into your Amazon ac- count and type into the search box “RSPCA Lile Valley Wishlist” and our wishlists will come up! It’s a great way to help us out and all the animals in our care will be very grateful! And don’t forget to claim for your purchases using Easyfundraising , as we can raise even more money that way! The presentation of all monitoring features into these catchment maps will assist in developing an integrated approach to catchment management and operation. The water quality monitoring maps and index were originally incorporated into the Catchment Action Plans. They provide a visual presentation of monitored sites within a catchment and enable water quality data to be accessed easily by all departments and external organisations. The maps bring together information from different sections within Water Quality. The routine river monitoring and tidal water monitoring points, the licensed waste disposal sites and the monitored effluent discharges (pic, non-plc, fish farms, COPA Variation Order [non-plc and pic]) are plotted. The type of discharge is identified such as sewage effluent, dairy factory, etc. Additionally, river impact and control sites are indicated for significant effluent discharges. If the watercourse is not sampled then the location symbol is qualified by (*). Additional details give the type of monitoring undertaken at sites (ie chemical, biological and algological) and whether they are analysed for more specialised substances as required by: a. EC Dangerous Substances Directive b. EC Freshwater Fish Water Quality Directive c. DOE Harmonised Monitoring Scheme d. DOE Red List Reduction Programme c.

The Airport had identified a requirement to adopt the airspace around Exeter Airport to assist the ATC in providing enhanced levels of information to aircraft using the airport and in the local area. The aim was to create a “Known Environment”. This was a lengthy process that involved an application to the Civil Aviation authority (CAA) and could take 130 weeks.

  • Two Devon Families in Jamaica: a Local Association with Slavery by Gillian Allen
Two Devon families in Jamaica: a local association with slavery by Gillian Allen Maritime South West No 21 (2008); Revised 21/07/2017 My perspective on slavery I take the view, first propounded by Eric Williams in ‘Capitalism and Slavery’, that slavery was not a marginal enterprise but that it was central to the development of the British economy in the 18th century. It produced capital for the industrial revolution; it prompted the development of financial institutions and the improvement of shipping and the navy. It was central to the development of the prosperity we enjoy today. It was also a major step on the road to globalisation, bringing together disparate parts of the world in one economic enterprise, with the founding of multi-cultural societies. By the same token, the Transatlantic Trade in Africans left a legacy of tribal conflict in West Africa, and of poverty in Africa and the Caribbean, and of the racism which hampers the participation of black people in our prosperity even today. My view is that it is important for us to know about our own history and to address the issues that arise from it. The extent of our involvement in an iniquitous system has been denied, hushed up and erased from the history books. I believe that it is behoves us to uncover that hidden history, to understand and discuss it, and to come to terms with it. I think that a thorough examination of our history will enable us to admit to our latent racism and to begin to establish a more honest dialogue among the inheritors of the legacy of slavery – the black people on either side of the Atlantic, and the whites; the enslaved and the enslavers.

Please find attached objections and recommendations from East Devon Alliance with regard to the proposed boundary changes at East Devon District Council. Kind regards. Cllr Marianne Rixson Chair, East Devon Alliance Sidmouth-Sidford Ward Sent from my iPad Begin forwarded message: From: Marianne Rixson < Date: 30 March 2017 at 14:19:00 BST To: Marianne Rixson Subject: LBGCE final version 1 29th March 2017 Mark Cooper Review Officer LGBCE 14th Floor, Millbank Tower London SW1P 4QP Dear Mr Cooper We welcome the Boundary Commission’s agreement to the number of councillors being raised from 57 to 60. The three main objectives for this Electoral Review are: 1. Improve electoral equality by equalising the number of electors each council represents; 2. Reflect community identity and 3. Provide for effective and convenient local government. However, we believe that placing the main emphasis on the numbers does not serve the other objectives of community identity and effective local representation. Our objections to the new ward patterns recommended are as follows: 1. Clyst Valley • EDDC’s recommendation for Clyst Valley was to split the Parishes of Sowton and Clyst St Mary. This results in splitting the village High St in two, which bizarrely has Clyst St Mary on one side and Sowton on the other.
