ABSTRACT: The majority of natural colourants are of vegetable origin from plant sources –roots, berries, barks, leaves, wood and other organic sources such as fungi and lichens. In the medicinal and food products apart from active constituents there are several other ingredients present which are used for either ethical or technical reasons. Colouring agent is one of them, known as excipients. The discovery of man-made synthetic dye in the mid-19th century triggered a long decline in the large-scale market for natural dyes as practiced by the villagers and tribes. The continuous use of synthetic colours in textile and food industry has been found to be detrimental to human health, also leading to environmental degradation. Biocolours are extracted by the villagers and certain tribes from natural herbs, plants as leaves, fruits (rind or seeds), flowers (petals, stamens), bark or roots, minerals such as prussian blue, red ochre & ultramarine blue and are also of insect origin such as lac, cochineal and kermes. -

Antioxidant and antibacterial properties of endogenous phenolic compounds from commercial mustard products By Ronak Fahmi A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba In partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE Department of Human Nutritional Sciences University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Canada Copyright © 2016 by Ronak Fahmi Abstract This study investigated the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of endogenous phenolic compounds in Oriental (Brassica junceae) and yellow (Sinapis alba) mustard seeds. Phenolics in selected Canadian mustard products (seeds/ powder/ flour) were extracted using Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) and their corresponding sinapate profiles were established through HPLC-DAD analysis. The antioxidant capacity of each extract was assessed by DPPH assay and correlated with the total phenolic content (TPC) measured using the Folin–Ciocalteau method. Sinapine was the major phenolic compound in all the samples analysed, with negligible amounts of sinapic acid. The sinapine content, expressed as sinapic acid equivalents (SAE), ranged from 5.36 × 103 ± 0.66 to 14.44 ± 0.43 × 103 µg SAE/g dry weight of the samples, with the highest in the yellow mustard seed extract and lowest in Oriental mustard powder. The level decreased in the following order: yellow mustard seed > Oriental mustard seed > yellow mustard bran > Oriental mustard bran > yellow mustard powder > Oriental mustard powder. Extracts from yellow mustard seeds had the highest TPC (17.61× 103 ± 1.01 µg SAE/g), while Oriental mustard powder showed the lowest TPC with 4.14 × 103 ± 0.92 µg SAE/g. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of mustard methanolic extracts ranged between 36% and 69%, with the following order for both varieties: ground mustard seed > mustard bran > mustard powder. -

It is composed of one or more resins, and a minute quantity of volatile oil. Canada pitch of commerce is in reddish-brown, brittle masses, of a faint odor, and slight taste. Oil of hemlock is obtained by distilling the branches with water. It is a volatile liquid, having a terebinthinate odor and taste. All contributed equally to this manuscript. Plant essential oils (EO) are used as perfumes, lotions and air fresheners because of their pleasant aromas, but EO also have the ability to elicit changes in mood and behavior. These activities are influenced by the mode of administration and by multiple signaling pathways. The EO aromas from organically grown apple mint (Mentha suaveolens) and passionflower fruit (Passiflora incarnata) were assessed for their effects on cognition and coordination. Participants completed two tasks designed to test working memory and bimanual task efficiency in rooms infused with apple mint, passionflower fruit or control EO. Bimanual coordination was assessed using the Intercept2 program and the Memory Span component of CogLab 2.0 was utilized as a test of working memory. Then, the EO were analyzed by GC-MS, resulting in the identification of several compounds with affinity towards olfactory receptors and neurotransmitter systems. For specific memory subtests within CogLab, EO from apple mint aided number recall, whereas passionflower fruit hindered recall of numbers and letters that sound similar. Passionflower fruit EO slightly enhanced bimanual task coordination. The results indicate that specific aromas may differentially affect task performance. The leaf samples of the hollyhock were taken from the roadside areas affected by heavy metal pollution due to intensive motorized traffic and from areas 30 m from the roadside by taking into account prevailing wind direction in 10 different locations. There were only significant differences for Mn, Cu, and Zn contents of leaves according to the sampling locations. The mean Fe (383.3 mg kg-1), Mn (50.2 mg kg-1), Cu (19.2 mg kg-1), Zn (23.9 mg kg-1), Cd (17.9 mg kg-1), Cr (5.1 mg kg-1), Ni (3.2 mg kg-1), and Pb (3.2 mg kg-1) contents of leaves sampled from roadside areas were significantly higher than mean heavy metal contents of leaves sampled from the areas 30 m from the roadside. The increasing ratios in mean heavy metal contents of leaves were ordered as Cd (309.3%) > Cr (248.9%) > Ni (130.6%) > Fe (75.9%) > Pb (64.3%) > Mn (40.6%) > Cu (26.1%) > Zn (22.7%). -
