QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER October 2018

Blue Ridge Central VA Hampton Roads

Joe Auricchio THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE President Hello all VSHE Members!

As summer rolls into fall, VSHE is moving on. Several events are coming up quickly. There are district meetings and socials planned over the next couple of weeks and through the holidays. We also have our fall conference on Oct. 24 in Fredericksburg. This year we are featuring safety and innovation. See the calendar on our website for upcoming events.

Big news!!! VSHE has reached 300 members. See membership section of newsletter for details.

VSHE is welcoming an old friend back to our leadership team. Jim Setliff, of CHKD and former VSHE President, is joining the Board of Directors again. We look forward to Jim’s input and guidance as the Hampton Roads District Chair. As a group, we would like to thank Ron Blackburn for all he has done to keep Hampton Roads moving in the right direction.

As one person rejoins, another is leaving. Secretary Geoff Pierce, Board Secretary, has announced he is leaving VSHE after the May 2019 conference. If you or someone you know wants to be involved at this level, please reach out to one of the Board members for details.

Becoming a better organization does not happen because one person does a lot. It happens because a lot of people do a little. If you have any ideas or want to get involved, reach out to a Board member to see how to get involved. We hope that you will use the Virginia Society of Healthcare Engineers as a forum for the exchange of innovative ideas, practical solutions to problems, and as a resource for current developments in the healthcare industry.

Respectfully,

~Joe Auricchio BS, CHFM VSHE President 2018-2019

Welcome VSHE Members to the Chapter Sustainability Section in the quarterly newsletter. Please reach out to me with ideas for future articles or speaking engagements!

Does Your Engineering Team Have the Energy-to-Care?

Energy-to-Care is a collaborative program championed by ASHE to assist healthcare facility engineers in monitoring and reducing energy consumption. Geing involved is easy and starts with just signing up to participate HERE. With the first step complete, the next task is as simple as entering a few utility bills into the software portfolio Manager. Portfolio Manager is a facility energy-benchmarking tool that can be utilized for free. This tool is provided through Energy Star and is so intuitive even a CEO could use it.

Once set up, portfolio manager allows users to access detailed energy data at no cost and provides for a platform to compare and challenge similar facilities using a robust data visualization tool. And, if you are an ASHE member, you can apply for awards.

This program gives healthcare facility professionals the opportunity to “give back” to their organization through energy savings, which ultimately frees up resources to beer support patient care.

Locally, healthcare facilities teams can engage in friendly competition for a chance to win a fabulous prize, bragging rights and the coveted VSHE Spark-Plug Award. Additional information about the VSHE Spark-Plug challenge will be forthcoming and posted on the website.

The Energy-to-Care ASHE Chapter Challenge program allows ASHE affiliated chapters to participate in a friendly competition against one another. The goal: reduce energy consumption!

VSHE supports Energy-to-Care, and we’re looking for a few good hospitals to join us.

We’ll even help sign you up. Let me know if you want to know more! 540) 731-2492, [email protected].

Lynne Manning LOOSE ENDS! Communications Chair

Interested in being on the Board of Directors for VSHE?

We have an opening for Chapter Secretary coming up in May 2019. Our long-serving Secretary, Geoff Pierce, will be rotating off the Board. We are looking for a dedicated member (HealthCare or Affiliate) to fill his big shoes. To learn more about the position, duties, and nomination process, please contact Joe Auricchio, President: [email protected] or call: (804) 338-1716. National Health Care Facilities & Engineering Week

Take the time to recognize your staff for all they do to optimize the health care physical environment during National Health Care Facilities & Engineering Week, October 21-27, 2018.

You and your staff are important members of your health care team – your department keeps your facility operational, safe, and efficient. Because of all you do, there is power; running water; and a clean, comfortable, and safe healing environment for all who walk through your doors. What you may think is ordinary is truly extraordinary. Without you and your staff’s efforts, the doors of your facility would not be open.
