DURAN DURAN MISS THE CUT ON NEW B-SIDE ALBUM Submitted by: Liquid Public Relations Wednesday, 16 July 2014 Today we reveal the 21 tracks which our panel of experts, including Laura Mvula, Horace Panter from The Specials and Phil Etheridge from The Twang, have chosen for a unique virtual album of the best music to come from the West Midlands over the last six decades. There are, as you can see, a few surprise omissions, but some favourites in there too... *******STRICTLY EMBARGOED******* *******UNTIL 4PM, WEDNESDAY JULY 16th******* ULTIMATE WEST MIDLANDS ALBUM FEATURES BLACK SABBATH AND ELO; DURAN DURAN AND LED ZEPPELIN FAIL TO MAKE THE CUT #BsideBrum A diverse range of artists from Black Sabbath to Broadcast and from The Streets to Steel Pulse feature on a new 21-track virtual album showcasing the very best music from the West Midlands. Duran Duran, Led Zeppelin and The Move are three notable absentees from the playlist, which spans six decades and myriad genres including heavy metal, reggae, electronica, jazz, R&B, ska and pop. The album is the creation of B-side, a nationwide campaign by Visit Birmingham, the city’s official leisure tourism programme, to celebrate the musical creativity of the city region. It is available to hear at visitbirmingham.com/bside A long list of tracks was drawn up through public nominations, celebrity ‘selfies’ and suggestions on Twitter, which was then discussed and distilled into the final ‘album’ by a panel of industry experts, all of whom have a connection with the region. Laura Mvula, Horace Panter of The Specials and Pete Paphides were amongst the panel of singers, musicians and industry experts who met at Town Hall Birmingham on July 9th, to create the virtual album.

UB40 CAREER LANDMARKS 1978 A gang of eight boyhood friends form a band, UB40, in the Moseley area of Birmingham, initially playing covers of songs by their favourite reggae stars. 1979 The group make their live debut in February and spend the rest of the year writing songs and honing their live act through gigs in local pubs and clubs. 1980 The band are invited by Chrissie Hynde, of The Pretenders, to support her group on tour. UB40 release their debut single, King/Food For Thought on Graduate,a local independent. It goes on to make No. 4 in the chart. UB40's debut album, Signing Off, reaches No. 2. 1981 The band leave Graduate and set up their own label, Dep International. Their second album, Present Arms, replicates the success of their first, reaching No. 2 in the chart. One In Ten becomes their fourth Top Ten single in a year while Present Arms In Dub is the first dub album to enter the UK Top 40. 1982 Further hits follow in the shape of I Won't Close My Eyes, Love Is All Is Alright and So Here I Am. 1983 Labour Of Love, a homage to the reggae artists that inspired them, gives UB40 their first No. 1 album. It remains in the chart for 18 months. A single from the album, Red Red Wine, gives the band their first UK No.1 hit in August. Five years later, it tops the US chart. 1984 If It Happens Again gives the band their tenth Top 20 single 1985 UB40's cover of Sonny & Cher's I Got You Babe, a duet with Chrissie Hynde, gives the band their second British No.

  • Alternative Ideas: Post-Modern Music As a Critique of American Society
Alternative Ideas: Post-Modern Music as a critique of American society An Honors Thesis (IO 499) by Anthony Edmonds Ball state University Muncie, Indiana April 1990 Graduation: 5 May 1990 Popular music is a form of creative expression. It can be trite and meaningless or emotional and passionate, formulaic and unoriginal or refreshing and revolutionary. since the 1960s, rock music has been considered an art form,' and just as classical music, literature and theatre can evoke feelings and express opinions, popular music too can be a vehicle for personal statements and social criticism. Ever since the 1960s when groups like the Beatles and Rolling stones were saying something to their audience, much rock music, though not all, has had meaningful and insightful lyrics. 'Alternative' music is especially dependent on lyrical content as its backbone. certainly the music itself is very important as well, but at the same time this type of music is replete with social observations which are conveyed by the words. Also called post-modern, this kind of music is best defined in the context of its principal audience. What is now termed 'alternative' is an outgrowth of the punk/new wave movement of the late 1970s, a movement that was undeniably working-class in its roots. Punk surfaced in England as a challenge to the hegemonic ruling-class. The music represented the percipience of lower-class youths, challenged the capitalist control of music, and suggested new sounds, forms and meaning. 2 Punk was different in how it was made and what it portrayed, and groups such as the Clash and the Sex pistols sang angry songs about poverty, inequality, helplessness and alienation.

Many Rivers To Cross While the two previous Best of UB40 collections neatly divided the band's output between their more political early period and their later, covers-oriented pop success, they were also only ten tracks apiece. The Very Best of UB40 1980-2000 is the first comprehensive single-disc overview of the band's career, and it's a lot more generous at 18 tracks (on the American version). It isn't arranged chronologically, which actually helps the programming by splitting up the covers over the course of the running order. There's a bit more toughness to the earlier songs, both in the lyrics and the punchier performances. Yet in the end, the sonic differences 1 / 3 UB40 - The Very Best (2000) Written by bluelover Saturday, 12 February 2011 19:37 - Last Updated Tuesday, 29 August 2017 12:14 are subtle enough that casual fans should still be able to enjoy them (unless they only want to hear the band performing reggae-pop versions of oldies they already know).
