Heavy Metal Cover Songs –
TAKEN TO THE EXTREME: HEAVY METAL COVER SONGS – THE IMPACT OF GENRE Ike Brunner A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August, 2006 Committee: Melissa M. Spirek, Ph.D., Advisor Jeremy Wallach, Ph.D., Graduate Faculty Representative Laura Lengel, Ph.D. John Warren, Ph.D. © 2006 Enter your First and Last Name All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Melissa Spirek, Ph.D., Advisor Investigations of popular music forms that have been negatively portrayed in popular media, such as heavy metal and rap, have been largely limited to analyses of lyrics (e.g., Hansen & Hansen, 1991; St. Lawrence & Joyner, 1991; Ballard & Coates, 1995; Anderson, Carnagey, & Eubanks, 2003), even though evidence of the sound being more important than the words was demonstrated as far back as 1969 (Robinson & Hirsch). The present investigation was conducted in response to this void in the literature. To test the music, a two-part multimethodological study was employed, consisting of an experiment and surveys, to analyze how music genres are cognitively processed by listeners. The first study tested differences in people’s perceptions of different music genre labels and their impact on song lyrics. The second study tested differences in musical genres using pop original and heavy metal cover songs as stimuli. Data collection was gathered via questionnaires consisting of both open- and closed-ended items. When rigorously assessing people’s behaviors, perceptions, and self-reports identifying media consumption preferences, the investigation’s findings refute a direct effects approach to music listening and underscore the complexity of individual difference factors. -

[email protected] Blekingegatan 25, 11856 Stockholm Sweden 046-8-6426358 I was born in 1946 in middleclass surroundings outside Stockholm, Sweden. Piano lessons in my youth went without any real progress. Culturally Sweden was isolated with a state owned radio and later television with very limited output. It was like the eastern European states behind the iron curtain. At best, perhaps once a year a song with Louis Jordan or Big Joe Turner was heard on the radio. Around 1956 records with Elvis Presley came to Sweden. Through my four year older brother I became absolute fascinated and soon had two other favourites whose records I also started to buy: Little Richard and Fats Domino. -
METAL MUSIC in IRAN by Jeremy David Prindle a Thesis
THE DEVIL’S PRAYERS: METAL MUSIC IN IRAN by Jeremy David Prindle A thesis submitted to the faculty of The University of Utah in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Middle East Studies Department of Languages and Literature The University of Utah May 2014 Copyright © Jeremy David Prindle 2014 All Rights Reserved The University of Utah Graduate School STATEMENT OF THESIS APPROVAL The thesis of Jeremy David Prindle has been approved by the following supervisory committee members: Soheila Amirsoleimani , Chair 2/25/2014 Date Approved Chris Lippard , Member 2/25/2014 Date Approved Margaret Toscano , Member 2/25/2014 Date Approved and by Johanna Watzinger-Tharp , Chair/Dean of the Department/College/School of Middle East Center and by David B. Kieda, Dean of The Graduate School. ABSTRACT Metal music is a highly misunderstood style of music that is dismissed and demonized all over the world; even in the US and Europe where it originated it is still vilified and viewed as an unsophisticated style of music. In the Islamic Republic of Iran the same views are amplified to the extreme as a very foreign and Western style of music is growing in popularity. I explored the history of metal music to show where this genre originated so a better understanding of this music could be attained. Through an understanding of the genre it is much easier to understand how this music has spread across the globe like a wild fire and people in third world and oppressed nations are being inspired and motivated to become musicians and stand up for themselves and their beliefs.
